Brewers still in the Lieber Sweepstakes?

www.boston.com/sports/bas...er/?page=5

This article from the Boston Globe mentions the Brewers, Rangers and Padres still showing interest in the Phillies veteran pitcher. If this rumor is true and the Brewers do acquire Lieber for say...the Phillies desired setup man & Mench(?) does that mean that Vargas becomes the long-man out of the pen?

A 1-5 Rotation of:

Sheets

Capuano

Suppan

Bush

Lieber

would be awesome!

Has anyone else heard this rumor surface recently?

Jason

The SOUP is ON!

That would give the Brewers the best #1-8 starting pitching since 1982 or 1983 if not ever. My memory for back-of-rotation guys ends at 1989 or so.

It's hard not to be excited already for a team that should win more than it loses. But I'm not sold on the Brewers doing more than competing in September at this point.

I wonder what Melvin is able to turn Mench/Jenkins/Clark/Turnbow into... Lieber or another proven starting pitcher would be nice. So would solid relief pitching or a great middle-infield or 3B prospect -- one who is certain to be able to play defense.

When does Melvin and family return from Italy?

That would be the deepest rotation in the league, no doubt. The Brewers would be in the enviable position of being able to withstand 2-3 rotation injuries, which is a good thing because that always happens to the Brewers.

Lieber for Mench/Turnbow would add around $1.5 mil to the payroll, which might not be possible as Melvin (or maybe Attanasio?) has already said that they are way over budget. The only way this gets done is if the Philles send some cash back with Lieber, IMO. Still definitely an interesting idea.

Personally, I say you can't have enough starting pitching. I doubt it would happen, but I wouldn't mind it at all.

The other positive is that if players are healthy, you have a superior trading chip at the deadline in Lieber or whomever you elect to trade. It let's you address your own weaknesses - or get a prospect or two.

That's assuming the Crew is happy with Vargas in the pen, because I doubt they'd get Lieber to be a reliever. Or switch someone like Bush there.

Ultimately, I think Lieber could help the team more than Mench/TBow.

Perhaps it's part of something bigger. Rowand?

Oh joy. This will give me weeks of stuff to think about when I am bored at work.

If that happend then I would reiterate what I have been saying for a few weeks now, that the Brewers contemplate moving a pitcher for a CFer.

Pull of the Lieber deal, then dump Jenkins contract. Then ship Cappuono or Bush to the Mets for Millege and a prospect. (obviousally Pelfrey would be out of the question, but what about Maine, or Heilman)

I think the Globe is just mentioning us because of our interest a month ago:

The Rangers, Padres, and Brewers are three teams that have kicked the tires on Phillies veteran righty Jon Lieber.

Yeah, we expressed interest at some point, but the article doesn't say how recently it was. I think it's still from the rumors at the Winter Meetings, but that's just IMO.

1. Where did Doug say "way over budget"? This has been mentioned a few times, and I've never seen this quote other than here.

2. As for the OF, I would have to think a Lieber/Jenkins combo would yield an upgrade in Jenkins' corner OF spot (not sure if that's LF or RF). And I'd hardly call the OF a mess, as at the moment, we have too many decent, if unspectacular, options. This is the deepest Brewers' team ever, with solid reserves everywhere (except possibly 1B).

I find it humorous that "Jon Lieber" and "sweepstakes" can be uttered in the same sentence.

It's not that hard, really. For example: I just saw in a commercial that Jon Lieber has won the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes!

On a serious note, not that much a fan of Mr. Lieber, as I really don't see the need for yet another starter.

I don't think it'd be that far-fetched to believe we can still afford to add him if we subtract even a Brady Clark and Turnbow. Baseball is awash with cash right now. And, as many have said, we would have the deepest rotation we've ever boasted. Capellan would begin to call his time at Miller Park, "Siesta Tiempo." And all would be good. CV-squared fighting it out for the long releiver role. Ned giving Ben the Clemens treatment and not allowing him to long toss until the break. I'm all for the acquisition still. You can never have enough quality pitching...especially when it's healthy quality pitching. Yes, we're looking at you there, Cubby-ville and your hording of a certain Brewer killer named Wade Miller.

It would only make sense to me if they sent Mench and Turnbow (addition by subtraction) for Lieber, then turned around and dealt Capuano to the Blue Jays for Alex Rios.

That would work out salary wise too.

They need offense, offense and more offense.

Lieber would be fine in the Rick Helling role. No way I put him ahead of Villanueva to start.

If I were to trade from the depth of pitching the Crew has, Cappy is the last one I would deal (this year).

And it seems to me Lieber would be acquired only to further bolster that depth for the season, not for trades. I appreciate the idea of striking while the iron is hot, Melvin could probably swindle (the desperate and spurned) Toronto in this market.

Last week I went over to Bluejayway.ca to get their thoughts about Rios and his value. I propsed Capuono for him and they laughed it off as a dellusional Brewers fan.

They wanted Capuono and Hall for Rios, Jason Frasor, Romero.

Talk about dellusional!
