Brewers Lose Series to Chukars

By Dan Douts / Helena Brewers

HELENA, MT-- Two runs in the bottom of the ninth was not enough to boost the Brewers past the Chukars as they fell 7-6 on Friday night. With two outs in the inning, the Chukars walked in two batters with the bases loaded. However with the tying run only 90 feet away, Richard Folmer was able to strike out Chris Ellington to end the game.

Scott Krieger went 2-4 with three RBI's including his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. Cutter Dykstra and Hitaniel Arias each had two hits in the game, but it was not enough to match the Idaho Falls offense.

Hilton Richardson went 3-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Chukars. Brewers 2008 first round draft pick Jake Odorizzi gave up two earned runs in five innings to record the loss. Pernell Halliman gave up four earned in 3.2 innings, but was on the field at the right time to record the victory

The loss drops Helena to 9-8 on the season, as they drop three of four in the series. The Brewers will host the Casper Ghosts Saturday night at Kindrick Field. They will send RHP Damon Krestalude (2-1, 4.80) against Casper RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (0-0, 0.00).

Errors costly in Brewers' loss to Chukars

By JASON SCOTT - Helena Independent Record

It was too little, too late for the Brewers Friday night.

Helena suffered four errors on its way to a 7-6 loss to the Idaho Falls Chukars before 1,018 fans at Kindrick Legion Field despite a walk-fueled rally in the bottom of the ninth.

Pioneer League South-leading Chukars built up a 7-4 lead before the last half-inning. The Brewers used four consecutive two-out walks to put the winning run on second base, but the effort fell flat, handing Helena (9-8) the loss.

"Yet another ball game we should've won," Brewers manager Rene Gonzales said. "That was a poor game. We had a lot of mental breakdowns."

The Brewers started the scoring in the first inning when Scott Krieger blasted a two-run home run to center. The homer was Krieger's seventh on the year, the league lead.

The Chukars (10-4) answered Helena's two-run first with four consecutive innings in which they scored. In all, Idaho Falls scored in six different innings, though only five runs were earned.

"We had errors, where the guy's going to be safe, and we throw it away. That's mental," Gonzales said. "There's no reason for it. It cost us the game."

The Brewers scored again in the seventh when Hitaniel Arias laced a two-run triple to the right field corner, tying the game.

However, Idaho Falls scored again in the eighth and ninth to regain the lead before the Brewers rallied with their backs to the wall.

Following two quick outs, the Idaho Falls bullpen nearly fell apart. Arias singled and was pushed all the way around the diamond thanks to four straight bases on balls, three of them from Carlos Arias, who failed to get an out. He was replaced by Richard Folmer, who got Chris Ellington to strike out looking to end the game.

Gonzales said his team's approach in the last inning was the right one.

"You hope to get the guy in the stretch as soon as possible and make him throw as many pitches as we can," he said. "We had our guy in there, in Ellington, and we lost. That's all you can say. (The Chukars) are 10-4, and I think we're better than them."

Eric Arnett, the Brewers' No. 1 draft pick this year, got his second start of the season and came out hot. He struck out four of the first five batters he faced, all swinging, before giving up a walk and a double. He only lasted into the third inning before getting the hook for pitch-count reasons, allowing two runs and lowering his ERA to 8.10 on the year.

The Brewers now host the Casper Ghosts (2-12), who have had trouble this season, especially against the Chukars, who they faced for the entire first week of the season. Game time is at 7:05 PM.

Helena hasn't faced the Ghosts, and Gonzales said he hopes his team has luck against them.

"They're not doing too well," he said. "Hopefully we can get back on track against those guys."

Final: Arizona Brewers 5, Arizona Athletics 3

Arizona Box Score

South Dakota State's RHP Caleb Thielbar with his best outing to date, walking none and allowing no earned runs in five innings; RHP Seth Lintz was wildly effective, but is still all over the place, with four walks, two wild pitches and an HBP in three innings here -- 16 walks in 12.2 innings thus far; busy day both good and bad for third baseman Wayne Dedrick, big at the plate, not so big in the field (.350 average, seven errors on the season); if bonus baby OF Jose Garcia (.836 OPS) ever starts drawing walks, watch out...
