Proposed trade (jenks)

aracko

First I want to start this off by saying I would prefer to see Jenks as a Brewer this year. Let me also say that I predict a MAJOR breakout season for Gabe Gross if given ample opportunity.

Anyhow - I think that a logical destination for Jenkins and is WASHINGTON. In Return I would ask for Ryan Wagner (the Nats have alot of Bullpen arms) whos upside I think is off the charts and is just 24 years old and one of their prospects - preferring Collin Balester who for whatever reason reminds me of a young Ben Sheets. Fastball(92-95)/big curve and working on developing a changeup.

Tony Graffanino/Craig Counsell would seem to be a perfect fit for Washinton as well. I like the depth they provide, but to me thats a easy deal to dump Jenks salary and pick up a couple young pitchers in return.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the deal? Clearly the NATS need a corner OF and middle of the order bat.

Middle of the NATS order would be much better. I would project their lineup as :

1. (ss) Fillipe Lopez

2. (2b) Counsell or Graffy

3. (1b) Nick Johnson L

4. (3b)Ryan Zimmerman R

5. (rf) Geoff Jenkins L

6. (cf) Austin Kearns R

7. (lf) Ryan Church

8. © Schneider

I disagree Jack. I dont even think Wagner is a lock to make the team. The BP is one of the few areas of strength for Washington.

Washington needs to show some improvement this season with the new park opening next season, and adding one or 2 veterans to the lineup would do wonders for the team.

I'm hard pressed to see what kind of player we can get in return for Jenkins. For 10 days during the year Jenkins is arguably the hottest hitter in baseball. The only problem is you sometimes have to wait until August to get that production. I've heard Cubs fans whine about how ARAM had the most meaningless 30 HR 100 RBI season in history. I liken Jenkins to Ramirez. His overall numbers belie the fact that he isn't a clutch hitter, his big hits come in blow out games, and he will go through month long droughts of power and average. I like Jenkins, I just don't see how a GM would willingly part with a quality player, let alone a quality arm for him. We've given him all the time he needs to mature, it's time for us to cut our ties. I think Washington can do lots better than adding him to their roster...on a year in and year out basis, Jenkins costs more games than he wins.

Geoff Jenkins is Wes Helms.

If you can keep him on the bench and only play him when injuries are happening and pinch hit him selectively he could be a very useful player like Helms was in Florida last year. Watch Helm's numbers drop this year now that he is full time.

At Jenkins current salary who is going to want him? Maybe at the trade deadline if we are out of it someone who can afford the salary for the rest of the year trades for him to pinch hit. Otherwise we pay most of his salary so he can be the 24th or 25th guy somewhere and get a washed up player in return or a high risk prospect.

The more I think of it, the more I want Jenkins in this lineup for his contract year. Even this offseason, Jenkins was still considered a Type A player. I doubt we'll be able to trade him for anything better than his production for this season plus the two draft picks we'll hopefully get at the end of the year.

Then again who's going to give up a pick to sign Jenkins and what's the chance that he'd accept arbitration with us? I guess that all depends on how well he plays this year.

Jenkins was a type A player in whose mind? We heard Jenks being mentioned in a scad of trades, but what we were offered wasn't worthy of an "A" list player. Flat out, Jenkins is NOT a top tier corner outfielder. He's not even worth 7.5 mill, which is a bargain based on the off season free agent signings. Your point about taking advantage of a contract year might have some merit though.

Having grown up a Brewers fan first and Reds fan second (family around the Cincy area), I followed Wagner since he was drafted by the Reds. As much hype as he got when he first came in the league as a lights out pitcher and then faded into no man's land, I don't really see how he is much better than some of our other options, like Sarfate. I guess if you really want to dump Jenkins and his salary, it's not bad. I just don't see the Nats really wanting to make that move.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau who determines free agent compensation every year. I was making a point about what we could get back for him by offering him arbitration at the end of the year...

USA Today's report on this offseason's rankings

Quote:
12 Geoff Jenkins 80.556 A

So basically, you just reiterated my point that we won't get as much for him in a trade as we will by keeping him the whole year and taking our draft picks...

I guess in an ideal world - I would like to get a Bullpen arm to battle in Spring with our other options (if Wagner didnt make the team or wasnt lights out you cut or trade him right?) and a very nice minor league prospect who is AA ready. I dont see why Jenks cant bring in something like that. If Wagner didnt make the team at least you still have that high quality arm in your system.

I guess others dont agree that Jenks could bring what I suggest or that it would be worth it, but that is my thinking anyhow.

The team can decline Geoff's option, allowing him to declare free agency. If Geoff declares, which he certainly would, the team can then offer arby and become eligible for picks.

Of course, Jenkins could also accept arby and the Brewers would have him for another year. With any kind of decent 2007 season at all, it's conceivable that his arby price could exceed his option price.

There are some big flaws in trading Counsell. First, a trade before June 15th requires his approval. Second, any trade makes the option year in his contract automatically become guaranteed.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Regardless of draft picks, I'd still prefer to see Jenkins with the team in 2007, for two reasons:

1. It's a contract year, and he's got a fire lit under him. He's going to produce. Mark my words.

2. The Crew's actually gonna contend this year, and it would be nice to see Jenkins with the team when they finally make the playoffs again. (Unless, of course, that happens in 2016.)

Jenkins is a very good lefty complement to the Regal One's southpaw stance. As I've said before, it would seem the most logical trade choice would be our former QB, not the gent who bears a striking resemblance to a current QB.
