What about Tavarez for Turnbow?

Tavarez is a solid, versatile reliever that could be the answer to the Brewers 8th innings. He's a proven player that could lend some stability to the bullpen. I'm not convinced that Turnbow is the answer as primary setup man.

Boston is looking for a closer & the salaries are pretty much a wash (except that Turnbow is signed thru '08 & Tavarez has an '08 option).

Obviously it doesn't solve the logjam in the bullpen or the OF, but it could open up possibilities of dishing an OF paired with a reliever for a piece of the puzzle.

For example:

Turnbow to Boston for Tavarez

Mench & Wise to the Giants for Correia and a nugget. Salary dump but get a solid 6th man.

CV (either one), Capellan, Clark, & cash to the Jays for Rios & Downs. Downs is someone the Brewers should look to acquire. He's a lefty reliever that does well against righties & lefties. He posted a 2.77 ERA (in about 65 relief innnings) & just over a 4 ERA in total. Who knows if that's enough for the Jays?

Jenkins & cash to the Padres for a prospect or two. If the Padres would do it, I'd include Aquino or Sarfate to nab Linebrink or Meredith.

Like many others, I feel that bullpen has issues that have yet to be resolved.

i really want to keep turnbow...he was amazing for a season and a half, and i think i'd rather just let him go for nothing (if he blows up again) than trade him for something run of the mill now...

if he matches his first half from last year, we could trad ehim for anything we want..

Kind of brings up an interesting point.

If Turnbow returns to form next year into July, do we then shop Cordero rather than extending him? How much would you need to see from Turnbow to feel comfortable handing him the closer job back.

Personally, I think Cordero is one of the top 5 closers in the league and would like to resign him either way, though I really like Turnbow as well. I'd like to keep both of them; they could become one of the best 8th-9th combos in the game.

If...if...if... You could say that for most players in the league. If he also pitches like he did, he sends us out of contention when Yost sticks him out there.

I agree with the if on players.

IF Jenkins played a whole season we would contend

IF Bill Hall can match last years stats he is an all star.

IF Rollie Fingers would have pitched in the world series we woudl have won it.

we're not talking about allen simpson here...derrick turnbow was the team's best pitcher in 2005 and an all star last year...

baseball is not an exact science...but i think its just too early to give up on turnbow...besides, if he's only used in mopup in april, we'll find out if he's back or not...

you guys seem very quick to completely dismiss the guy...

i think maybe he's referring to the alexis rios trade proposed in the first message

Yep. I'd love to have Rios, but I think that we'd have to give up more than CV, Capellan, and Clark to get him, and that still leaves us with a Jenkins/Mench too many in the OF.

I don't want Turnbow ruining another evening watching Brewer baseball much less another season.

I don't think he'll ever return to his brief successful form. Hitters have caught on to him. Just take pitches. He's likely to get behind in the count and groove one or walk you. Sure he'll strikeout a few, but 2 K's, 2BB's, one extra base hit, bye bye ballgame.

No they didn't

Turnbow completely lost command of his slider. He became a one pitch pitcher and big league hitters can hit almost anyone's fastball if that's the only pitch that can be thrown over the plate.

The same thing happened to Brad Lidge, just to a lesser degree.Lidge had trouble commanding his slider, suddenly hitters were ripping his 97mph fastball all over the field because it was the only pitch he could throw for a strike.

Lidge is better than Turnbow, but hitters don't "figure out" guys that throw 97 and have a biting slider. If Turnbow can find a way to get his slider over like he did for over a year,he'll be fine.If not,he's toast.

agree 100%. hitters can't figure out the type of stuff Turnbow had for a year and a half. his slider left him. if he can throw it where he means to, he can get hitters out. he used to paint the outside corner with his fastball and just let the slider fall off the table low and away. he couldn't do that second half last season.

However, with Tavarez there is the opportunity for a bench-clearing brawl, something I desperately want to see the Brewers involved in. Would Prince Fielder eat someone? What would the bullpen do? Would Sheets suddenly be painted like Gibson in Braveheart running around the field? This is something I think we all need to experience in our lifetime.
