Link Report for Games of Monday, June 29th

Nashville with a huge 3rd Inning, 6 runs... Heether with another HR.

Huntville now down 6-2, but the box for the pitchers shows Wapepah giving up 3 runs, so it may be 7-2.

Another error as Dhanani (playing 3B) rifles a ball into RF and Arnett gives up an unearned run after a lead off double.

edit. Zarraga takes a nasty foul tip off his bare hand, long injury timeout. Fatse has been promoted to WI because of the injuries. Stang and Brownstien are now in Helena, roster moves courtesy of Steve Wendt.

Dillard has only given up 1 run, but has 4BBs to 2Ks the good news is that he's only given up 4 hits through 6. Nashville adds 2 more runs, Katin is 3 for 3 with a HR now, Koshansky also with 2 hit game after I suggest he be released so Heether can use his roster spot.

The H-Crew gives away another run, a bases loaded shallow fly in to LF, Ellington catches the ball and guns home, but Zarraga drops the ball and the runner scores. That play followed by a single and Odorizzi who was a tad shakey in the middle of the inning before a coaching visit to the mound gives up 2 runs that he shouldn't have.

Roberts with a HR, then Arias with a HR that had Wendt really excited, it sounds like he absolutely crushed the ball, tie game now in Helena.

It looks like Brett Whiteside is making the conversion to pitcher. He was being brought into the game in a regular pitching situation but before he could face any batters, he left with a leg injury

Charlotte Bottom 8th

  • Pitcher Change: Brett Whiteside replaces Brandon Rapoza.
  • Pitcher Change: Roque Mercedes replaces Brett Whiteside.
  • Brevard County Manatees Brett Whiteside left the game due to an injured leg.
  • Gregory Sexton lines out to first baseman Chris Errecart.
  • Reid Fronk walks.
  • Ryan Royster walks. Reid Fronk to 2nd.
  • Christian Lopez singles on a fly ball to right fielder Caleb Gindl. Reid Fronk to 3rd. Ryan Royster to 2nd.
  • Shawn Williams grounds into double play, second baseman Eric Farris to shortstop Zelous Wheeler to first baseman Chris Errecart. Christian Lopez out at 2nd.

The score was 8-5 with Brevard leading.

Odorizzi with a real nice job in his 3rd IP. He gives up a double, then saves a run with a real nice hustle play backing up a throw from Krieger to 3B that was airmailed so bad Odorizzi caught it on the fly 25 ft behind 3B. With a runner at 3rd base and 1 out he strikes out the next 2 batters to get out of the inning.

edit. Dykstra hits a 3 run HR on his birthday! Odorizzi in line for the win.

Helena scores 6 in the inning, 9-3 H-Crew. Odorizzi finishes real strong (assuming he's done here after 4 IP), Roberts with a nice play in CF running down a gapper.

Is it just me, or does Logan Schafer have a lot of outfield assists this year? He has another one tonight. Anybody know where I can get an exact number?
Humorously, he threw out Reid Fronk in the 5th, an inning after Fronk had thrown him out.

Ah, the old Larry Yount trick. Between him and his brother, they played in 2857 MLB games!

Lorenzo Cain and Erik Komatsu both in the lineup for the Arizona Rookies tonight!
Carlos George is also making his season debut tonight. I'm glad he didn't have a serious injury, as he's going to have to work hard to top last year's error total of 37 in 46 games.

So, is Roberts a CF who can also play catcher, or a catcher who can also play center field?

Another strong outing for fireballing John Axford tonight. I could see him and CV switching spots real soon.

I would have to guess Naverson would be first. Even though Naverson is a lefty he just is not that good. CV has had some rough outings but Naverson does not bring much to the team

Setting aside the issue that I don't see the team sending down Villanueva, he's more than three years removed from his first MLB appearance (5/23/06) and so would need to clear revocable waivers before being optioned. I don't know about the gentleman's agreement that frequently exists in situations like this, though; it could be that in practice no one is ever blocked from being clearing optional waivers.

I hate high-scoring Nashville games where Escobar, Salome, and Gillespie do almost none of the damage; 2-11 between them, and Salome struck out three times.

Gillespie also had a sac fly in the game - and there was a line drive right at an outfielder. All in all, 1-for-3 with a run and a sac fly isn't bad. Gillespie's quietly been pushing his stats up since he had that slow start in AAA due to having to come back from an injury. He already has 27 walks, about 2.5 times as many as Brendan Katin in 64 fewer plate appearances.

On an unrelated topic, I'm familiar with Joey Paciorek because of his bloodlines, but isn't this his third year in the system and he's still in Rookie ball? I would think that they have to think something of him to not be released by now.

Heether = DeRosa/McGehee? Hopefully he and Katin are impressing other scouts enough where they can be flipped for a starting pitcher.

Coffey, McGehee, Smith... Axford soon to join the list of nuggets?
