Ben Sheets

That bridge is not only burned, it's completely incinerated, to the point that it's hard to even recall that a bridge ever existed in the first place. Ben Sheets will not be a Brewer ever again.

Bennie, is that you?

Do we have any actual evidence that the bridges are burned as bad as people seem to think?

The biggest evidence would be that he turned down a guaranteed $10+mil in arbitration with a shoulder that didn't pass a physical. Either he really didn't know that he wasn't healthy (which was a huge mistake on the part of he and his agent), or he hated the thought of playing for the Brewers so much that he was willing to give up all that money.

I used to think the bridge burning thing was basically gossip, but my opinion had to change with the results of the offseason.

Yeah, the offseason definitely was an odd series of twists and turns with DM and Sheets. But I did hear Melvin say on 1250 yesterday that he and Casey Close remained close (sorry), and still talked quite a bit. He basically just said that Ben has not indicated he is ready to come back in 2009 and that he had no idea how his training was going.

If his shoulder injury was known to be that severe the Brewers would never have offered arby. The fact is that is another black mark against the Brewers training staff that they so greatly missed the extent of the injury.

Yeah, but they had to offer arbitration to hopefully get any compensation picks anyway.

What if he accepted though? The Brewers would've been screwed this year. It's pretty clear (IMO) that at least one of the parties didn't know about the injury.

I didn't feel this warranted a new thread, but I came across this update, which was actually available on July 3rd:

News: Jayson Stark of ESPN.com is reporting that Sheets (elbow) will not be physically able to pitch in the big leagues this season.

Spin: Stark noted that Jason Jennings underwent the same flexor tendon surgery in August of 2007 and wasn't able to return for a year and a half. Sheets' procedure was performed in February. Three teams have shown interest in Sheets, and he could possibly sign on later this year with a club he could help next season.

Its really too bad we burned our bridges with him. I'm as guilty as anyone for being frustrated with his injuries. But as often as he was hurt, you really can't knock the success. He'd be a great addition to the rotation for next year and help bridge the gap until any of our prospects are ready.
