Sounds Sweep Redbirds With 14-5 Win

NASHVILLE-The Nashville Sounds pounded the Memphis Redbirds 14-5 in the series finale on Sunday night at Historic Greer Stadium, the most scored by the Sounds this season.

Nashville's (38-26) seventh straight win gives the Sounds their second series sweep of the season after previously sweeping New Orleans from April 17-20 at Zephyr Field.

Cole Gillespie's grand slam and Angel Salome's three doubles led the charge for Nashville, each knocking home four RBIs on the evening. Jason Bourgeois went 4-for-6 with three runs scored.

Joe Koshansky was hit by a pitch by Memphis starting pitcher Katsuhiko Maekawa to start the bottom of the second inning and scored on an infield fielding error by second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir for a 1-0 Sounds lead.

Brendan Katin singled to begin fourth, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on another error by Hoffpauir attempting to throw out Koshansky at first base. Koshansky then moved to second on a stolen base, went to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch, making the score 3-0.

Bourgeois extended his season-high hitting streak to eight games on an infield single and scored on the next pitch with Alcides Escobar tripling to left field. Escobar then scored on a double to deep center by Salome, extending the Sounds' lead to 5-0.

Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Gillepsie hit a grand slam off Memphis' Ian Ostlund off the guitar scoreboard in left field, his fourth of the year. The last grand slam hit by a Sounds player came August 16, 2008 at Round Rock by Adam Heether.

The Sounds loaded the bases again in the fifth inning off Ostlund with three consecutive singles by Mike Burns, Bourgeois, and Escobar. Salome tacked on his second double in the inning, clearing the bases and putting the Sounds in front at 12-0.

The nine runs by Nashville in the fifth inning were the most scored this season and most since August 28, 2006 at Albuquerque.

Nashville scored two more in the bottom of the seventh and extended the lead to 14-0 on a Katin double down the left field line, scoring Bourgeois and Salome.

The Redbirds got on the board in the top of the eighth with a three-run home run to left field by pinch hitter Casey Rowlett, his first Triple-A home run of his career. Hoffpauir added his eighth homer of the season later in the inning, a two run shot that trimmed the Sounds' lead to 14-5.

Mike Burns (7-2) earned the win, allowing three hits and fanning four over seven scoreless innings. Eight of Burns' eleven outings this season have been quality starts.

Maekawa (1-2) took the loss, surrendering three unearned runs on one hit and three walks over four innings for the Redbirds.

Hernan Iribarren extended his season-high hitting streak to twelve games.

The Sounds continue their homestand on Monday by welcoming the Round Rock Express (AAA-Astros) to Nashville for a 7:00 pm CT game at Historic Greer Stadium. Southpaw Lindsay Gulin (3-2, 5.30) takes the mound for Nashville against right-hander Bud Norris (2-4, 2.63).

Nashville Box Score

Mike Burns, still on the 40-man roster, making a strong case to be assigned Manny Parra's rotation spot; circumstances (injuries and a crowded staff) haven't been kind to LHP Sam Narron in '09; it's never been more clear that Alcides Escobar is going to be your starting shortstop in Milwaukee for the next six years plus; Angel Salome heating up with the weather for sure; Jason Bourgeois wondering why Jody Gerut is on a big league roster...

Final: Brevard County 6, Palm Beach (Cardinals) 3

Brevard County Box Score

Caleb Gindl and Steffan Wilson go deep, the 7th home run for each, impressive for the FSL on June 14th -- and each drive in two runs, along with Eric Farris, who reached four times; the Manatees were 7-for-7 stealing bases -- this team is relentless; Jeremy Jeffress allows only one earned run (three overall) despite six walks -- vs. AA bats, the results would likely have been worse; Rob Wooten nets save # 18 in a scoreless ninth, striking out the side around a double and a walk; the boys turned three double plays as well; backup catchers Michael Roberts (left field) and Brett Whiteside (first base) got Sunday starts...

