Fans snatch T-Rats tickets for Brewers pitcher's rehab game

By Mike Woods

Post-Crescent staff writer

The phone rang Thursday at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers' ticket office and, according to team president Rob Zerjav, the voice on the other end had this to say:

"I don't know why I'm calling for tickets, but my boyfriend said I had to call because some guy is pitching on Friday and he said that we needed to come out and see him."

"Him" would be Dave Bush, a starting pitcher for Milwaukee who will become the first Brewers player to make a rehab assignment with the minor-league baseball club today in Grand Chute.

"I think this is something we've been waiting for and what the Timber Rattlers fans have been waiting for," Zerjav said.

The home-state Brewers announced in September they were relocating their Class A affiliate to the Fox Cities from West Virginia. A player development contract will keep the team here for at least four seasons. The T-Rats had served as a Seattle Mariners affiliate since 1993.

Calls began streaming into Zerjav's office Wednesday evening after the news about Bush surfaced on the Brewers' Web site.

Once Zerjav confirmed the report, he ordered an announcement at Fox Cities Stadium and fans quickly began to get in line to buy tickets for Friday's game.

"We had presold about 2,000," Zerjav said, "and we've sold about 1,000 tickets from last night until about noon (Thursday). We're hoping that continues as word continues to get out. We're hoping by the end of (Thursday) we'll be around 4,000 to 4,500, then have a nice walk-up Friday."

The stadium's capacity is 5,500.

Bush is scheduled to start and pitch the first three or four innings against West Michigan. He has been on the disabled list since June 23 with an injury to the triceps muscle on his throwing arm.

"We've checked with the Brewers and we want to just make things go as smoothly for him as possible," Zerjav said. "He's here to do his job; it's not a sideshow for us."

Zerjav said Bush likely will arrive at the stadium, do a pregame workout, perhaps sign a few autographs, pitch his innings, speak to the media and leave.

"From my experience with rehab assignments when we were part of the Mariners, they come in, they're pretty down to earth and they want to get their work done," Zerjav said. "They like to talk to the other guys on the team, and the other guys want to see how a major league pitcher goes about his business.''

If all goes well, Bush is scheduled to pitch for Class AA Huntsville on Wednesday and return to the Brewers July 20.

But for one day, the Timber Rattlers get to have a Brewer as one of their own.

"We're hoping for a sellout," Zerjav said. "It will be interesting to see what (fans') interest level is in seeing a Brewer pitch here."

Timber Rattlers ticket purchase at the gate Sunday will benefit cancer patients

The Post-Crescent

If you're planning to attend Timber Rattlers game Sunday and haven't bought a ticket yet, Sarah Janssen politely asks you to purchase it at the gate.

"For every ticket that is purchased on game day, the Timber Rattlers will donate $1 to the four charities we raise money for," said Janssen, organizer of Aflac's fourth annual Strike Out Cancer Day.

Those charities include Families of Children with Cancer, Marshfield Clinic Department of Pediatric Oncology, Community Benefit Tree and Aflac's Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Janssen has helped with fundraising for the Aflac center and also participated in a joint effort between Aflac and Fox Sports Network to give 50 Milwaukee Brewers tickets to Children's Hospital of Milwaukee cancer patients. After seeing the impact that event had on families, she decided four years ago to organize a similar event in the Fox Valley.

About 200 people and their families going through cancer treatment have been invited to the game.

Final: Wisconsin 5, West Michigan (Tigers) 2

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Big crowd sees Dave Bush & a Rattlers win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI -- A crowd of over 5,400 were on hand at Time Warner Cable Field to see Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Dave Bush make a rehab start for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on his way back to the big leagues. They got to see that and a Rattlers 5-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday night. Brett Lawrie homered to break a 1-1 tie and give the Rattlers a lead they would not relinquish.

Wisconsin (43-41 overall, 9-5 second half) scored a first inning run without the benefit of a hit. West Michigan starter Brandon Hamilton walked Juan Sanchez to start the inning. Lorenzo Cain drew a one-out walk and Corey Kemp was issued a two-out free pass to load the bases. Brock Kjeldgaard drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in the go-ahead run.

Sanchez saved a run in the top of the fourth inning. Brent Wyatt tried to score from second on a single to right by Billy Nowlin, but the throw from Sanchez to catcher Martin Maldonado at the plate was in time for the out.

But, the Whitecaps (52-33 overall, 9-6 second half) tied the game against Bush in the top of the fifth inning. Ben Guez reached on an error to start the frame. A two-out single by Angel Flores sent Guez home with the tying run. Cody Adams relieved Bush and got the final out of the frame.

Bush allowed one unearned run over 4-2/3 innings. He gave up four hits, did not walk a batter, struck out five, and wrapped up his night just under his pitch limit of 55.

The game did not stay tied long. Lawrie lined his ninth homer of the season over the left field wall with two outs in the bottom of the fifth against reliever Victor Larez. The homer was Lawrie's first since June 5 and gave the Rattlers a 2-1 lead.

