Roy Halladay

I am not crazy about trading either one, but if you can trade one (not both) and get back a pitcher like Roy Halladay that you can make a run with this season and next, I think you have to do it.
I think adding Halladay (at the expense of Gamel or Escobar) would make the Brewers contendors in 2010.

I just don't think Halladay makes a near .500 team in 2009 automatic contenders. I'd be much more interested if the Brewers were playing at a playoff level without him.

So, while we would get him for 1 1/2 years, I doubt it helps enough in the first year. To me, the entire payoff would likely be 2010. (Thus, diminishing his value)

I really hope they dont trade Escobar or Gamel. We need both of those guys to be competative into the next 5 years.

Why do you say that? There aren't other minor league options? Or a trade or free agent signing wouldn't be possible to fill either 3B or SS? I am not crazy about trading either one, but if you can trade one (not both) and get back a pitcher like Roy Halladay that you can make a run with this season and next, I think you have to do it.

I agree with you Invader. One would definitely be a part of the deal and I believe Lawrie would be as well. The only way the Brewers may get out of giving up two of the three prospects is if they add a big salary (Rolen, Rios) and work that out. A little birdie has confirmed to me that the Brewers are legit in this deal. However, as KR mentioned, Halladay may not want to be Brewer. If he dropped his no-trade clause and became a Brewer, it would be right at the deadline because Halladay wants to see all his options out there. I believe the Brewers would fall behind the Phillies, Dodgers, etc in Halladay's mind and he wouldn't want to commit too early.

Halladay makes us a contender this year (we already are) especially with the schedule over the next 30 games or so and Halladay picthing 6 of those games instead of Burns, huge upgrade. 2010 we'll be favorites for the division barring HUGE improvements from division rivals.

If you can get away with only trading one of the two its a big win for the Brewers!!!!

Disappointing to hear that Halladay may not want to come here. I would hope Melvin and Ash would sell him on the fact that we're only a couple games out of first, went to the playoffs last year with basically the same team, and he would have a superior caliber bullpen backing him up. Also he would have one of the best offenses in the NL to give him run support. They could also point to how the Brewers fan community embraced CC last year...Halladay would almost instantly get that same level of support. He'd only be here for a year and a half (probably), so it's not like he'd have to move his family or something.

I would be in favor of taking on either Wells or Rios if they take back Hall. Also, that would mean that we gave them "less" in the deal. Wells would not be a bad replacement for when Cam leaves or retires next year.

Wells' contract would be crippling to a team like the Brewers even if they did take Hall in return. To have that amount of money on the books through 2014 would prevent the Brewers from making any serious moves until the contract expired or Wells was traded. Toronto would have to be willing to eat a large portion of his salary for it to be a worthwhile move for the Brewers.

No way. Vernon Wells contract may be the worst in baseball, with Soriano being the possible exception. With a number of young guys needing contracts in the next few years, no way the Brewers can be saddled with that thing. I agree it would be a fair deal. The Brewers are just not in a position to make it.

I think the Cardinals will be players as well, although I don't know enough about their farm system to ascertain whether they have the prospects or not. After the year he's having, the Blue Jays may ask for Colby Rasmus. I read somewhere over the All-Star break that Halladay likes St. Louis and is close friends with Chris Carpenter, so who knows.

What would you do if you were Roy Halladay? Trying to be impartial, I would probably pick the Dodgers (if they had interest) or Philly if I were most concerned with winning a championship. LA has a very comfortable division lead, and while the Phillies aren't leading by as much as they would like, the NL East isn't as strong this year as in years past. Only three games separate the top 4 teams in the NL Central. At this point in time, it's a much bigger gamble for him to come here (St. Louis or Milwaukee) than it would be to go to Philly or LA. However, if the Brewers can really mop up over the next two weeks with (hopefully) favorable matchups, maybe the makeup of the division will change with Brewers coming out on top.

A couple interesting tidbits up on MLB Trade Rumors:

- Top officials from the Phillies, Brewers, Rangers and White Sox were in attendance at yesterday's Jays-Red Sox game and figure to watch this afternoon, according to Ken Fidlin of the Toronto Sun.

- The last two Toronto GMs are expected to watch: Pat Gillick on behalf of the Phils and Gord Ash, who drafted Halladay, for the Brewers.

I had not realized Ash drafted Halladay. That's interesting.

The first thing they mention is the Brewers and Doc.

Notice they said JJ Hardy could be available "in the right deal".

Would the Brewers really prefer to have Escobar at SS right now despite already seemingly establishing themselves as buyers?

I think they absolutely prefer to have Escobar at SS right now. They just can't tip their hand, otherwise Hardy has less value in a trade. If Hardy is not traded I would be surprised, and I think it would be a mistake not to trade him. His value continues to plummet, and if the Brewers keep him through the season he will be even less valuable in the offseason after he posts his .240 AVG with 17 HR's. I know the J.J. Hardy groupies will jump all over me for saying that, but I honestly believe this big second half everyone is expecting from him is not happening. Hardy does not have a great swing, teams have figured out how to pitch him, and he shows no signs of making any adjustments.

I am starting to think the deal might be Hardy and Lawrie for Halladay. Maybe we'd throw in a B-type pitcher too.
I guess I'd rather deal Hardy and Gamel, but I am afraid others are right when they say the Jays probably have little interest in Hardy. I really like Lawrie's raw power potential, and think he could be a star. I'm not so sure with Gamel. Don't get me wrong I think he will be a solid player, but just not a star player.

Brett Lawrie will have a better major league career than Alcides Escobar.
I agree Lawrie will put up better offensive numbers than Alcides, but Lawrie sounds like a guy we can hope to be average at second, or he will be a corner OF'er. Escobar, is already a potential gold glove defender according to scouts.

I'd weep tears of joy if the Jays took just Hardy and Lawrie for Halladay.

Me too. It's just so unrealistic though. I think any Halladay deal would start with Escobar and Lawrie. Halladay is a top 5 pitcher in baseball at worst and is signed through next year.

Hardy might be available in "the right deal" suggests to me the Brewers are trying to get a third team involved, perhaps the Red Sox. Red Sox get Hardy and send some prospects along with some Brewers' prospects to Toronto. Halladay becomes a Brewer.

Thats EXACTLY what I was thinking. A year and a half of JJ Hardy who even though is slumping is still in the middle of the pack for type A infielders according to the latest Elias Ranking so hes gotta be worth 2 decent prospects. The question is which teams in the playoff hunt could use a short stop? The Redsox, Tigers, Mariners, Twins and the Giants come to mind. So what kind of prospects could they add to sweeten the pot for Toronto so we can hold onto Escobar and Gamel?
