Gamel leading off is certainly a surprise, but with Counsell out of the lineup he's a better alternative than Hart against a righty. He's typically patient and getting him a chance for an extra AB today will probably be beneficial in the long run.

The second inning has been tough to watch so far, but I hesitate to get on Suppan too much considering he was carrying the rotation for awhile. Hopefully he can get out of this with only 2 (or less) runs scoring.

Gallardo and 4 number 5's. That is not good enough to make the playoffs. We cant even count on any of these guys to go more than 5 innings.
Suppan's gone at least 5 innings in 12 of his 15 starts, and hasn't had a sub-5 inning start since May 26. Looper's gone at least 5 innings in 13 of his 15 starts, with the only two sub-5 inning starts coming this month, and he's gone at least 6 innings in 10 of his 15 starts. McClung's not stretched out so it was probably unreasonable to think he could go more than 4 or 5 innings yesterday, and Burns didn't pitch too bad in his first career start. Teams like Philadelphia and New York are having a harder time finding good pitching and they're also in the playoff hunt. The pitching hasn't been good in June, true, but for the most part this year they've been a very solid group (as expected).

crewcrazy, do you honestly think this starting pitching is good enough to lead us to the playoffs? We should have traded for Vazquez last offseason. He is a legit 1/2 who pitches over 200 innings each year and he wouldnt have cost us Gamel or Escobar. The biggest problem with our starting staff is that they all have average to below average stuff other than Gallardo and Parra when he is right. Melvin should know better than to count on Suppan and Looper to lead us to the playoffs.

Yeah, I do. Like I said, there are teams also in the playoff hunt that have a lot of question marks in their rotation. As an example, Philadelphia is leading their division and they have one starter with an ERA under 4. The Brewers don't need to have the best pitching in the league to make the playoffs, just a serviceable staff which is what they're working with now. Am I opposed to an upgrade? Not at all...I'd like to see one as much as the next guy, but I don't think it'll be the end of the world if Melvin can't find a significant upgrade. As for Vazquez, he didn't exactly come cheap for the Braves -- they had to give up Tyler Flowers, another very good catching prospect of theirs that's posted a career .898 OPS in the minors, and a few other prospects. Vazquez was a 4-for-2 trade (Atlanta also got Boone Logan if I remember correctly), so he didn't exactly come at a small price for them.
