Jeff Weaver wants 4 years and $40 Million...

According to ESPN Insider, the Mets are interested in Jeff Weaver.

The Mets only want to sign a pitcher to 1 or 2 year contracts (seeing most of the guys left are pretty questionable)

Jeff Weaver wants 4 years and $40 Million.

If Weaver gets that deal, then the Suppan deal looks really good.

I just hired an agent, had him contact 12 MLB teams, and let them know I'm interested in a one-year, $275,000 contract to play any position on the roster. My arm has limited mileage, and I have actually never struck out once at any level of pro ball.

Even if my chances are slim, obviously this is the offseason where my opportunity is greatest. I'm glad the Brewers don't have one of these clinically insane GMs. *insert jokes at melvin's expense after.... here*

No GM with any more than half a brain gives Weaver that kind of money. Maybe something super-incentive-laden that could max out at that level. But the guy has hardly pitched like he's worth that. In fact, his last contract was proportionally absurd for that guy's production. Unbelievable what that guy thinks of his own worth vs. his production.

I've been real interested to see what happens with him this year after his up and down season last year. I would think with the market being what it is, he'll get at least a 2 year and maybe a 3 year deal. My guess was $4-5 million/yr. with incentives and a option that vests based on stats. He is the prototypical guy that can make a GM a hero or get him fired depending on if he gets the contract he wants.

Agents don't always do what's best for players, that's for sure.

Considering the market, I don't know why guys like Jeff Weaver or Mark Mulder look for multi-year deals.

Jeff has all kinds of talent and looked like he might have been getting himself back on track at the end of last year. If he truly believes this, why would he lock himself into four years of pay at an average-pitcher price? It seems like these types of guys should shoot for one or two year incentive laden deals to try to 're-prove' themselves and cash in later.

Weaver should go with a one-year deal with St. Louis for $5-6 million (assuming he can get that from them) with a few million in incentives.

He can then work with a quality manager, pitching coach and team and get his crap together -- then get the big payday (which I think is all that matters to him) after the 2007 season.

All it takes is one idiot team, however, to give him a ton. Hopefully not - although, perhaps it would be good for some team to give him a bunch of money and have it cripple their finances/roster - and thus help Milwaukee. Sweet! St. Louis, give him his $10/year for 6 years!

If some team gives him that (4yrs/$40 million) it would easily be the worst contract of the offseason. He was 3-10 with a Mile High ERA and he didn't even pitch in Colorado. After the Angels cut him, he was LUCKY to find work in St. Louis!!!

Sure he had a few good starts late in the season but so did Wayne Franklin and Matt Kinney. No one paid them 4 yrs/$40 million!!!

Go Cards, please overpay!!! Although, Jockerty isn't an idiot. Minaya, isn't either......

MGL says the Cardinals target is $2 million per marginal win for free agents. That will probably need some adjustment considering this year's boom, but still...the Cards aren't the type of team to overpay. We still don't really have a 5th starter, yet WJ is showing no signs of panic. It can be frustrating at times, but I really really respect their business practice.

The difference between a pitcher who gets a 4 year 40 million dollar deal (Meche, Marquis) and a pitcher who has to wait until March to get a minor league deal and an invitation to big league camp is very very very small. Weaver is VERY close to being that guy who gets the minor league deal. It is no wonder he wants 4 years 40 million. That would be a GREAT deal for him. If it werent for the fact that the Cards made the playoffs last year he would be the minor league deal type (or Joel Pineiro at best).

To sum up, why does Weaver want to get locked in at average pitcher rates for 4 years? Because he is so very close to being so bad that he is out of baseball, that is why, and nowhere near being a 15 million dollar a year type pitcher. So the benefit of going for a one year deal at 5 million in hope of landing a bigger contract next year (bigger than 4 years/40million) is very small as it has almost no chance of happening for him, while the chances that he sucks and is out of baseball is much greater.

Can't blame him in this market. I don't think he'll get it though.

If I was Jeff Weaver, I'd take the best offer the Cardinals make and run back to STL. If that's only a one year deal, so be it. I would work with Dave Duncan again, and then hit the market again when the contract was up. Weaver had a fair amount of success after he got picked up by the Cardinals last year. If he can keep that going, he could be worthy of another big contract a year or two from now. He's not worthy of it now, IMO.

$10 for only being good in the playoffs? disgusting. He must have the same agent as Reggie Sanders. I'm just going to guess the Pirates pay up for Weaver, they haven't done anything yet and have some money to spend.

I think that we already know that Suppan was a bargain taking the Ted Lilly received near the exact same contract and also the way pitchers like Gil Meche are beign payed. But yeah, I dont think Weaver will get that kinda money. But in today market.... i geuss you cant be to sure.
