Now we can address our "speed" problem

Since we've hit on just about every "Stats vs. Scouts" hotbutton in this thread already, I'll add one more:

To the poster who said St. Louis won the series without having base stealers, I'll say that they countered that with LaRussa's penchant for bunting successfully and making "productive outs."

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."

Just putting the ball in play kills power.

I'm not talking about throwing the bat at the ball like in a hit and run.

And it really doesn't increase OBP because players become less selective when just putting the ball in play.

I don't get this. I guess if you're just throwing the bat out there, then yeah - this would be true. But if you're cutting down on strikeouts by being more selective at the plate and swinging at better pitches, and laying off the crappy ones, you should be able to cut down on strikeouts, and make contact more often and with more authority.

I think that we could use another power bat, instead of speed. We need more than just Hall and Fielder hitting the homers and driving guys in. We COULD use a speedy guy, but i wouldn't pay much for one. I also think we could use a little bit of help in our bullpen. We have our closer set, but I'm not exactly confident with the rest of the group. The last problem we need to continue working on is to find a new team for Mench. I think that we should trade him and fill some of these holes that I listed.
