Adam McCalvy:

Triple-A Nashville infielder Adam Heether was named the Brewers Minor League player of the month for June and Class A Brevard County right-hander Evan Anundsen won pitcher of the month honors. Heether, 27, batted .348 for the month with three homers and 14 RBIs in 26 games, and Anundsen was 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA in four starts. Both are home-grown players; Heether was Milwaukee's 11th-round Draft pick in 2003 and Anundsen was a fourth-round pick in 2006.

Huntsville scores 1 2 in the 1st against J.D. "The Real Deal" Durbin... yes that's a self proclaimed nick name. After his first professional inning which was scoreless he came back into the dugout and told a teammate, "See, I told you I was the real deal!", it stuck.

Steve interviews Minor League Pitching Coordinator Lee Tunnell. They discuss developing pitchers, where they start, and how they progress. They also discuss Bucci at length, a different take on his promotion to AA than we had originally heard. I highly recommend this excellent interview, it's longer than the usual interview, but very informative.

Bucci's start powers Brewers past Chukars

By JASON SCOTT - Helena Independent Record

Nick Bucci's stuff was as good as he could've hoped for Thursday night.

During the Brewers' 2-0 win over Idaho Falls at Kindrick Legion Field, the Helena starter got ahead, used good pitch location and worked quickly to stymie the Chukars.

Idaho Falls scrambled for two hits across seven innings while striking out nine and walking none, earning his third win in four starts.

"I just went out there to be aggressive, I worked quick, I was throwing a lot of strikes and everything went good," said Bucci, a 6-foot, 2-inch righty who hails from Ontario. "I had my defense behind me and tried to go after guys."

Bucci's effort was nearly matched by Idaho Falls starter Sugar Ray Marimon, who went five strong innings while scattering six hits. The Brewers used the small-ball approach, using bunts, hit-and-run plays and aggressive baserunning to get their two runs across.

"That guy (Marimon) was good too," Brewers manager Rene Gonzales said after the game. "He was pretty much right there with Bucci. The guy was working well and that's what we have to do to win."

Despite Marimon's best efforts, Helena was able to get a pair of runs across the plate. In the third inning, Joey Paciorek walked and stole second base. A deep fly to center by Josh Prince got Paciorek to third and an error by Chukars shortstop Angel Franco allowed him to score.

The Brewers found a way to score again in the fifth. With two outs, Prince reached second on a Mike Brownstein single, then headed for third on a hit-and-run by Scott Krieger that pulled Franco deep into the hole. Prince only sped up going around third as Gonzales sent him home and Franco's throw home was toward third base, allowing the speedy shortstop to put an insurance run on the board.

"That play was pretty cool, wasn't it?" Gonzales said with a smile. "We had to scratch for those two runs tonight. We're going to have to force the issue in some cases. It's not the plan going in, it's just what the game dictated."

While the Brewers were finding ways to score, Bucci was finding ways to get Idaho Falls batters out. The hurler, who will celebrate his 19th birthday next Friday, has worked quickly in each of his four starts and has a team-high three wins. He sports a 4.71 ERA over 21 innings. In that span, he's struck out 17 batters while walking just three.

"I make a conscious effort to work fast," Bucci said. "It keeps defense on their toes and then they make plays for us."

Bucci's outing was backed up by reliever Michael Fiers, who pitched two innings out of the bullpen and allowed no hits, earning his fourth save of the year. Fiers stranded Franco on first in the ninth inning - only the third Chukars' baserunner - with a strikeout that ended the game.

The win stops a two-game skid and puts Helena back in second place in the Pioneer League North division, tied with the Great Falls Voyagers. The Missoula Osprey are a half game ahead.

"We're a real good team," Bucci said. "The breaks weren't going our way in the last few games but tonight we battled through to get the win."

The Brewers again welcome the Chukars to Kindrick tonight at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) for the rubber match of the three-game series.

So when you listened to Lee Tunnell's interview above, it took some of the fantasy about the "names placed in a hat to see who will go to Huntsville story" -- who knows, maybe there's truth in both accounts; CF / C Michael Roberts behind the dish for this one...

RHP Amaury Rivas retired the first 12 batters he faced, the 13th reached on an error. Only allowed his first "real" baserunner in the 6th on a leadoff walk, which was followed by a GIDP; his no-hit bid (he was only four outs away in a seven-inning game) ended on a groundball single to right by the next batter. Rivas K'd six in his six innings; RHP Mark Willinsky stranded a man on third base to preserve the shutout win; the 23-year-old Rivas sports good peripheral numbers, and will be challenged outside the confines of FSL ballparks in 2010...

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Stars Blank Chattanooga to End Losing Streak

Looks Limited to Four Hits by Three Huntsville Hurlers

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Mike Jones spun six scoreless innings and Drew Anderson drove in two runs to push Huntsville past Chattanooga 3-0 Thursday night in the second of a four-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars snapped a season-high six-game skid to improve to 8-10 in the second half and 46-41 overall, while the Lookouts dropped to 8-9 in the second half and 38-48 overall. The Stars earned their fifth shutout win of the season after allowing 45 runs on 58 hits in the previous five games.

Shane Justis tripled with one out in the first inning and scored when Anderson followed with a double, as the Stars scored first for the first time in seven games. Jonathan Lucroy then doubled with one out to drive in Anderson and push Kevin Melillo, who had walked, to third base. The rally stymied when Lucroy was tagged out trying to make his way back to the bag on a ground ball to second base.

Justis led off the third with a walk and scored on a double by Anderson, who drove in his fourth run of the series. Lookouts starter J.D. Durbin then retired nine of the last ten hitters he encountered and left after five frames, charged with three runs on five hits, while walking two and fanning one. He suffered the loss to fall to 1-3.

Josh Bell led off the Lookouts second inning with a double but never advanced, as Jones struck out the next two hitters and ended the inning with a groundout. He then worked out of a situation where he had runners at first and second base and one out in the third by getting Ramon Nivar to bounce into a force play and Russ Mitchell to ground out. The right-hander retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced, six with a groundout, and finished by inducing a dozen ground ball outs. He struck out four and walked one to earn his second victory of the year with the Stars and sixth overall.

Juan Sandoval took over in the seventh and retired all six batters he faced before giving way to Rob Wooten, who gave up a leadoff double to Nivar before striking out the next two hitters and getting a ground ball out to end the game. Wooten earned his third save in as many chances.

The series continues Friday with right-hander Donovan Hand taking the mound for the Stars against Lookouts' right-hander Jesus Castillo. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
