I'm DJ-ing - UPDATE: Sunday, 09/06 - Hi-Hat Garage (Milwaukee/East Side)

Yeah - I also can't believe I missed this before the actual event - I'm within walking distance! Make sure you give us the details for the next go-round, Brian! Sunday's aren't usually my favorite bar time, but since I can pretty much walk over in my pj's, I'll definitely come check it out!

A good dj runs a party, whether is be a house party, a club or where ever. Like Brian said, it's more than playing the songs off of a playlist, it's creating a perfect seamless, beat matched mix. Some dj's incorporate scratches, juggles and other "tricks" into the mix which is part of the skill set involved. Some dj's will even put a playlist together based on the melodic structures and keys of a song.

Congrats on the gig Brian! I've been DJ'ing (strictly as a hobby) for 14 years now. I still love house music but I've had a number of radio mix show guest appearances over the past two years that have pushed me towards a more mainstream audience. I did a few months of mixes for a Hip Hop station in New England last year. That started as just a standard "street mix" on Friday nights and it evolved into a full fledged house and club music weekend show that ended with a 2 hour New Years Eve mix. Then the station switched formats and I was out. But it was fun while it lasted.

Yeah, I don't do scratching or juggling, strictly beatmatching... although I did a TON of preparation for this first gig, so I think it sounded pretty decent. Of course, I was asked to do a 2nd set where I ended up having to wing it... I was about 2 songs away from running out of tracks. I had to dip into the Doobie Bros at the end.

I've got a standing invitation to come back every Sunday night, and Erika (the DJ who invited me out) said something about trying to get me a gig at Taylor's.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess this also answers the question as to why it was necessary to get drunk at wedding receptions in the 80's with bad DJs.

The wedding DJ is the only experience I have as well, and is also why I decided long ago weddings are for others. Chicken dance, macarena, Kool and the Gang's Celebration...it's like watching a repeat of a terrible sitcom over and over.

I used to DJ twice a month at the Riverhorse (Pierce and Center) from 10-2am. It was great. I got paid in free beer. I always stuck closely to vinyl only going to my iPod for requests. Sometimes that didn't pan out either. I do know of people that have set up playlists, and just played those while DJing. I gave them hell for it. Because of my teaching job, I only get to DJ during the summer, and right around Christmas. I'll be DJing there Tuesday the 28th actually.

I always spin a mix of power pop, pop punk, hardcore, and the like. Best time. Probably a ton of stuff you've never heard, if yer into that, come by 2 dollar PBR tall boys, and cheap rails.

One time my old band DJed at the high hat garage, we drank for free until they cut us off after the 5 of us burned through our $225 house tab, and then they payed us 100 bucks at the end of the night. It was insane, and probably the greatest time I ever had.

The resident DJ at Taylor's asked me to put together a sample mix of stuff to see if there'd be an opportunity for me there. It's deep house / downtempo / lounge music, so I'm not sure if anyone here's interested, but if I get the gig I'll post something. It would be a Thurs/Fri/Sat night rotation, so for those you who work dayjobs, it would be a lot easier for you to come out and heckle me.
