Sounds Drop Isotopes 8-3 In Extras

NASHVILLE-The Nashville Sounds beat the Albuquerque Isotopes 8-3 on Wednesday night at Isotopes Park after a five-run rally in the top of the 15th inning.

Nashville (42-31) improved to 5-2 in extra-inning play this season.

Catcher Angel Salome got the Sounds on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a solo shot to left field, his fourth homer of the season. After Adam Heether was hit by a Charlie Haeger pitch, Joe Koshansky hit a two-run homer to right field, extending the Sounds' lead to 3-0.

Koshansky continues to kill the ball on the road, belting 10 of his 13 home runs and 31 of his 40 RBIs away from Greer Stadium.

Sounds Starter Tim Dillard gave up his first hit of the game in the sixth inning to Albuquerque's Chin-lung Hu that scored Jason Repko and trimmed the Sounds lead to 3-1.

Sergio Garcia and Kenley Jansen began the bottom of the eighth with consecutive singles. After another RBI-single by Hu that brought the Isotopes within one run at 3-2, Dillard got Blake DeWitt to ground out to Koshansky to get out of the jam.

Ryan Houston came in to relieve Dillard in the next frame, but suffered his first blown save of the season. Jamie Hoffman led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to centerfield, moved to second on a groundout by Juan Gonzalez, and advanced to third on defensive indifference. Hoffman then came home on a base hit to right field by Jansen to tie the contest at 3.

Dillard threw eight innings, his longest outing this season, surrendering two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

The game remained tied at 3 until the Sounds came to bat in the top of the 14th inning. Koshansky began the frame by getting to second base on a fielding error by Repko, and advanced to third on a Brendan Katin sacrifice bunt. Making his Triple-A debut, pinch hitter Martin Maldonado then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Koshansky and put the Sounds back in front at 4-3.

Nashville then exploded for four more runs on Isotopes reliever Dwayne Pollok on four consecutive two-out hits, including a Hernan Iribarren triple and Salome double that extended the lead to 8-3.

Sounds right-hander John Axford (1-0) earned the win in his Sounds' debut, striking out two over two scoreless innings. Dave Johnson, R.J. Swindle, and Wes Littleton also combined to throw four scoreless innings in relief on the evening for Nashville.

Pollok (2-4) took the loss, allowing five unearned runs over two innings for the Isotopes.

Suspended Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez went 0-for-1 against Dillard in his second minor league appearance, walking in four pitches in his first at-bat in and grounding out to shortstop in his next before departing in the top of the fifth.

The Sounds and Isotopes continue with the third game of a four-game series at 8:05 PM CT on Thursday night at Isotopes Park. Southpaw Chris Cody (2-1, 1.69) takes the hill for Nashville against Albuquerque left-hander Scott Elbert (0-0, 0.00).

Nashville Box Score

No batter was forced to pull a big oh-fer -- heck, Jason Bourgeois and Angel Salome registered eight official at-bats; nice first AAA impression, John Axford...

David Weiser's starsboxscore.com

The streak goes on and it victimized David Welch tonight...... Four unearned runs in the 5th on three hits -- the key hit, a two-run double by Russ Mitchell....... James Tomlin led off the inning with a single to Freddy Parejo, then stole second. A fielding error on a fly ball to Parejo then opened the door giving the Lookouts a 5-0 lead....... That's now ten straight games with an error -- 21 errors in all. The Stars not that long ago had an eight-game streak. That's the longest streak since an 11-game, 18-error streak from May 17-28, 2005. The Stars went 2-9 during that one. The Stars are 3-7 on this one. Only goes to prove what we've knows all along about baseball -- pitching and defense win games..... Anyway, here's the tally that started in the second game of a double-header, June 15 vs. Jacksonville:

JOHNNY RABURN 4
TAYLOR GREEN 4
KEVIN MELILLO 3
MARK HOLLIMAN 2
SHANE JUSTIS 2
DREW ANDERSON 2
VINNY ROTTINO 2
CHUCKIE CAUFIELD 1
FREDDY PAREJO 1

It's a rather moot point when you consider the Stars won the first half title, but without all the errors, it certainly would have been less suspenseful.

