Washington Needs Pitching

RobertR

They have all of one established starter in John Patterson and then a bunch of retreads.

Here's a question, would you do Zach Jackson and Derrick Turnbow for Chad Cordero?

Does Ben Hendrickson have any trade value?

I would do that deal in a heartbeat. I like Jackson, but I get the feeling he's going to be the odd man out behind Villanueva and Gallardo. As far as Turnbow goes, Cordero would fill his role with probably better results. The better question is whether Washington does this. Would Ryan Wagner be the closer if Cordero was traded?

When Washington and Boston was talking about a deal for Cordero Washington wanted 3 high ceiling pitchers. The rumor was that they asked for Craig Hansen, Jon Lester, plus another lower level high ceiling pitcher.

No way does Turnbow and Jackson get it done. If you offered Gallardo and Jackson, that might be enough for them, but I doubt any of the people on this board would do that.

I feel so uncomfortable giving up cheap, young starting pitching (ZachJack, etc.), especially given that we have them under contract control for years to come.

If we needed a starter, or could land a slugger by doing so, ok sure. But not in the Pen. Just look at Shouse as example 1 that you don't need to get some big name to have success out of a reliever.

That being said, we do still need (at least) another LOOGY/LHRP, as I continue to beat this point into the ground.....

ZachJack, Inman and a guy like Hammond would likely get it done.

Not sure what Cordero's contract status is but if you could tie him up for 3 more years it would be worth it. If it's less than 3 years we'd need to be in the thick of the pennant race at the deadline to do it. Then if Turnbow can turn it around we would suddenly have a very good bullpen.

I'd most like to see Wise get a shot at closing. Nevertheless, with Washington's dearth of starting pitching and our plethora of young, cheap starters and the added bonus of our depth in the outfield, we should be able to find a happy median.
