Javier Vazquez

No idea why they'd take Hall
Hall would be a salary dump for the Brewers and they would be getting a minor prospect in return otherwise this deal wouldn't be able to work for the Brewers. Vazquez is to expensive over the next two years if the Brewers keep both Hall and Suppan so one has to go and Hall is the more logical choice. Hall is actually the smaller contract between Vazquez and Hall. The Braves would only have to hold onto Hall for the next season and his contract is less than what Vazquez's would be so it is not financially crippling for the Braves.

I don't see the Brewers getting Vazquez without putting Hall or Suppan in the deal. The Brewers may have to add in a better prospect in return for the Braves but that would be about it.

I also don't get the opposition to Vazquez. He's always been an underrated pitcher. His k/bb has been above 3 each of the last four seasons. He's really a very good pitcher, and would be a much better talent that I had been expecting the Brewers to acquire. Barring injury, he'll easily be worth 11.5 mil next season. I could probably be convinced to trade Lawrie for him, though I'd also rather do something like Hart/Taylor Green.

So their motivation is a nugget and a slightly cheaper contract for a completely useless player? Still don't see it. They must really like Hart in your scenario because when you add in Hall they don't save much money here. About 2.5 this year and 3 next year. I don't think a few million, a nugget, and a moderate upgrade in right is worth taking on Hall while giving up a productive pitcher. Pretty much anyone would be an upgrade for them in right, they don't have to give up a good pitcher and take on a terrible player with a terrible contract to get the mighty Corey Hart and his mighty mid 700s ops.

Thats why in the later part of my post I said I don't see the deal getting done unless Hall is added into the deal otherwise it just doesn't work for the Brewers financially. If Vazquez was a rental I could see the Brewers just trading Hart for Vazquez but with Vazquez being owed 11.5m for the next 3 years the Brewers would have to be able to dump one of their higher contracts.

I'm suprised so many are anti-Vazquez. His value has been averaging about 5 wins a year, thats tremendous. Plus, he's signed through next year. Hart and a non-elite prospect makes alot of sense. Taylor Green would fit the Braves future needs real well.
Vazquez is having an exceptional year (for him). Four of his last five seasons, he's been very Suppan-like with ERA's between 4.42 and 4.91. He'd be an improvement but he's not worth either Gamel or Escobar. I don't see him as a guy you'd want to count on to win a big game either.

Vazquez is a very good player easily worth his salary and a much better pitcher than Suppan. You can't compare ERAs, the defenses are just too different. Vazquez's FIPs for 2006-2009: 3.86, 3.80, 3.74, 2.95. Suppan's: 4.70, 4.42, 5.51, 5.22. And Vazquez is an actual 200+ inning pitcher, the last time he was below 200 innings was 2004 when he was at 198. The Brewers can easily afford Vazquez next year by letting go of Looper and Kendall.

I had wanted him in the off-season when Chicago was dangling him. But alas, there were two others I wanted that did not fair so well (Garland and Sheets).

Also, is he under control for three more years or just one more year? I am confused by Nate's wording in his last post.

Well, if anyone wants to see Javy, he is on WGN tonight versus the Cubs.

As to why the Braves would want to trade him, they sound squeezed for cash. In order to take on McLouth's very reasonable salary they had to do some manipulating if i recall correctly. What they are rumored to be looking for is an outfield bat, so Hart would make sense. This trade is a long shot in my opinion, but maybe the cash crunch there or elsewhere will help the Brewers out.

Also, I share the opinion that Doug Melvin is quite honest. He either answers directly or gives an answer that needs to be parsed. If it isn't a blanket yes or no, you have to look at the exact words.

The Braves have more pitching than they can use so they can easily replace Vazquez in the rotation and get better players in the field. The big issue again is that Vazquez has shown to be super durable so that its less replacing him but replacing all of his 200-220 innings. The next issue is do the Braves want some one for this year or someone for next.
