A left handed arm to the Pen....

geothite

I don't hate Wise but I really don't like the fact that Shouse is our left handed option out of the pen.

IF there was a way to move him plus one of our spare outfielder I would be estatic.

I know lefthanded pitchers are at a premium but that us my biggest wish item right now. Shouse concerns me.

Jackson made 8 starts last year. He was usually pretty effective the first time through the order. As guys adjusted to his funky delivery, he got hit harder.

Fair point. 1.06 ERA first time through the order, 6.00 ERA second time. But these are still pretty small samples - 16 inning and 12 innings, repectively.

I'd rather see him starting in AAA than in our pen, but I'm more content with our pen than most.

I'd think about putting him in the pen. ]

On the flip side, lefties had much success against him, to the tune of a 7.88 ERA (limited sample size, of course).

I always thought Eveland could have been a superior arm out of the pen. Let him stick to two pitches, come in and throw smoke, not have pace himself over 6-7 innings. Last year at AAA he held lefties to a .122 BA and an OPS of .380. They crushed him in the bigs, however. Oh well.

Zach did better in the minors last year against lefties - but nothing earth shattering:

23 innings, .247 BA, .309 OBP, .337 SLG.

By the way, geothite, what's your problem with Shouse? He's an extremely effective LOOGY/LHRP option. I don't really think you're being entirely fair.

MY only problem is if Shouse is our only LRHP option AGAIN in 2007!!!

Matt Wise is pretty tough on lefties as well...

Wise basically was used in place of a LOOGY until Shouse was acquired, he has pretty impressive numbers vs lefties. Brian Shouse as a LOOGY doesn't scare me as a fan. When he was overused and left in longer than what a LOOGY should be used for, that's when he got into some trouble.

I do like the idea of adding another lefty as a complement to Shouse, but not as a replacement.
