Philadelphia can get away with suspect pitching because they have a dominant offense. Our offense is above average but not nearly good enough to overcome our lousy starters other than Gallardo. I will be shocked if this team makes the playoffs with Gallardo and 4 number 5 starters.

What did we make the playoffs with last year? Half a year of both Sheets and CC, Bush, Soup, Parra, and McClung. This year we have Yo, Bush (when he gets back), Soup, Looper, Parra, McClung.

Philly had Hamels and a bunch of stiffs last year and won. Blanton got hot at the end of the year, the other guys were serviceable and their bullpen was stellar. They also scored like crazy. No reason the Brewers can't get to the same place although it will take an improvement from here.

The Brewers offense this year has an OPS .12 points lower than the Phillies last year. So their offense was better than ours currently is but not by a ton. This year they are better but the argument was that teams with weak rotations can make the playoffs like the Phillies last year, and really the Brewers last year.

I realize that they didnt have Ibanez last year but I was talking about this year. At any rate they had a dominant offense with Burrell and this year with Ibanez. We dont have nearly the lineup they do and that is why the Suppans and Loopers of the world are not good enough. We desperately needed Parra to pitch well and when that didnt happen we were in big trouble.

We are lucky that the division and league are awful or we would be talking about who we would be selling off.

I cringe everytime Suppan goes out to the Mound , but what other Choice does the Brewers have since we have no prospects down at 3A.

I cringe every night Gallardo is not pitching because it means we are probably gonna have to score 6 or more runs to win.

The Brewers dont have nearly the offense that the Phillies have. They have Utley, Howard, Ibanez, Werth, Victorino and Rollins who is having a lousy year. Our lineup is not even remotely close to as good as that lineup.

First off, why are we comparing the phillies in regards to determining if we can make the playoffs? We can make the playoffs by winning the division or the wildcard so we are not going head to head with them. But to say that we are not remotely close to them is not correct. Take Utley and Howard against Braun and Fielder I guess and then JJ and Rollins are equally as bad this year. Then you have Werth and Vicorino to go against Hart and Cameron. I am not sure how this is "not remotely close" but add that to the fact that they play their games in one of the most hitter friendly parks and probably helps there stats a bit. This could be one big reason why Ibanez is having just a spectacular year at age 37. There offense has been just as shaky as anybodys this year so this comment just kind of caught my attention.

You do realize this is not really true, that our team outside of Gallardo does not have an ERA of 5. I mean venting is cool and all as long as you realize that is what you are doing. The rotation is cold right now, it sucks but it happens. Even if it were true most teams have an ERA over 4 so that would realy mean we need to score less than 1 run a game more than other teams.

True, their offense is better, but the Brewers' starters have been consistently better than Philly's starters this year, so they can probably afford to not score as much and still win more (and coming into today the Brewers did have the higher winning percentage and would be leading the NL East).

If the league and division is awful, it helps the Brewers in their goal of making the playoffs. I guess I'm having a hard time understanding how that's a bad thing...I'd gladly take another playoff appearance, even if it's in a perceived weak league.
