Kris Benson out...possible 3 way trade.........

Phillies get: OF Kevin Mench, SP Zach Jackson

Orioles get: SP Jon Lieber

Brewers get: 3B Melvin Mora

Aubrey Huff can play 3B for the Orioles, Millar at first, and Jay Gibbons as the DH. Then they will have Payton, Patterson, and Markakis in the outfield...and it would protect the crew to have a proven 3B if Koskie can't go, because the depth we have would remain intact with Counsell and Graffy on the bench.

Mora is starting to slip at age 35. In addition to the no trade clause, he's due $25M over the next three years with a team option or $1M buyout for 2010. Considering you'd have to get him to waive his clause for the trade and then he'd have a no trade clause with the Brewers, I'd be way less than thrilled with Braun on the horizon. You could be stuck with an $8M backup in 2008 and 2009 just to plug a hole this season. Gimme Graffy and the saved salary.

I would kind of think that the Brewers would be stealing Melvin Mora, while Phillies get a fairish deal.

From what I remember reading about the potential Brewers trade for Lieber the Phillies were balking because they wanted a RP in return Turnbow, or as a few articles mentioned they were holding out for Cappellan.

Mora slipped badly last year, and at 35, I'd be wary. Perhaps if he only had 1 or 2 years on his contract, but three is pushing it, especially at $10 million/year. His defense was never steller - average - and as he gets older his range will only decline.

And let's not forget the team seems committed to Braun at 3B. Unless they intend on moving Ryan to OF, no point of adding a 3B with three years on his deal.

Melvin Mora? No thanks. Graffy/Counsell would probably put up about the same numbers as he did last year.

I agree with Ender. Mora is still living off that big year he had a couple seasons ago. He had a career year and now way has he come close to it. I would give up Little Ben and Gwynn Jr for him maybe.

Regarding Kris Benson, I'm curious as to how the Cardinals didn't know about his shoulder injury. I'm not a Cardinals fan (heaven forbid!), but how does a supposedly solid organization like St. Louis NOT have this guy checked out, before guaranteeing him $7M+ this year?

The three years prior to last he had a .905 OPS. I would never expect him to return to that, especially at his age, but he is probably better than his last year .733 OPS. I'd be willing to take a chance on him.

But again, this is a moot point because of the no-trade clause.
