Khris Davis is in the Helena line up tonight as the DH.
Wow, nice catch. I didn't even think he was signed yet.
I hadn't heard anything either until Steve Wendt was talking about him in the line up tonight.

Finally a very nice line from Rolando Pascual:

3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO (no wild pitches, no hit batters)

Hiram Burgos...not so nice a line is his pro debut:

2.1 IP, 9 H, 11 R (8 ER), 2 BB, 3 SO, 3 HR

Helena down 13-4 after 4. Garfield and Mike Roberts have gone deep for the Brewers.

Final: Chattanooga (Dodgers) 4, Huntsville 1

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Chick and Giles Lead Looks to Win

Huntsville Handcuffed Offensively in Final Game of Series

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Tommy Giles launched two home runs to support seven strong innings from Travis Chick in Chattanooga's 4-1 win over Huntsville in the last of a six-game set Saturday evening at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars took four out of six to begin the second half and are 42-33 overall, while the Lookouts are 32-43 overall. Chattanooga leads the season series 8-7, as the two teams have split ten games in Huntsville.

Giles belted his first home run of the night with two outs in the second inning to give the Looks a 1-0 lead against Josh Butler. It was the second time in the series that Giles took the Stars' right-hander deep in the second inning to give the visitors the early lead.

James Tomlin doubled with one out in the third, moved to third base on a Ramon Nivar single and scored to make it 2-0 on a base hit by Eddy Perez, who had been just one for 15 in the series before the single. Butler struck out Tomlin to end the fourth inning with runners at second and third and got Mike Rose to ground into an inning-ending double play to end the fifth. Butler suffered the loss after giving up two runs on five hits, while walking three and fanning five over five frames in the shortest of his three starts with Huntsville. Giles belted his second homer of the night, a two-out shot off of Mike McClendon in the sixth inning to push the visitors lead to 3-0. It was only the second long ball allowed by the Stars' right-hander in 49 innings of work.

Chick stranded a runner at third base in each of the first three frames and retired ten in a row before Chuck Caufield led off the seventh inning with his first triple of the season and scored on a J.R. Hopf groundball out. Chick closed his performance by striking out pinch-hitter Jonathan Lucroy with a runner at first to end the seventh. The right-hander gave up three hits, walked two and fanned six in his longest outing of the year to improve to 6-3.

Andrew Lambo drew a one-out walk in the eighth inning off of Casey Baron, moved to second base on a Giles bunt base hit, to third base on a Justin Sellers ground out and scored on a Hopf passed ball to make it 4-1. Victor Garate tossed a scoreless eighth inning and Matt Sartor retired the side in order in the ninth to end the game and earn his fifth save.

The Stars open a six-game series in Sevierville, TN Sunday afternoon with right-hander Donovan Hand starting for Huntsville against Tennessee right-hander Marcos Mateo. Coverage of the game begins at 3:45 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Brevard County Box Score

Manatees trailed 3-2 heading to the top of the 6th, but a messy inning that included a leadoff HBP by Lucas Luetge, a Brent Brewer error, a Roque Mercedes bases loaded wild pitch immediately followed by a Carlos Corporan passed ball, well, you get the picture, the game was lost there; only three of the eight Manatee runs allowed were earned; two more errors in the 9th, one by pitcher Brandon Rapoza, led to two unearned runs; Brewer may have been listed as the DH early on, according to a post above, but that was rectified in the box score; Chris Errecart handled DH duties and was productive; Logan Schafer singled and walked twice, would like to see that OBP (.337) closer to the .360 range; despite two walks, Lee Haydel's .303 OBP isn't cutting it either, even in the Florida State League's offensively-deprived atmosphere; Zelous Wheeler (.219) just 2-for-his-last-22...

And all that being said, along comes the game recap from the 'Tees front office --

Cardinals Fly Past Manatees, 8-3

(Viera, FL) Palm Beach dominated Brevard County Saturday night, blasting the Manatees, 8-3. The Manatees had an extremely rough day in the field and on the mound, with a total of four errors, three wild pitches, and two passed balls. Only three of the eight runs allowed by Brevard County were earned.

Lucas Luetge (4-5) was rocked for five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks. He also uncorked two wild pitches. Aaron Luna led the Cardinals' attack with a 3-5 day, including two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.

Richard Castillo (2-7) was wildly effective Saturday night, allowing two runs on three hits over six innings to earn the win. He walked five, but struck out nine. His only two runs allowed came on Chris Errecart's towering home run (4) to center field in the fourth inning.

