one line, meaningless posts

Some of the threads are really being cluttered up with the above, making them really tough to get through. 90% of them are just total wastes, chat room type stuff. Isn't that against the rules? An example would be the stuff in the minor league link forum, which is Jim's quality links and a bunch of "Wow, Jim hit a fly ball to the warning track!" style posts.

What do you hope to gain from a post like this Al? We're following 2 1st round picks at Helena, it's going to be a little like an in game thread when that happens because everyone's focus is on one game. If we are that irritating, just click on our names, then click on block, and you never have to see anyone post but Mass Hass again.

I can't speak for the other forums, which I barely get a chance to visit in-season while "Link Reporting", but it takes about 30 seconds to read (and learn quite a bit) about our new rookie ballers in Wednesday's Link Report, and obviously we had a few highly motivated (and entertaining) posters who kept some of us on the edge of our seat for a while. It's unlikely things are going to morph much beyond that, and to be honest, you don't want to see just my posts there each night. You are the only one to comment specifically on the Link Report thus far.

That's just a blatantly poor description of what you were "forced" to deal with Wednesday evening in that thread.

I appreciate the "one line" posts in the link reports, and considering that viewing of the action is generally out of the question and following via audio isn't a universal option for everyone, I certainly wouldn't consider them to be meaningless. Very poor example. If you had instead cited the endless "I agree" posts from certain posters in the major league forum, I'd be more inclined to agree with you.

Oof.

I thought this was a place where Brewer fans could come and talk about the Brewers and there prospects? Maybe its just me but whats the problem with people being excited about our recent drafts? Where else would you advise people to talk about Cameron Garfields 5 for 5 pro debut our Josh Prince stealing 6 bases in one game?

To be honest this is the exact reason why I dont post on this forum hardly at all. I'll come here to read the link reports and about the draft picks but I refrain from participating in discussions for the most part because its not a friendly enviroment that is conducive to that type of thing. Theres far too many rules reguarding posts and an elitist type of mentality that runs between the people who have been here for a very long time. Posters are treated like stupid little kids and this thread is a prime example.

To be fair, every BF.net-worker response here has basically said that the lead posts's issue is a non-issue.

Al, your message cites one topic. To detect a pattern, we'd need to see several threads to examine as examples.

As far as one line posts go, a lot can be said in a simple sentence. That's not what Fan Forum Etiquette is getting at. What's being discouraged is a "constant stream of snarky one-liners." In other words, a one-sentence post providing useful information is absolutely fine.

Also, a smartass one-line comment here and there doesn't necessarily detract--some truly are funny. When they're all over the place, they tend to stop being funny.

What we're asking is that members use discretion. If the mods see an individual overdoing the Henny Youngman thing, we'll contact that member. If a member thinks another member is overdoing it, s/he can contact a mod about that person, and we'll take a look.

As far as messages that say nothing beyond "Ditto," "I agree," or "Good Post" go, mods tend to hide the post and move on. The effort it takes to hide those messages is about equal to the effort it took to post in the first place.

In the case of the example cited, the brief updates provided information that was useful. As Godspeed stated, following the audio was the only other viable option to obtain that information.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I wrote this in the latest IGT, but thought it would be relevant to this discussion, so I'm re-posting it here:

I do think the "post patrolling" has gotten a bit out of hand around here lately. Not just in the IGT, but in general on this forum. If people really think some of the "one liners" or off hand comments are bad here, I don't think they frequent too many message boards on the internet. I think there can be a certain level of leniency on this forum without things devolving into being like the JSOnline blog. I guess I think maybe people should just scroll past the posts they don't like without feeling to make a comment about how it's "out of line" or whatever. If it becomes a consistent problem, then it can and should be handled, but I don't think people should have to walk on egg shells in order to post around here, either.

I agree with Al's basic tenet here, I love the updates by battlekow, et.al, but as I usually just read these after the games are ended, would appreciate it f the updates were just edited in one or a few posts...it seems like a simple way to resolve it, and saves a lot of scrolling.

I think the moderation is fine. All you really have to do is put some thought into your posts and refrain from calling people names. I have to add that I like the fact that there is no longer a vent thread. To be honest, there are plenty of other forums to post at if you don't like the rules here.
