Minor League Transactions -- Potential FA's Henderson, Arlis Return; 12 released

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Posted earlier in the injury update thread:

Huntsville Times:

Stars first baseman Kevin Melillo hyperextended his left arm Wednesday night when a West Tenn runner collided with him while he was taking a throw on a bunt attempt. Melillo was in a full-arm sling, and he said the plan was to keep it immobilized for around a week.

"There's no doubt I'll be ready for the playoffs," he said.

UPDATE: Melillo has been placed on the 7-day DL retroactive to the 20th.

Not surprising at all to me that Lawrie is already in AA. I thought he was going to be in AA by the end of the year regardless of what he did in A ball. I believe Lawrie will start in AA next year.

We totally appreciate interest and commentary on such topics, but from a logging perspective, let's try to keep commentary on specific transactions in one of the other discussion threads (or a new thread if needed) rather than the transaction thread itself. Thanks.

Colome on DL; Narveson Recalled; Corporan DFA'd (Removed from 40-Man)

That's the link to the thread on the Major League Forum for discussion.

That leaves only Patrick Arlis available to catch in Nashville, unless Angel Salome's finger and rest of his body is good to go.

Should Corporan clear waivers, he'll finish out the string in Nashville. He's among the minor league vets eligible to walk away from the organization in mid-October unless he's re-signed to a 2010 minor league deal or re-added to the 40-man.

Nashville Media Notes:

REDMAN TO JOIN SOUNDS SATURDAY: Outfielder Tike Redman, who previously played for the Sounds from 2000-03 when the club was the Pittsburgh Pirates' Class AAA affiliate, will rejoin Nashville tomorrow in Albuquerque after having his contract purchased from the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. The 32-year-old batted .292 (79-for-271) with five home runs, 36 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases in 74 games this season. Redman -- the Sounds' all-time leader with 32 career triples -- ranks among the franchise's top 10 leaders in several offensive categories. He spent the previous two years within the Baltimore Orioles organization.

Atlantic League Press Release:

The Newark Bears are proud to announce that the contract of outfielder Tike Redman was purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Redman becomes the 13th member of the record-setting Newark Bears who has been picked up by a major league affiliate this season. Redman is a major league veteran who has played for both the Pittsburgh Pirates (2000-2001, 2003-2005) and the Baltimore Orioles (2007). Redman sports a career batting average of .281 in the big leagues. This season, Redman played 74 games with the Newark Bears, and he was batting .292 with 49 runs scored, 7 doubles, 5 home runs, 36 runs batted in, and 10 stolen bases.

Nope, just a shortage of OFs at the upper levels of the minor leagues, particularly bench players to sit behind prospects who need to start. With the callup of Bourgeois Nashville only had 3 OFs on the roster. Huntsville only has four OFs as well, so calling up Drew Anderson would leave them short one OF as well. While a chain of reaction roster moves might be preferable (Anderson to AAA, Gindl to Huntsville, someone from Wisconsin to Brevard, Ellington to Wisconsin), with nine games going on in the minors today they might not have had the logistical ability to do that.

Goes to show you how thin the organization is in OFs right now too.

Redman, Patterson....throwing crap against the wall and seeing what sticks?
Redman did bat .318 his last year with the Orioles and has a .281 life-time average. I'd hardly call that crap as a majority of big leaguers would love to have that average,

News from Wisconsin:

C Corey Kemp has been transferred from Wisconsin to Huntsville.

C Derrick Alfonso has been transferred from Brevard County to Wisconsin.

News from Huntsville:

The Brewers and Stars announced that LHP David Welch has been placed on the 7-Day DL, RHP Brandon Kintzler has been promoted from Helena (paper move for Kintzler, no word on any health issue on Welch).

Now the speculation part -- is Angel Salome going to the DL soon with his finger issue, prompting a Jonathan Lucroy push to AAA? How quickly will Carlos Corporan clear waivers and be eligible in Nashville again? Kemp can also play first base, so that helps out Huntsville while Kevin Melillo is out. Fun time of year in terms of transactions and rewarding fans in the local towns with postseason runs where developmental impact on the big league club isn't affected.

The Brewers have signed an additional bat for the outfield at the upper levels as the season winds down, and as others are set to depart soon for international play.

First was Tike Redman, noted above.