The Manatees look to get back on track Sunday afternoon, and earn a series split. Mark Rogers (0-1, 1.54) gets the nod for Brevard County. He will take on Nick Additon (2-2, 3.18) of Palm Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM (12:05 Central).

Three hours and 56 minutes gametime with 22 minutes in delays -- Rattlers win 2-1 in 14 innings!

By the way, since the beginning of the season, the WNAM link provided by MiLB.com for Rattler audio has hosed my internet explorer browser consistently.

From now on, we'll provide a direct link in the Daily Menu to this better route to Chris Mehring's call:

Chris Dennis left the Rattlers game after falling awkwardly on his right foot trying to avoid a tag at the plate in the 8th inning.

Steve Braun left the same game in the 3rd inning after injuring himself in a rundown after a botched squeeze attempt.

Each player had to be helped off the field.

Final: Nashville 11, Oklahoma City (Rangers) 5

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Link for Brendan Katin congratulated by Angel Salome photo, text follows --

Sounds Blast RedHawks In Homestand Opener

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds belted three home runs en route to opening their homestand with an 11-5 victory over the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Saturday evening in front of 7,535 fans at historic Greer Stadium.

Every Sounds batter either recorded a hit, scored a run, or drove one in during the club's 15-hit attack.

Shortstop Alcides Escobar and catcher Angel Salome each turned in three-hit evenings while right fielder Brendan Katin and second baseman Hernan Iribarren both produced three RBIs on the night.

Oklahoma City jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Sounds starter Chase Wright in the top of the first inning. Julio Borbon led off the contest with a triple to right-center and scored the game's first run when Joaquin Arias followed with an RBI infield single.

The Sounds tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the second after loading the bags on three singles by Salome, Adam Heether, and Katin off RedHawks starter Bryan Corey. Erick Almonte followed with an RBI fielder's choice grounder.

Nashville pulled ahead 5-1 with a four-run third, highlighted by a three-run Katin homer to center off Corey, the slugger's team-leading 16th roundtripper of the year.

Iribarren increased the home team's lead to 8-1 in the fourth with a three-run homer of his own, a one-out shot to right off Corey. The blast, the infielder's second of the year, also plated Jason Bourgeois and Escobar.

AUDIO: Hernan Iribarren Home Run

Heether continued the Sounds' power surge in the fifth when the third baseman led off the frame with his sixth homer of the year. The blast to left off Corey made it a 9-1 game. Nashville upped the advantage to 11-1 later in the frame on a Cole Gillespie RBI triple followed by an Escobar run-scoring single.

Oklahoma City pulled within 11-3 in the sixth with a pair of runs off Sounds reliever Wes Littleton on Arias' two-run double down the left field line, then tacking on two runs in the ninth against Ryan Houston to bring the score to its final 11-5.

Wright (5-5) squared his record on the year and improved to 4-1 in his last nine starts by earning the victory for the Sounds. The southpaw allowed one run on four hits over five innings.

Corey (3-3) was saddled with the loss after being victimized for 11 runs on 13 hits in just 4 2/3 frames of action.

The teams continue the series with another 6:00 PM matchup on Sunday evening. Left-hander Manny Parra (0-1, 1.38) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma right-hander Luis Mendoza (2-2, 5.30).

Nashville Box Score

91 pitches through five innings for Chase Wright (four hits, four walks, two HBP's, but somehow only one run); Angel Salome OPS by month -- April .532, May .744, June .947; Alcides Escobar isn't moping, is he? Actually, who is on this squad? Kudos to Don Money and the players...

Both Peoria and Wisconsin had runners caught stealing home (on the front ends of double steals).

Cameron Garfield had a great game at the plate, going 3-3 with a walk and finishing just a triple short of the cycle, but he had a rough second inning defensively, though it didn't cost them a run:

Missoula Bottom 2nd

  • Alan Santiago reaches on fielding error by first baseman Hitaniel Arias.
  • David Nick singles on a ground ball to center fielder Michael Roberts. Alan Santiago to 3rd.
  • With David Narodowski batting, David Nick steals (1) 2nd base, Alan Santiago scores. Throwing error by catcher Cameron Garfield.
  • David Narodowski strikes out swinging. David Nick steals (2) 3rd base. David Nick scores. Throwing error by catcher Cameron Garfield.
  • Bobby Stone called out on strikes.
  • Ramon Castillo grounds out, shortstop Joshua Prince to first baseman Hitaniel Arias.