Wisconsin added to their lead in the sixth inning. Maldonado scored from second when the Whitecaps shortstop Gustavo Nunez threw wildly to first on an attempt at an inning-ending double play.

Guez homered off Adams in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to one run, but Wisconsin answered again in the bottom of the inning. The West Michigan defense gave a little help.

Sanchez was at second base with two outs and Lawrie sent a grounder to the hole at short. Nunez kicked the ball into the Timber Rattlers bullpen and Sanchez scored. Then, Nunez just left the ball in the bullpen and returned to his defensive thinking the play was dead. Lawrie kept running and didn't stop until he had scored to put the Rattlers up 5-2.

West Michigan had one last chance as they loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth inning against Adams. Brandon Ritchie relieved Adams and got out of the jam in style. He struck out Jordan Lennerton and got Guez to ground into a nifty 4-3 double play turned by Lawrie at second.

Ritchie pitched a scoreless ninth and picked up his first save as a Rattler. He recorded the final out of the game with a strikeout as 5,433, the second biggest home crowd of the season stood and cheered.

Wisconsin finished the season series against the Whitecaps 5-1. West Michigan qualified for the Midwest League playoffs as the wild card in the Eastern Division and has the second best record in the league.

The Timber Rattlers welcome the South Bend Silver Hawks to town for the start of a three game series on Saturday night. Evan Frederickson (3-4, 4.55) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Silver Hawks have Randy Rodriguez (1-7, 5.40) set to start. Game time is 6:35 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

LHP Brandon Ritchie continues to open eyes, what a job here; Juan Sanchez, shifting to right field with Lorenzo Cain in town, on base three times...

Fans flock to Fox Cities Stadium to see Dave Bush make rehab start for Rattlers

By Cory Jennerjohn

Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE - This was why the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were so giddy about being in the Brewers family.

Traffic snaked all the way back from North Casaloma to U.S. 41 as 5,433 fans came to see Dave Bush make the first Brewers rehab start in a black and maroon uniform.

And the crowd didn't leave disappointed.

The 29-year-old right hander looked solid by striking out five in 4 2/3 in the prescribed 55 pitches. He struck out the side in the second on 77 and 67 mph breaking balls before finishing off the inning with an 87 mph fastball.

"It felt good," said Bush, who has been on the disabled list since June 23 with a micro tear of the right triceps. "I haven't pitched to a hitter in about three weeks, so I was excited to get back on the mound in a game situation."

The game, which turned out to be a 5-2 Timber Rattlers' win, was supposed to be another Friday night Midwest League game against West Michigan. As of Tuesday, fewer than 2,000 fans had purchased tickets.

The phones were ringing off the hook the next day when it was announced that the Brewers fourth starter would take the hill at Fox Cities Stadium, making it a sellout five hours before game time. The crowd was 54 shy of tying the season high set in the season opener.

"This is one of the perks to being affiliated with a team so close," said Timber Rattlers president Rob Zerjav. "Yeah, it's everything and more that we had hoped for."

Bush's season was going fine with a 3-1 record and a 4.38 ERA until his right arm was hit by a Hanley Ramirez line drive in the first inning of a game against the Marlins on June 4. He tried to gut it out with three subsequent starts, but after failing to get past the fifth in any of those games he admitted to arm fatigue.

"I don't know," he said. "I've tossed the idea around in my head. I'm not sure it would've made a whole lot of difference. The injury occurred when I got hit. It wasn't something that I made any worse by pitching. I probably delayed the healing a little bit, but I would've needed three to four weeks right off the bat anyways."

Bush did allow a run and four hits but for the most part, the Wake Forest standout made a West Michigan team, that came into the game batting .276, look silly with pinpoint location coupled with an array of speeds.

"He's got a few pitches to work with there," said Wisconsin manager Jeff Isom. "He's got a curveball, he's got a cutter, slider, sinker, he'll throw a four-seam fastball. Yeah, that's what he does. He surprised me. I've only seen him a handful of times that he's been on TV, but he definitely kept those hitters off balance."

The moment the fourth-round selection of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 2001 draft trotted out to take the mound after the national anthem, he was serenaded by a throng of support - many of whom had to miss the first inning while hopelessly sitting in traffic.

"It was fun," said Bush, who loved the fact that he could toss his everyday major league baseball, which was switched with the minor league version when the Whitecaps took the mound. "My preference would not be to be here, I prefer to pitch in a big league game. But it was very convenient to be able to drive up here and be this close and not have to fly out somewhere."

Bush's next start is scheduled for July 15 for Class AA Huntsville at Mississippi.

Link Report Bonus:

This Maine article focuses to begin on Tigers farmhand Charlie Furbush, then discusses Mark Rogers --

Furbush is next scheduled to pitch tonight against the Brevard County Manatees - a team that includes right-hander Mark Rogers, the Milwaukee Brewers' 2004 first round draft pick from Orrs Island.

Rogers has battled a shoulder injury for almost three years.