Signed from the independent Atlantic League's Camden Riversharks is 31-year-old Jon Knott, (career statistics), who was second in the Atlantic League in batting (.328) and fourth in doubles (24). Knott is a RH bat and corner outfielder.

Knott made his pro debut in 2002 in San Diego's system, and has 31 career big-league AB's with the Padres and the Orioles.

No official word on placement as of yet (Nashville vs. Huntsville).

More on the Jon Knott signing from Camden:

CAMDEN - The Camden Riversharks announced today that outfielder Jon Knott has signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers organization. He will be joining Milwaukee's AAA team, the Nashville Sounds.

"I am excited to be joining the Brewers organization, and I just hope that I'll be able to go over there and help them make a strong playoff push," said Knott. "If I can continue to swing the bat well, then everything should work out well," he added.

Knott should not have much trouble adjusting to life with the Sounds, as he has nearly six full years of playing experience at the AAA level. Last year, he appeared in 111 games for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs of the International League, where he compiled a .260 batting average and drove in 65 runs, while playing as both an outfielder and first baseman.

This season, Knott played in 73 games with the Riversharks, and proved to be one of the team's most consistent offensive threats. His .328 batting average and eight home runs were tops on the team, and he also drove in 43 runs throughout the course of the season.

"Jon really made us a better team this season," said Riversharks Director of Baseball Operations Jeff Scott. "He came up with a lot of big hits for us in clutch situations, and he never gave at bats away. I wish him the best of luck in Tennessee."

Nashville Media Notes:

IRIBARREN RETURNS TO SOUNDS: Second baseman Hernan Iribarren rejoins the Nashville roster today, one day after being optioned by Milwaukee when P Jeff Suppan was activated from the disabled list. In 11 games during his second stint of the year with the Brewers, Iribarren went 3-for-11 (.273). The infielder is riding an eight-game PCL hitting streak and has hit safely in 22 of his last 25 PCL contests overall. To make room for Iribarren on the roster, infielder Johnny Raburn was placed on the Sounds' disabled list.

CORPORAN ACTIVE, SALOME TO D.L.: Catcher Carlos Corporan has been reinstated from the inactive list after clearing waivers and being outrighted to the Sounds. He was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Friday. To make room for Corporan's return, catcher Angel Salome has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Monday.

Also, newcomer OF Jon Knott has been placed on Nashville's DL, in what seems to be an obvious holding pattern until September's callups free up roster space.

Since it seems like Salome can't seem to recover from his injury, I wonder if they will shut him down for the rest of the season and have him come back fresh and injury-free next year. If that does happen, I wonder if they would add Lucroy to the 40-man and have him start some games in Milwaukee to get him ready for the AFL. Or would it be a total waste to add him to the 40-man just so he could get a few starts in September?

There was a quote I think from Ash who basically guaranteed that a catcher would be called up, so if it isn't Salome (perhaps they are resting him until Sept. 1st so he's fully recovered when he gets to Milwaukee) it will be Corporan or Lucroy. If they manage to trade one or more of the vets (Kendall, Counsell, Looper, Weathers) it will clear up a roster spot to add Corporan or Lucroy.

Good to see him not taking up a spot any more. What will his status be next year? can another team take him in the rule 5 draft?
Wright has been in professional baseball since 2001. Unless he chooses to re-sign a minor league deal with Milwaukee (if the Brewers even offer one up), he'll be a minor league free agent in mid-October.

LHP Sam Narron has been placed on the 7-day DL at Nashville, retro to Thursday the 27th. Most likely a paper move.

The AAA roster is one under the limit and is at 11 pitchers, which should be rectified when RHP Mike Burns rejoins the roster formally on Sunday.

From Adam McCalvy:

Left-hander Chris Capuano was promoted from the Brewers' Phoenix complex to advanced rookie level Helena on Sunday to finish the season. Capuano is trying to work back from a second Tommy John surgery. He'll be a Minor League free agent after the season.

From Chris Mehring's blog post --

LHP Efrain Nieves has been placed on the Temporary Inactive list as of (8/31). Nieves will be joining team Puerto Rico for the IBF (International Baseball Federation) tournament.

RHP Maverick Lasker has been transferred from Arizona to Wisconsin and will be active for tonight's game (8/31) vs Kane County.
