At this point doesnt Pedro Martinez make the most sense?

Sign him to a year deal, prorated for the 5 million he wants with a mutual option/opt out for another 5 million for next year. We have to give up NO prospects and he would be at least as good as the tier of pitchers available after the hurt trio of Bedard/Peavy/Halladay and Cliff Lee. In other words I dont see him as any worse than Jarrod Washburn.

He just seems to make the most sense right now especially after the news that Gamel and Escobar and untouchable.

i'm also not sure why no one sees him as a starting pitcher any longer...

I haven't heard any reports on Pedro, but he's old & trying to work back from injury. Unless he's been setting the world on fire in bullpen sessions, I really have no idea why his name keeps coming up. If he's even a shell of his former self & able to start, he'd have his pick of teams with which to sign.

McClung was better last year, and McClung is clearly a better now than he was at this time last year. If the Brewers really wanted to keep Seth in the pen, I'd rather give Chris Cody the shot he's earned instead of spending money on Martinez. Parra could also become a viable candidate again.

Martinez was bad last year, he had a 5.61 ERA. Why would we want that? What makes him suddenly significantly better than that?

Is there any chance of Cappy coming back at the tail end of this year? Wasn't he going to begin throwin in July or am I mistaken?
I doubt he'll even be pitching in the minors until the end of July at the earliest, because he had a setback. I highly doubt he'll be stretched out enough, or even close to ready by the end of the season. He will probably just stay in the minors. Capuano can't be an option for us in a pennant race when he hasn't pitched in over a year. 0% chance we see him on the major league roster this year.

rangers, brewers and cardinals joined rays, angels and yankees at pedro workout today. ownership sit. hurts cubs' chances

I would imagine it is just the Brewers doing their due diligence. For what he wants and what he can offer I dont think he is worth the money.

Some people were saying that Gallardo would not pitch again last year. Cap will be following a somewhat similar schedule. He's going to be facing a tougher road, and he won't likely provide much help, but it's far too early to be writing him off completely.

Re Pedro: it will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes from the session. I think he may get signed, but I would be surprised if it was with the Brewers.

Well, Gallardo's comeback last season was pretty much unprecendented. Hoping for the same type of thing to happen two years in a row is probably being a bit over-reaching at this point. Everything reported on Capuano so far this season has seemed to be pretty pessimistic. Capuano is probably just hoping to make it back to the majors at some point in the future, let alone pitch this year.

As far as Pedro, it's been reported that the Yankees won't be pursuing him, and the Cubs probably won't either because of their transitioning ownership situation, so it seems like the potential suitors for him are falling away.

I'm a firm believer in going after premium guys in trade, and letting the farm system fill in the rest where possible. With the spate of injuries there seems to be a shortage of premium starting pitchers, so if Pedro looks like he can at least give you a sub 5 ERA you're probably better off signing him and holding your prospects for something else. Then your back up plan in case of injury is Parra, followed by Mclung/Cody. You might even look around and see if there is a premium bat that might be added to one of the weaker line-up spots.

An knee and an elbow are light years apart in the amount of healing and rehab needed to pitch again.

This would be relevant if their injuries occurred at exactly the same time. Since they didn't, this doesn't really seem to apply.

Hoping for the same type of thing to happen two years in a row is probably being a bit over-reaching at this point.

To each their own. I personally think hope is wonderful. I don't know if anybody expects Cap to come back and save the team, but it would be cool if he could work hard and make an appearance in September and be a productive member of the 2010 Brewers. If there was no chance of him coming back this year, I doubt he would be working with that as his goal.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

"He might have worked out at a different time," said Brewers GM Doug Melvin. "We don't know that. All I know from our people is he wasn't' there when we were told to be. ... I don't know what the demands are, but it doesn't matter what they are. If you can't watch him throw, it doesn't matter what his demands are. Would you go put an offer on a house without looking at the house?"