Rogers, who was unavailable for an interview, is on a 50-pitch count, according to his pitching coach Fred Dabney.

"He's been outstanding. His velocity is back in the mid-90s which is a tribute to him, the hard work that he's put in and the athlete that he is," said Dabney. "Our biggest goal for Mark this year is to make sure he stays healthy the whole year. Keep him off the DL."

Dabney said Rogers has come a long way mentally dealing with the prognosis.

"Going through something like that is very hard," said Dabney. "Some days are better than others with the way he feels. He didn't know how he was going to bounce back - the normal things of pitching. He was cautious. Now he's understanding what he's supposed to feel like - what's normal."

Rogers spent 2004 in the Arizona Rookie League, 2005 with low-Class A West Virginia Power and the beginning of 2006 with Brevard County before needing surgery six months later to repair a labral tear. In June 2008, Rogers underwent a second surgery to remove scar tissue.

In April, he made his first minor league appearance in nearly three years.

Rogers was scheduled to pitch for Brevard County on Friday night but the game was rained out, which could set up a matchup between Rogers and Furbush. Rogers has started 13 games this season, with an 0-2 record and a 1.84 ERA. He has struck out 29 batters in 29 1/3 innings.

Final: Huntsville 4, Chattanooga (Dodgers) 3

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Hand Guides Huntsville Past Lookouts

Stars Slow Down Chattanooga For Second Straight Night

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Donovan Hand spun seven strong innings and Huntsville survived a late rally to hang to defeat Chattanooga 4-3 Friday night in the third of a four-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars won their second in a row to improve to 9-10 in the second half and 47-41 overall, while the Lookouts dropped to 8-10 in the second half and 38-49 overall. The Stars lifted their road record to 29-19 and evened the season series at nine games apiece.

The Stars scored first for a second straight night and did so in the first inning again when Drew Anderson doubled home Shane Justis. The Lookouts tied the game in the home second when Eddy Perez belted his sixth home run of the season off of Hand. The Lookouts first baseman wound up with three hits and finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

J.R. Hopf and Yohannis Perez singled to open the fifth inning and advanced a base on a Hand sacrifice bunt before Adam Stern delivered a single to plate Hopf with the go-ahead run and move Perez to third base. Jesus Castillo then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Perez to score to make it 3-1 Huntsville. Stern moved to second on the wild pitch but was thrown out trying to steal third base before Justis and Anderson singled to keep the inning going. Castillo was lifted after five frames, yielding three runs on nine hits, walking one and fanning two. He suffered the loss to fall to 4-7 on the season, with two of his defeats at the hands of the Stars. Kevin Melillo blasted a one-out home run, his eighth, off of Francisco Felix in the sixth inning to extend the visitors' lead to 4-1.

Hand blanked the Looks over the next five frames and did so by stranding Russ Mitchell at third base with one out in the seventh after he tripled off the wall in center field. The right-hander allowed nine hits, did not walk a batter and fanned three to improve to 7-2. Hand has held the Lookouts to two runs over two starts and two relief outings covering 20 1/3 innings. Rob Wooten took over in the eighth and surrendered two-out, run-scoring hits to Andrew Lambo and Perez that cut the lead to 4-3 but left the bases loaded by getting Justin Sellers to fly out to end the inning. Mike McClendon then retired the side in order in the ninth, with two strikeouts, to earn his first save since April 23 at Carolina.

The series wraps up Saturday night with left-hander David Welch taking the mound for the Stars against Lookouts' southpaw Alberto Bastardo. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Sounds Blanked By Express, 3-0

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds were shutout by the Round Rock Express, 3-0, on Friday evening at historic Greer Stadium. The shutout was the Sounds' ninth of the season and second this series by Round Rock.

Round Rock starter Polin Trinidad (1-0) earned his first Triple-A win after striking out five and allowing four hits over eight scoreless innings.

The Express loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but Sounds starter Chris Cody induced a double play to Round Rock second baseman Edwin Maysonet to get out of the jam.

Round Rock took a 1-0 lead when Trinidad doubled home Chad Spann in the top of the second inning. Trinidad's double was his first Triple-A hit of his career.

Sounds second baseman Hernan Iribarren ended a no-hit bid in the bottom of the fifth, singling off Trinidad and extending his hitting streak to nine games.

The Express added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Yordany Ramirez reached base on a single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a Sounds throwing error. Jonathan Fixler then brought home Ramirez on an infield groundout, making the score 2-0.

Reggie Abercrombie doubled to centerfield to lead off the top of the seventh, and was brought home on a John Gall single that gave the Express a 3-0 advantage.

Angel Salome hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning to start the rally for the Sounds, followed by Adam Heether reaching base on a fielding error by the Express. Trinidad then stranded both runners on base by retiring the next three Sounds in order to get out of the jam.

Cody (3-4) picked up the tough loss after throwing his fourth quality start for the Sounds, allowing one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Chad Paronto picked up his 15th save of the season in the Express win.
