I'm DJ-ing - UPDATE: Sunday, 09/06 - Hi-Hat Garage (Milwaukee/East Side)

A friend of mine is letting me guest DJ an hour-long set at the Hi-Hat Garage Sunday night. It sounds like I'm on sometime starting between 9pm and 10pm. I know that it's a work/school night for most of us, but I figure that I'd throw it out there so if anyone wanted to come heckle me, they could. I'll be spinning a house/funk/disco set.

If you're interested:

- 1/2 price rails/taps/wine plus

- $1 beers

- $5 liters

Sounds like a cool gig for you. Those $1 beers would sure be enticing if I lived in Milwaukee.

Someone's gotta go and get some pics of DJ BTA. If not DJ BTA, what is your stage name?

Have fun!

I'll make sure I get some pix. I'm not going with "Brian the Automator" as a DJ name... It's too close to "Dan the Automator" (who I ripped it off from). That flies on a baseball forum, but for a real DJ name, not so much.

With that said, a raid of the muppet database led me to pick the name "X the Owl".

Red Alert Red Alert it's a catastrophe...

Nice tune to end with. My old roommate Dan X used to play the hell out of that one.

How was the set, and how was Richie Hawtin the other night?

Wow, your roommate was Dan X? I think he might have been spinning at the first party I was ever at.

The set was great... I actually ended up doing a second set as well. Thanks to brewerjamie15 and tomwopat for showing up as well. I actually punked out and didn't see Hawtin... didn't feel like driving to summerfest by myself.

your music is weird
Don't diss the boots cats boots cats boots cats. (say it over and over, you will get it)

And yeah Dan and I were roommates a while back for a couple years, amazing DJ/producer/...Cub fan. It's true, even before he moved to Chicago. We used to argue about Brewers/Cubs back when they were both terrible.

At least you didn't play any Jethro Tull.

How I missed this thread initially I do not know.

Next time I'll be there, BTA.

Ok, I'm going to totally admit my ignorance and show my ancient age here. DJs use to be guys that played vinyl records. People would walk up and request songs and they were necessary because of the physical act of changing records. Again, this is not meant as an insult, it's complete ignorance on my part, but I don't really understand why DJs are needed now, and I'm sure someone will be happy to explain it to me. Couldn't the bar tender just plug in an ipod or make a CD mix with a bunch of songs, rather than spend money on a DJ?

Yet given this, DJs seem to be more popular than ever. There is even a DJ shop near my house in Waukesha that I'm always tempted to go to because I can't even imagine what is in there. Obviously there is a ton more to being a DJ than I am even remotely aware of.

When you just play random songs off an iPod or CDs, you get songs that start and stop cold (with a pause at the beginning and at the end). A DJ will mix those songs so that the transitions between them are seamless (by starting one song before the other song ends). A good DJ will also read the crowd and figure out which songs are going to keep them dancing, and which ones are going to be buzzkills.
