Brewers Inquire Baltimore About Rodrigo Lopez (now a Rockie)

Mass Haas

Though the acquisition of Jaret Wright gives the Orioles six starters along with Erik Bedard, Daniel Cabrera , Adam Loewen, Kris Benson and Rodrigo Lopez, the Orioles will likely trade Lopez (the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers have inquired) or use him in the bullpen.

Stats:

Arby-eligible, made 3.75 M in 2006.

If the brewers do intend to move Hall to the outfield, they need to get rid of Mench and Jenkins. Lopez had some pretty good seasons and is coming off a horrible year. If we did pick him up, Im sure Maddux could figure him out and he would probably bounce back. If there is one thing that Melvin is good at, it has been finding cheap pitching.

Why do they need to get rid of both?

Hart/Hall/Jenkins

Gross/Clark on the bench.

And yeah I seriously hope we don't trade for him. Hell let's just let one of our guys from the minors come up and pitch if we want a pitcher with an ERA of 6.

I think he's an interesting guy, he was supposed to have great stuff and has shown flashes of pitching very well but hasn't shown consistant production. He's one of those guys I could see turning into a good MR or something. As a pure salary dump type move he'd make sense to take a shot on, Jenkins, Mench, Clark type guys.

Let's hold off on slamming Lopez. Dave Bush was 5-11 in 2005, and gave up 20 HR in only 136 IP. There's more to the game than stats, and we need to especially remember that Lopez has played more baseball than just 2006.

His career stats:

60 Wins, 61 Losses

WHIP - 1.413

ERA - 4.83

Keep in mind he's pitched his entire career in the AL, where ERAs are always higher. This is the kind of signing that will help to fill out our rotation. Lopez was slotted as the Oriole's 2006 Opening Day starter. He'll only have to prove capable of handling the #4 or 5 role, and as already pointed out, could slide to the Pen once both Villanueva and Gallardo are ready to roll.

Lopez will be very affordable, has a durable arm, and can capably fill out our 5-man rotation. If he sucks, call up Gallardo.

Here's the thing. Lopez is a free agent after the year and is coming off two bad years. I would only trade Mench for him.

Here's the thing between Bush and Lopez. Bush is young and still has potential, Lopez is 30 and we would have to pay him over $3 million in arbitration. Why are the Brewers setting their sights on Lopez, Pierre, Roberts etc? Get something the team needs for God sakes.

Lopez's FIP (4.73 career) isn't very good either. Last two years it was 4.81 and 4.96.

If we didn't have 3 young pitchers who seem to be about ready for a starting spot and a potential stud in Gallardo not far behind, then maybe he could fill out our fifth spot.

I vote no.

Edit - I am not impressed with the numbers you posted earlier either. I dont see how Lopez would be an upgrade over ANY of the options we have for the rotation right now.

I hate to say it but I would be more willing to give Hendrickson another shot before this Lopez guy.

But its just one mans opinion. If he came in and was lights out, I could find a way to like him http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Not sure I follow, aracko, I defended the notion of Lopez as an affordable, durable, back-of-the-rotation guy who could eventually go to the pen. Judging from Bush's stats in 2005, he would never have been capable of putting up the strong season he did in 2006.

Lopez has had very successful years, and ignoring those to focus on last year's struggles (on a team that finished 70-92) does not accomplish much, to me. If we're building our rotation around Lopez, I agree, bad idea. But we're not, we're looking for someone proven to be both reliable and affordable - not spectacular. If Lopez costs $3-5 mil for next year, I think it's a great one-year deal. Like I said, if he sucks, give Gallardo a shot.

He's an interesting person to ask about. Heck, he'd be more tradeable than Jenkins or Mench, so we could actually acquire him just to deal him.

As for why JEnkins AND Mench would need to be moved, it's because nearly every indication is that they view Hall as a LF, not a CF

I wouldn't get my undies in a bunch just yet. What we know is that the Brewers inquired. No one said they made a huge offer to acquire him.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Judging from Bush's stats in 2005, he would never have been capable of putting up the strong season he did in 2006.

While Bush did take a step foward this year, he actually had some decent numbers the two seasons prior.

And even in Lopez's good years when he had ERA's of 3.57 and 3.59, he had high LOB% and low BABIP's. His FIP's were 4.36 and 4.37.

With that said, I hope if he were to be brought in he would have to compete with Villanueva, Jackson, and Eveland for that 5th spot. If he loses out, he could be an effective relief pitcher as he holds a 2.95 ERA in 61 IP over his career out of the pen, which is encouraging.

Man alive, some of the names being thrown around that are associated with the Brewers this offseason are downright terrifying.

Yeah I'd rather just stand pat if these are the guys we're going to be going after.

No kidding. Unless the Brewers have some info from their pro scouts that lead them to believe Mike Maddux can work wonders with Lopez, I don't see why they would even conisder the guy.

Unless he would come in return for Jenkins in a payroll swap, which then I may be able to understand.

And Lopez being the O's opening day starter a year or two ago really means nothing. Rafael Roque was the Brewers opening day starter once upon a time...