The Stars put on a 9th inning rally, but came into the bottom half trailing, 8-1. The Stars loaded the bases with none out, then Kevin Melillo tripled deep to right on reliever J.D. Durbin's first pitch over the heart of the plate, clearing the bases. Chuck Caufield's grounder scored Melillo, but with the bases empty and one out, J.R. Hopf flied out on a 3-1 pitch and Parejo grounded out to 1st baseman Russ Mitchell on a 2-1 pitch to end the game.

Bobby Bramhall (3-4, 5.80) gets the call, Thursday, against who I had thought would be Scott Elbert...... Bramhall is having his best month with a 2-1, 4.35 record for June. He's thrown 61% of his pitches for strikes in June, which is marginally better than April or May. His toughest inning has been the 4th, with an 8.44 ERA, a ground out ratio of only 0.31, and 15 hits allowd in 10 2/3 innings........ Elbert was promoted to Albuquerque.

Nick Bucci got the win, going five innings, and gave up three hits in Helena's opening day win over Missoula, Tuesday. He struck out four and walked none as the Brewers won, aided by Cameron Garfield's 5-for-5 start, 10-5...... Eric Arnett, the Brewers' #1 pick this year, didn't fare as well Wednesday night. In an inning of relief, Arnett gave up two runs on a hit and two walks facing seven batters in Helena's 10-5 loss.

Yohannis Perez went hitless for the 8th time in nine games and is 2-for-25 since June 6. It's dropped his average which then was .306 to .271..... John Axford made his AAA debut for Nashville Wednesday, getting the win in relief in a 15-inning game vs. Albuquerque, where former Stars voice Robert Portnoy can still be heard.

Nobody seems to be noticing that Cole Gillespie's been hitting .297 in his last 10 games.
We figured you'd be along to point it out and you didn't disappoint. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I haven't mentioned anything about Salome's tear either... the performances of late have been self explanatory, we've noted the hits for both players daily.

Huntsville Game Summary:

PITCHER DOES IT ON THE HILL AND AT THE PLATE FOR LOOKS

Jesus Castillo worked eight impressive innings and chipped in with two run-scoring singles to lead Chattanooga past Huntsville 8-5 Wednesday night in the third of a six-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts won for the first time in the second half and improved to 31-41 overall, while the Stars dropped to 40-32 overall and 16-17 at home. The Looks have won seven of the twelve games between the teams, including four of seven in Huntsville.

Russ Mitchell doubled with two outs in the second, moved to third base on a Kevin Melillo fielding error and scored when Castillo dumped a single into left field to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. James Tomlin started the fifth with a single, stole second base and moved to third base when Freddy Parejo dropped Joseph Becker's line drive, allowing him to reach second base. Tony Abreu followed with a single to plate both runners to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Mike Rose walked with one out and both runners scored when Mitchell doubled down the left field line with two outs to extend the lead to five and knock Stars' starter David Welch out of the game. The southpaw suffered the loss after yielding five runs, one earned, on 10 hits and fell to 4-5.

Castillo had retired 10 in a row before Johnny Raburn led off the home sixth with a double and scored the Stars' first run on an Adam Stern groundout. Castillo then chipped in with a two-out, run-scoring hit in the seventh that preceded Tomlin's two-run single that pushed the Looks' lead to 8-1 against Josh Wahpepah. Tomlin finished with four hits to pace a 16-hit, while Mitchell added three and Castillo was one of four players to collect a pair of hits.

Stern and pinch-hitter Vinny Rottino started the ninth with singles against Castillo, who was then removed for J.D. Durbin, who walked Jonathan Lucroy to load the bases. Melillo cleared them with a triple and scored on a groundout but the rally ended there. Castillo authored his longest outing of the season, allowing five hits, walking one and fanning three. He improved to 4-5 and recorded 15 ground ball outs in the process.

The series continues Thursday night with southpaw Bobby Bramhall taking the hill against Lookouts' left-hander Alberto Bastardo. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