Garfield got the last laugh though; he stole a base of his own in the 7th.

Final: Wisconsin 2, Peoria (Cubs) 1, 14 innings

Wisconsin Game Summary:

RATTLERS GO THE DISTANCE TO GET ABOVE .500

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers outlasted the Peoria Chiefs 2-1 in a fourteen inning game at Time Warner Cable Field on Saturday night. The Rattlers did not have a hit over the final six innings, lost two players to injuries, sat through a pair of short rain delays, and took advantage of five Peoria errors to win their third straight game and move their overall record above .500 for the first time since April 24.

Neither team could score against the opponents starting pitcher. Cody Scarpetta struck out six over five scoreless innings for the Rattlers (37-36 overall, 3-0 second half). Peoria starter Chris Carpenter kept the Rattlers off the scoreboard for 4-1/3.

However, neither starter got a chance to go any deeper in the game. A hard rain shower of less than five minutes hit the stadium with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Earlier in the game, a brief downpour forced a four minute pause in the game without the need for the tarp. But, this time the umpires called for the tarp to be placed on the field. There was an 18 minute delay and neither starter came back after the game restarted.

The Chiefs (38-34, 0-3) got on the board first with a solo homer by Josh Vitters in the top of the sixth inning. Vitters, who has homered in two straight games in this series, hit his fifteenth home run of the season with one out off Efrain Nieves. Nieves and two other Wisconsin pitchers kept the Chiefs off the board for the rest of the game.

Chris Siegfried, who got the final two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning as the reliever for Carpenter, allowed a one out double to Brett Lawrie in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Dennis reached on an error that sent Lawrie to third. Brock Kjeldgaard was next and he sent a grounder to third. The throw to second got Dennis, but Kjeldgaard beat the relay to first to beat the double play and Lawrie scored the tying run.

Wisconsin had a great opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the arm of rightfielder Kyler Burke kept the game tied. Corey Kemp reached on a throwing error by pitcher Erik Hamren. But, Burke threw out Kemp as he tried to take third on the play. Later in the inning, Dennis tried to score from second on a two-out single to right by Jose Duran. Burke threw Dennis out at the plate for the final out of the inning.

Dennis was injured on the play. The throw from Burke was up the third base line and Dennis leapt to avoid the tag of catcher Michael Brenly. The tag was applied and Dennis landed awkwardly on his right leg and had to be helped off the field.

Dennis was the second Rattler who had to be carried off the field. In the third inning, Steve Braun was on third base and broke for the plate on an attempted suicide squeeze. However, the Chiefs pitched out on the play and Braun was caught in a rundown. He went down making a turn to the plate and needed assistance to get off the field.

The Chiefs had runners at first and third with no outs against Daniel Meadows in the top of the tenth inning and attempted a squeeze. The play did not work for the Chiefs as the batter missed the ball and the runner was easily tagged out between third and home.

The score stayed tied until the bottom of the fourteenth. That's when the Rattlers cashed in on some Peoria mistakes. Duran reached to start the frame on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Flaherty. One out later, Duran advanced to second on a wild pitch by Peoria reliever Manolin DeLeon.

DeLeon got the second out and Juan Sanchez stepped up to the plate. The Rattlers centerfielder swung at the first pitch and popped the ball up to short right. The game appeared to be headed to the fifteenth inning as second baseman Junior Lake settled underneath the ball.

But, Lake missed the ball. Duran crossed home with the winning run and the Rattlers are now 7-0 against the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs in 2009.

Nick Tyson, who extended his season scoreless streak to 15-1/3 innings with a 1-2-3 top of the fourteenth, picked up the victory.

The final game of the four game series is Sunday afternoon. Trey Watten (3-6, 3.78) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Peoria sends Aaron Shafer (5-4, 5.04) to the mound. Game time is 1:05 PM.

Sunday is the first Bark in the Park Event at Time Warner Cable Field. Dog owners may bring their canines to the game and watch the game from the left field grass seating.

Sunday is also Brewers Sunday with the players wearing Milwaukee Brewers-themed jerseys and caps. Players will be available for a post-game autograph session on Sunday, too.

Best game summary of the year from Chris, and that's saying something; pitching lines to behold, Rattler offensive box score lines not as empty as you might think -- enjoy perusing...
