Deal for Branyan

What are the chances we could deal for Branyan.

 

Lineup would look better than anything were putting out there now.

We keep McGehee in the starting lineup and put Counsell on the bench where he is more valuable.

Defense will drop off a little bit, but Hall and Gamel just aren't getting it done at 3B.

Big question is whether Hart should be hitting leadoff.

Branyan 3B, McGehee 2B, Counsell Bench > McGehee 3B, Counsell 2B

Counsell's OBP and defense make him very valuable. If they wanted a LH power bat at 3B, they'd play Gamel.

I thought about this the other day. Branyan would be a nice piece. Start him at 3B most days with Billy going vs the occasional lefty. Send Gamel back down to AAA so he can start everyday.

Unfortunately the time to get Branyan was in the off season when all he would cost is money. I think our 3B situation is solid with Gamel and McGehee right now.

The Brewers never had a chance to resign Branyan in the off season unless the Brewers would have extremely overpaid for Branyan. The Brewers would have had to over pay Branyan for him to stay because Branyan wanted to be a full time starter and to not be in a platoon all year. The Brewers couldn't guarantee Branyan a spot to start all year at either when Gamel was knocking on the door and having Hall there with a big contract.

Besides, it's all moot because Seattle isn't going to be a seller unless they fall off a cliff soon.

No Melvin basically could have offered a $2.5m contract to Branyan and he would have signed. The Brewers didn't want him back blocking Gamel and so he was basically handed to Seattle. That said he isn't going to likely ever play 3B again except in an emergency situation.
