Does this team need another hitter?

Again what team are we going to outscore in the playoffs?

Acquiring just a SP or just a hitter would be folly, as they clearly need both. If they don't do both, whatever they spend on one or the other would be wasted as far as this year is concerned (unless of course they get someone with multiple years left on a contract).

As of today, the Brewers are 5th in scoring (essentially 4th since florida has scored two more runs in two more games played) 5th in team OPS and 5th in OBP in the national league according to espn stats. As much as hart and hardy have underperformed, the offense seems to be enough to win the division. I think the team needs to use all its resources for a quality starting pitcher.

While 5th in those categories would be fine if the starting pitching were near the top, they aren't, so they shouldn't be satisfied with a 5th best offense because that will take them nowhere. If they added a bat that improved them to the 2nd or 1st ranking in the NL, it would help this rotation immensely. Bottom line is they need more to get to where they want to go whether it's a bat or an arm.

We have the 4th most runs in the NL and the 3rd highest OPS. We are number two in HR, and 4th in OBP. In June we were number two in runs and OPS. While a bat would be nice it is most definitely not a must have. A starter is probably a must have right now.

It helps that Casey McGehee has stepped up and been a very good hitter so far this season. Since realistically Melvin probably won't be able to get both a starting pitcher and a superior position player (ie. not just a bench or backup guy) I would rather see another starting pitcher brought into the fold.
