Bfan looks awful on MacBook

I'm on my work laptop and Brewerfan.net looks awful on both Safari and Firefox. It's always been like this on this computer (since last October). It runs Leopard. Anyone with this problem?

How does it look awful? Is the look similar in both Firefox and Safari? Would it be possible for you to post a screen capture?

Here are directions for doing screen captures in OS X: How To Capture a Screen Shot with Mac OS X.

I'd recommend using option #3. You might try a couple of times to make sure you have the screen capture you like. That way, you can probably avoid having to edit it in an graphics program.

If you don't have a preferred place to upload images, here are directions for uploading to Yuku:

  1. Click on "Images" in your navigation bar.
  2. If you don't have an album besides "Avatars," click on the "Create New Album" button. Follow directions on the page that pops up. You don't have to make your album viewable to "everybody" to be able to post a picture from it. "Only me" is fine. An album description isn't necessary.
  3. Click on your album, and click on the "upload file" button. You'll be able to browse your hard drive and upload your screen capture.
  4. Click on the uploaded image. Copy the URL of its absolute location.
If you don't know how to post an image inline in a message, posting the link will suffice. (If the image is large, a link might be more reader-friendly anyway.)

I created two images, but I cannot click the images tab here at work. if you PM me your email address I'll send it and you can see it (or post it). I'm stuck in a Saturday work conference on the middle of summer break!

DHonks, you can send them to me at my e-mail address on the About Us page.

I just bought a macbook - arrives next week - so if you have some kind of Macbook specific tips on viewing the site I'd appreciate them.

DHonks, the board's javascript isn't loading for you. The first thing to check would be your browser preferences. In Firefox, open its preferences, click on the Content icon, and make sure "Enable JavaScript" is checked. In Safari, open the preferences, click on the Security icon, and make sure "Enable JavaScript" is checked.

Outside of that, do you have any program or Firefox extension that might keep javascript from loading? You might have Firefox's NoScript extension installed, for instance. That wouldn't affect Safari, though. If you're running an outside program that affects javascript, you'd need to find out how to "whitelist" yuku.com.

homer, this isn't a MacBook issue; you shouldn't be affected by this.

For the benefit of others, these are the screen captures DHonks sent me:

Actually that's exactly how bf.net looks for me behind the firewall at work, it's not a scripting issue. I bring my laptop home and it works great, when the problem initially started to happen to me about 2 months ago I thought it was because we're still using IE 6.0 on our work machines but I'm almost positive this it's a firewall issue of some sort. I can read certain Yuku boards but not many, I'm unable to get into my profile or read personal message while I'm at work, and adding replies to messages is a pain in the rear as I have to use HTML coding from work. However, when I get home IE (even the old version of 6.0) works great. I haven't tried FF or Safari on the work laptop as both browsers are on our restricted software list... I'd imagine that's so the corporation is only coding for a single browser, I wish they'd let us upgrade to to 7 or 8 though.

TheCrew07, that's an interesting observation about the firewall. I think you may have hit on DHonks' issue.

For Yuku to work at its best, static.yuku.com and images.yuku.com need to load. static.yuku.com serves Yuku's javascript and images.yuku.com serves any images stored on Yuku.

DHonks' screen captures definitely indicate that static.yuku.com (javascript) isn't loading. The most obvious sign is dropdowns hanging open.

If you're not seeing the baseball icons, sticky icons, etc., images.yuku.com is probably being blocked, too. That seems to be the case for DHonks. Site logos are hosted by either brewerfan.net or lambeauleap.net. Brewerfan.net-hosted images are showing up just fine in DHonks' screen captures.

The WYWIWYG post editor needs both static.yuku.com and images.yuku.com. It needs the javascript to be functional, and its icons are hosted at images.yuku.com.

When Yuku's javascript doesn't load, there could be all kinds of causes. I remember a time last year when it stopped loading system-wide for a whole morning. If others aren't having a problem, then it's likely caused by setting in the browser, a firewall, or a security program running on the individual machine. Except that Windows users tend to run more security software than Mac users, issues loading javascript shouldn't be directly related to the OS one is using.

A side note on board images... We used to host the baseball icons, etc. on Brewerfan.net. We moved them to Yuku because they'd disappear when the main site went down. If images.yuku.com goes down, problems will extend well beyond these icons not loading. The logo is still hosted on Brewerfan so people moving between the board and the main site don't have to load it twice. If it fails to load on the board, no functionality is lost.

That's difficult to answer without more information.

Does your MacBook render Yuku pages properly when you use it on a network away from school? Does your personal machine screw up Yuku pages when you use it with your school's network? Do other Mac or Windows computers at your school have trouble displaying Yuku pages?

DHonks, if you open up a command prompt (not sure where this is on a mac, but its definitely there), do a:

> telnet static.yuku.com 80

and

> telnet images.yuku.com 80

it should look something like:

telnet static.yuku.com 80
Trying 208.87.216.100...
Connected to static.yuku.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

if it doesn't say "Connected", then you likely have a firewall or web filter blocking access to those sites. If it does connect, its might be a web proxy that isn't caching properly, or the firewall is doing some kind of packet inspection that doesn't like something in the code, or something at a much lower level.

Of course, none of this is likely to help much, but it may be useful for the network admins if you want them to fix it.

On a Mac, you get to the command prompt by running Terminal. It's in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

Paste in "telnet static.yuku.com 80" (no quotes) and hit Return. To escape and bring up a new command prompt, hit "]" (no quotes), then hit enter. Before actually returning to the command prompt, it'll bring up some followup information.

After that, follow the same procedure with "telnet images.yuku.com 80" (no quotes).

Don't include the ">" that Diskono mentions. It won't work.

I'm not sure why blockers like to target static.yuku.com and images.yuku.com. Doing this breaks Yuku rather than blocking it. If they want to block Yuku, they should block all of yuku.com. Or they should be blocking individual boards.
