2009 National League Rookie of the Year

jjfanec

I know this is early but I was wondering who were some of the NL ROY the year candidates? No rookie seems to be lighting the world on fire right now. Obviously, there is a lot of ball left to be played, but who are the leading candidates right now? Some of the rookies up right now that I can think of are

Rasmus - playing time will be a problem for him with the way LaRussa uses OF's

Gamel - has not been up long but his numbers are not far off anyone else's

Kawakami - really is not having that good of year

Tommy Hansen - just got called up should be interesting to see

Dexter Fowler - numbers are slipping

Ryan Hanigan - he is getting regular playing time with Votto out and doing well

Jordan Zimmerman - Will get regualr starts do to how bad the Nationals rotation is

I have to be missing some people who are off to good starts or have potential to jump into the mix.

edit - removed Sandoval from the list

Some other guys to keep an eye on below. A few aren't very high upside but are at least getting playtime and well Pat Listach and Angel Berroa won ROYs and they were never high upside.

Gerardo Parra

Chris Coghlan

Tyler Greene

Fernando Martinez

Andrew McCutchen

Antonio Bastardo

It's not too early at all. It's fun to follow the changes in player performances and member opinions as the season progresses. For this reason, I've added this topic to the Designated Threads List.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I don't think Sandoval is a rookie.

I did not either but at least one site I looked at had him listed as a rookie. However I just read this and you are right he is not a rookie. I will edit my initial post

I'm going with Parra. He is putting up good numbers and he is getting plenty of playing time. If the Cards cleared out their OF and Rasmus got everyday at bats he'd probably win it.

I'm taking McCutchen as well. The Pirates are going to let him do whatever he wants... and I can see him going to Pat Listach route and stealing 50 bases in the 2nd half to win the award.

Gamel has a chance if he proves he belongs and starts hitting, he should get everyday at bats.

I really think Gamel has a great chance. Playing 3B should help him a bit compared to the OF like McCutchen/Rasmus/Parra/Coghlan, and I am a huge believer in his bat. I think his defense will be adequate with the chance to be even better than that.

For the sake of the Brewers playoff chances this year, I hope Gamel runs away with it. His HR in St. Louis was so impressive, but he really hasn't impressed me much since then until last night. Hopefully Macha's commitment to giving her regular PT will get him going. .

Yep, it wouldn't surprise me to see Gamel knock 15 out of the park with a .300 average.
What a horrible class.

With those numbers, I think Gamel would run away with it. Plus, rookie of the year voters usually ignore defense - so Gamel has that going for him.

They don't ignore defense otherwise Braun would have been a runaway winner in 2007 instead of barely winning the award.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I actually like Fowler. He's got an OBP nearly 100 points higher than his BA. If he can get his BA up to .280 with the 30-35 steals he's on pace for, I think he wins ROY.

I just don't see him getting the playtime since they brought up Carlos Gonzalez and have Hawpe, Spilborghs, Smith and Stewart chipping away at playtime. Even if they trade a few guys I'm not sure he plays every day.

He is going win the NL and the AL? I mean there are not a lot of great candidates for either leauges ROY. The AL has Elvis Andrus and Nolan Reimold for hitters and three pitchers from Oakland Bailey, Anderson and Cahill but only Bailey has good numbers.
