2009-06-28 Giants (Sadowski) at Milwaukee (Suppan) : 1:05 PM CT [Brewers lose, 7-0]

...our team outside of Gallardo does not have an ERA of 5.
However, the starters outside of Gallardo do. In addition "unearned" runs also must be overcome. Our other starters look like they are averaging about 3.5 runs given up per start. If a reasonable assumption is that the bullpen is going to give up maybe 1.5 runs in the rest of the game, that would mean 6 runs would be needed to win. I'd guess, the need for 6 or more runs to win is probably not all that uncommon for this team. The stats show an average of 4.6 runs given up per game for the Brewers.

Cubs and Cardinals are giving up about 4.2 per game, so far.

"They don't pay me to win every day, just two out of three..." -- Casey Stengel

Today was a clunker, but winning two out of three against a main rival for a playoff spot at this point was big after another disappointing Minnesota series. The Mets are coming into town very late tonight due to playing on Sunday Night Baseball, and half their team is on the DL. Beat up the guys not named Johan Santana and I have a good feeling about winning another series to close out the homestand.

This was a fairly disappointing game to be at considering the outcome.

I was fairly amused by Pablo Sandoval's pre-at-bat routine, though. They pointed it out on Baseball Tonight last night so I watched for it today. Before he got to the home plate area he drew either a cross or an X in the dirt, walked across it, came in the batters box, stepped directly out in front of the batters box, knocked the dirt out of his cleats twice for each foot, then back in the batters box, then out to the side of the box to adjust his gloves, then he was ready.

You can add that to the list of guys with somewhat excessive pre-at-bat routines, lol. The other thing I noticed is Braun was sporting some Michael Jackson as his batting music.

At least today I was distracted by the pleasure of having my nephew in the park, and regular visits from bensheeps' son. We also got to see the inside of the field level first aid station (for a minor injury), and rode a service elevator up to the club level.

0-4 for June, with Tuesday's game coming up. When that one's over, I think I will celebrate the end of the month.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Riding an 0'fer on the month is brutal, Hawing. This was my first loss on the year, but I don't make it to nearly as many games as you do.

One other thing I found amusing was during the sausage race the PA announcer made a point to say "the sausages are coming past the Giants dugout, watch out for opposing catchers!" ... that and when the full sized Chorizo plowed over the mini-Chorizo.

I'll concur about the uncomfortableness of the stadium bowl. If you were in the sun (we weren't) you baked. If you were in the shade, it was just a warm air bubble all around you. No air flow on such a windy day. I was very surprised.

This was probably the most boring game I've ever attended. Here are the only things that I remember hearing any cheering for:

1) Mike Cameron's base hit in the 2nd inning.

2) Three 3-2 pitches to Randy Winn in the top of the 2nd inning before the bases loaded walk.

3) The sausage race (although I barely did more than stand and watch--and laugh at the Chorizo-Little Chorizo exchange.

4) Macha coming to the mound to remove Suppan

The rest of the game, I just sat there. I stood up in between innings to stretch my legs. I leaned forward with nearly every pitch, then slouched back in disappointment.

Completely "blah." Almost a waste of a Sunday. At least I got to tailgate before the game.

That is an odd contrast to the game I went to in May where we got cold because they let the air flow through.

Philly had Hamels and a bunch of stiffs last year and won. Blanton got hot at the end of the year, the other guys were serviceable and their bullpen was stellar. They also scored like crazy. No reason the Brewers can't get to the same place although it will take an improvement from here.
This sentiment seems to be fairly common, but the stats don't bear that out.

Last year the Brewers finished second in team ERA at 3.85, the Phillies were 4th at 3.88. The Dodgers were far and away the best club with a team ERA of 3.68.
