United Countries of Baseball Map

I saw this map on a t-shirt last year, and thought it was really cool (can't find the t-shirt for sale anywhere, though...it was a limited time thing).

I think the UP tends to lean towards the Brewers. I remember being up there a few years ago and the Brewers were on FM radio. Also, Iowa isn't 100% loyal to the Cubs. It's a pretty even split between the Cubs, Cardinals and Twins. There is also a small Brewer presence now, but it is very small.

Yeah...I always thought it was despicable the way the West Wisconsin skewed for the Twinkies.

Having married someone from that neck of the woods, in their defense, all the TV channels and coverage they get (or at least got up through the mid-90s) was heavily Minnesota focused. People north of Highway 8 and west of Highway 51 feel pretty disconnected to the Milwaukee/Madison part of Wisconsin.

My parents were from the U.P. (Iron Mountain area). They seemed to be Tiger fans back in the day. My dad always tells me the story of when his parents took him to a Tigers game in 1968 during the middle of the Detroit riots. My father's parents and grandparents were originally from Minnesota and I can remember my great grandmother being a big Twins fan.

Well, from the 1966 through 1969 seasons there wasn't a Milwaukee team to follow.

This is partly how my S.O. came to be raised a Cubs fan - the seasons with no Wisconsin MLB team fell when he was age 9-12.

Fortunately, he's grown out of the cub fan thing and is solidly on the Brewers' side now.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Hmmmm...are they really big Tigers fans up in the U.P?

My dad lives way up in northern Wisconsin and works in the U.P. and from when I have visited I've gathered that it's a split between the two teams with a few more Tigers fans.

I was thinking the same thing about the Nats. Does Pittsburgh really draw that far south?

I grew up in the EC area. Always have been a 'Crew fan, but I understand how many of my (stupid) peers when 'the other way.' With the media market and travel being tilted towards The Cities.

Is most of Florida really owned by the Marlins? That seems debatable to me. Everything else looks pretty spot on.
Yeah, that stood out for me--the Braves had the northern part of the state and the panhandle on lockdown even in the late 90s when the Rays had arrived when I last lived in FLA...don't know about now, but it would follow they'd be more into the Rays even than the Marlins

I'm also a little suspicious of the size of that Nationals' territory.

I know for NFL the UP is heavily Packer fans. A lot of the people up there don't even think of themselves as part of Michigan.

How to the Marlins have nearly the entire state of FL?

I would think realistically it would be more like the Marlins having the southern part of Florida, the Rays in the middle, and the Braves taking the panhandle, probably. Also, why does the Marlins "territory" dip into Georgia? That seems odd.

Realistically, I think Marlins territory would extend about 5 ft outside of Land Shark stadium.

I grew up in Iowa. Before the days of WGN the southern counties were heavy Cardinals fans, the West followed the Royals, the north heavy Twins fans. This is still true to some extent, but the Cubs probably do dominate. I've run into many oldtimers in NE Iowa who are still Braves fans dating back to the good ole days in Milwaukee.

No way the Nats have a larger fan base than the Orioles, even with the Orioles decade of losing.

The Astros should definitely have the southernmost part of Texas, the Royals more of Nebraska, the Cardinals more of Oklahoma, the White Sox less of NW Illinois and more of NW Indiana, the Yankees more of Connecticut, and the Nationals less of anything.

One thing this chart doesn't take into account is places like Arizona which may be a lot of D'backs fans but is also loaded with people from otherplaces who maintain their original loyalties. So maybe Phoenix shoul be MLB territory.

But it is a cool map

I'm not even sure it extends inside the stadium from what we saw on our last trip there.

There are probably a few quibbles with the map, but it is a fairly good estimate. Virginia tends to gravitate towards DC as their market. As soon as the Nats get competitive they will probably be bigger there than the O's. West Va. is a Pittsburgh mkt.
