Luke Scott

I realize Corey Hart had a solid double Monday and is prone to some nice hot streaks, but at what point would we think about a left-handed option if he doesn't find some consistency?

I'm not sure how much the Orioles like Luke Scott, but if he could be had for minimal prospects (1 pitcher, 1 position player), I could definitely see him helping the Crew offensively. He's got a .373 OBP and .549 SLG for a .921 OPS, with 14 HR in 195 ABs.

He's on a 1-year, 2.4 MIL deal. The question is, is he a downgrade in the field and if so, does it outweigh his offense? I think if Hart continues to go up and down while sitting with an on-base of around .300 and OPS around .750, he might be worth the move.

Any thoughts?

It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure he's a great fit with the Brewers right now. I think Melvin's priority has to be getting a starting pitcher right now, and if he gets a guy like Scott, that would probably use up most of his realistic trading chips he can afford to expend this year.

Except the argument for not including Hart in a deal for pitching is that there's nobody that could replace him. Scott would certainly do in that regard.

what about a deal for scott and baez? the market for starting pitchers this year is pretty thin, so why not get some bullpen help and another bat. I would love to get decent starting pitcher, but it's almost to the point where it is not worth it. After watching Carlos "Big House" in the 9th last night, I wouldn't mind picking up an established set-up man with closing experience to help out down the road...but then again...scott linebrink.

I agree that possibly Villy should be replaced, or relegated to a lesser role at this point, but I would hope they could simply look at internal options. Maybe someone at AAA could serve that role? Mike Burns strikes me as someone who would make a good 1-2 inning guy as well.

First off: Welcome, lloyd.

Secondly: I don't really think we need any bullpen help. It's doing fine right now, so I wouldn't try fixing something that's not broken.

I understand that, but they are pitching a ton of innings and it seems like we would have to give up too much for average starting pitching. So why not get someone to replace McClung in the bullpen and McClung can be permanently bumped into the rotation. Just a suggestion because I don't want to give up any top prospects for the starting pitching that is available now.

And thank you for the welcome!

The Brewer bullpen isn't really pitching a "ton of innings" compared to other staffs. Remember they went with 4 starters for a while which meant they had 8 guys in the pen and Macha tends not to have a quick hook. None of the guys who've been there all year have higher than the mid 30's in IP. That's about standard. Villanueva has a tendency to have bad outing now and then that's inflated his ERA a bit, but his peripherals remain good. Smith has been a huge upgrade over Julio and Narveson can suck up innings in lost causes.

The broadcasters talk a lot about it, but the reality is they are not in bad shape in the pen.

I just looked at the brewers relief pitchers innings pitched and its not too bad right now, but the real question is, can they keep this up? I mean look at the bullpen and tell me how many guys are having career years. I just don't see it staying this good all year when they are pitching 3 innings every game. Like I said before, a starter would be nice ideally, but that's starting to look like its either going to be a rip-off or nothing at all. So why not add some depth in the bullpen? Especially if you can get it for cheap. I would not mind seeing McClung take the mound every 5th day.

I like Baez, but he makes good money, so I'd rather give a shot to some intriguing in house candidates 1st. John Axford has been a strikeout machine this year, pitching in the mid-90s and topping out at 98. Zack Braddock is another, he's too good for the minors.

I don't see a bunch of AA kids in the bigs in the middle of a playoff race, needless to say. Barring injury, the OF is set, and I think they like the reserves as well.
I agree on Braddock. He is in AA and that is a long way away, but Axford is already in AAA and in two innings there he already has 4 K's. He will help the MLB team some time this year.

Yeah, Kershaw and Volstad were so terrible down the stretch last year after getting called up from AA. Braddock might be more dominant than them because he's used in relief. Braddock could be for the Brewers what K-Rod was for the Angels when they won the series.
