Dbacks idea - 2 birds, 1 stone?

There's something about this trade that just strikes me as happening over the all-star break. I just don't buy that the D-Backs are going to hold out for much for both of these guys. If they keep them, the D-Backs will be forced to offer them arby in hopes of getting picks for them and I just don't think they want to risk having to pay both these guys coming off a terrible season. (They are under contract for a combined $13 million plus next year this year). When San Diego dispatched Randy Wolf (who strikes me as similar to Davis) to Houston last year, the Astros only gave up Chad Reineke to get him.

If it only costs a guy who's in the 10-15 prospect ranger, I say pull the trigger. It would settle the rotation situation a little bit, and give us some dept and give us a legit leadoff hitter with an OBS well above .300 would could leadoff against LHP and RHP.

If I'm Melvin, I don't do it if they want a top prospect, but I don't think the D-Backs have much leverage here.

Well now the Brewers have the space to add Lopez if they can make this deal happen.

Lopez is a dog... A lazy player... He has been the talk of sports radio in the Phoenix area in regards of whom they NEED to get rid of first! Mark Reynolds said as much recently when he "called out some teammates for their lazy play"...

Think about it... Lopez is hitting .300 while batting leadoff and playing a position where Arizona has no depth... He is on a 1 year deal and Arizona is not even considering offering him any sort of deal for next year...

I would not touch him!

Yet he's still hitting .300 with a .363 on base, and would provide the Brewers with an everyday second baseman. Everything you cited sounds like a perfect player to buy low on.

All of this was the same reputation he had with the Nats, and when the Cards picked him up last year he had an OPS of +.950 the rest of the way. I heard Sutton on the Dlist a few months back and Albert Puljos told Sutton that he likes Lopez and he's looking out for him. Now, that's just one guy but I'll take Puljos' opinion over a bunch of radio yakkers looking for someone to blame the D'Backs cruddy season on. I don't want the top prospects traded for him, but if the deal is right, I'd gladdly welcome him to the team

I would think going to a contender may fix some of his lazy habits. Plus, if he's hitting .300 now, I wonder how some motivation, like winning, will help him? I'm not worried about the Brewers signing him after this year as they have Weeks and McGehee. They would just need a half season of his current production, or better, to shore up the lead off spot and 2nd base. If he's a type B free agent after the season, they also get a draft pick.

Lopez is just a guy. He's a mid 750 OPS at best 2B with average defense. That isn't an upgrade. I don't see the attraction.
I'm concerned that McGahee and Counsel can't sustain where they are at and will end up being less than Lopez in the second half. If it doesn't take much, I'd like to have him.
