2009-06-27 Giants (Zito) at Milwaukee (McClung) : 6:05 PM CT [Brewers win, 7-6]

1)Trading/Signing a real #1/#2 quality pitcher which we explored and didn't find a deal(Vanquez would have been nice i agree).

2)Trading for a near major league level arm that we could sit in the minors and only bring up if someone gets hurt or struggles (something that never comes cheap).

Signing some marginal guy just doesn't make any sense when you already have 5 guys.

I agree.. there wasn't much more they could have done once CC turned them down. I don't get the TGJ argument either.. if his name was Bob Nelson he would have been treated like Chris Duffy. There where 3 things they could have did this off-season:

- Trade Hardy.. but they couldn't have gotten a Cain maybe someone like Sanchez.. maybe..

- Don't pick up Cameron's option and use that money and Looper money to go after a higher level pitcher or trade for someone in a salary dump. Of course the Hart would have to play CF and Gamel would have been in RF most likely.

I look at this season this way..

It is amazing we are right around first when:

- Hoffman was on the DL to start the season (cost us at least 2 wins early in the year)

- Kendall, Hart, Hall, Hardy means with the pitcher 5 spots in our opening day lineup were black holes.

- Our 2B who was on pace to have a great year is lost for the year.

- One of our young pitchers implodes.

- Our best prospect to help pitching at the beginning of the season is suspended for the year.

If they keep Gamel up and let him play everyday and bury Hall on the bench or DFA and Yo stays healthy I think they will be fine. Also remember the expectations at the beginning fo the year is this was a bridge year until some of the young pitchers could get closer.

Can someone describe Cameron's catch, I'm stuck at work. Thanks!
He timed his leap perfectly and brought the ball back from over the wall. Cory Provus' call is a must-listen in the post-game show or on Sportsbubbler. He's basically just yelling.

If that's not the top web gem of the night, I can only imagine what would be.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

well, there you go. Lead-off base hit, although if Billy makes the play, Coffey is still in there. Come on Mitchie the Kid!

Hall's momentum was taking him to foul territory even if Hall catches that he would have had to of made a good throw to get Renteria out at 1B.

I get that Ennder, but what about trading for Buchholz? You just mentioned Vazquez. There were options. There is nothing wrong with sending Parra down and having that depth. What are we going to do...hurt his feelings? The Bo Sox did it with Buchholz and now they are probably better off for it. Off-season trading could have been done to help this team. Move Dave bush, etc. I just don't think he did the best job he could have. Beating a dead horse, so barring a new point of view, I'll keep insisting on being wrong and be disgruntled about the 2009 roster that forces me to become emotionally invested all day in waiting for the Brewers game only watch Chris Smiths, Braden Loopers, Seth McClungs and Jeff Suppans go to battle for the playoffs http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
We might have had to give up Hardy and Hart for Bucholz.. now that may not look so bad but at the beginning of the season that would have been crucified. The Red Sox where as likely to trade Bucholz as we were Yo.. I agree about the mediocrity of the 2-5 pitchers but the issue is we need our hitters to start hitting. Those pitchers are what they are.. we spent our money this year on our offense (Hardy, Hart, Cameron, Fielder)

To be hones if I was GM at the beginning of the year I would have been talking basically with the twins on one of two trades:

1. Hardy for Slowey or Blackburn

or

2. Don't pick up Cameron's option and trade Fielder (He could DH) for Slowey or Blackburn and Denard Span and put Gamel at 1b. and then use the money left over to go after a 1/2

I wouldn't have done either of those two moves. Plus I doubt the Twins would have taken Fielder it is just not something they would do. The Twins would be interested in Hardy but I don't think you get Slowey or Blackburn for Hardy or at least I don't think the Twins would do that. A more reasonable trade would have been Hart for Jackson or Niemann.

Another thing to think about with the recent off season. The Brewers signed Looper and Hoffman now if you wanted two starting pitchers you don't sign Hoffman. Now you are back to where you started but this time the bullpen is the problem and not the starting pitchers.

first pitch. Augh. Nice inning, otherwise. Well, let's get 'em this frame and win it in the 9th!

I liked how the crowd got into it and then Cam took it all away by swinging at that first pitch. I'd rather have taken a pitch and at least let himself get settled in rather than adrenaline creeping in.