Final: Wisconsin 4, Burlington (Royals) 3

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Rattlers hang on to beat Burlington

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers edged the Burlington Bees 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Brock Kjedlgaard's two-run triple in the top of the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie. Wily Peralta struck out eight in five innings and picked up his first Midwest League win. Jim Henderson got his sixteenth save of the season, but not without an interesting final out.

Michael Vass gave the Timber Rattlers (31-32) a 1-0 lead with a two-out double in the top of the second.

Burlington (26-37) scored a run in the bottom of the third inning against Peralta. But, it could have been much worse. A bunt single by Patrick Norris with runners at the corners sent the tying run home from third base. A walk to the next batter would load the bases with no outs. Peralta escaped from the jam by striking out the next three hitters.

The Rattler right-hander cruised through the next five batters, but a two-out double by Nick Van Stratten in the fifth was followed by an RBI single by Eric Hosmer to give the Bees a 2-1 lead.

Wisconsin rallied in the top of the sixth to take the lead again. Burlington starting pitcher Bryan Casey had two outs and a runner at first with John Delaney at the plate. Casey threw a pair of wild pitches and walked Delaney to put runners at first and third with two outs. Burlington elected to go to the bullpen and bring lefty Blaine Hardy into the game to face left-hand hitting Chris Dennis.

Dennis smacked the first pitch from Hardy into left to drive in the tying run. Kjeldgaard was next and he fell behind Hardy 0-2 in the count. But, Kjeldgaard hammered the next pitch over the head of Norris in center for a two-run triple and a 4-2 lead.

Evan Frederickson relieved Peralta in the bottom of the sixth and allowed a run. Jose Bonilla tripled with one out and scored on an Antonio Jimenez sacrifice fly. That run ended the scoreless streak of Timber Rattler relievers at 21 innings. Juan Rivera was next and he singled but, Frederickson would get the final out of the sixth inning. Frederickson retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth innings to keep the Wisconsin lead at 4-3.

Henderson entered in the bottom of the ninth. He gave up a leadoff single to Jimenez. Rivera tried to bunt the tying run into scoring position, but popped the ball up in front of the mound. Henderson made a diving catch and threw to first to double off Jimenez. But, that didn't completely stop the Bees.

Fernando Garcia doubled to right-center to get into scoring position. The speedy Norris was next and he sent a slow grounder to short. The usually slick fielding Michael Marseco hurried his throw and pulled Kjheldgaard off the base and Norris reached. Garcia never stopped and he tried to score on the play. But, Kjeldgaard threw a strike to the plate and catcher Corey Kemp never let Garcia reach the plate until he had tagged him out for the final out of the game.

Henderson is now 16-for-16 in save opportunities this season. He is tied with Brian Stitt for fourth place on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers single season saves list. Stitt had 16 saves in 2004.

Game two of the series is Monday night. Alex Periard, rated by Baseball America as the #13 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, will get the start for the Timber Rattlers in his 2009 debut. Burlington will counter with Tim Melville (1-3, 4.5). Melville is rated as the #5 prospect in the Kansas City Royals organization by Baseball America. Game time is 6:30 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Wily Peralta with a slick 63-to-15 K-to-BB ratio in 51.1 innings -- yes, you need to know that name; Evan Frederickson's recent work is very encouraging, that's coaching for you -- nice job, Chris Hook (and Evan); 20-year-old Chris Dennis doubled, singled, walked -- and bumps his OPS to 1.041...

The performance by Burns (7 IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB) was a statement. With the stakes being raised with a Milwaukee rotation spot open, he showed he's up to the challenge. Coupled with his 4 shutout innings for the Brewers, I have to think he's going to get strong consideration.

You can tell where newspaper budget cuts have hit -- the Tennessean hasn't covered the Sounds in weeks, no feature articles, quotes, photos -- humbug, it may as well be the Florida State League.
I agree. I bought 4 newspapers in Tennessee this week on my way to and from the Outer Banks and found NO coverage of the team. I also tried to listen to some sports radio down there and, while exciting, the only talk I heard was of Escobar. The dude couldn't stop gushing about him...
