Would you trade Geoff Jenkins for Jacque Jones?

AJAY

This came up in the recent Geoff Jenkins thread, but I thought it deserved its own discussion. Steve Stone of WSCR in Chicago proposed that the Cubs should try to trade Jacque Jones to the Brewers in exchange for Geoff Jenkins.

Just for the sake of discussion, would you make this trade if you were Doug Melvin? Would you also like to see other players included in a potential deal with the Cubs?

Jones - $4M, $5M

Career .836 OPS

2006 .886

Jenkins - $7M, $9M option

Career .892

2006 .871

Straight up, I'd lean towards yes assuming Jones agrees to a platoon and shuts up about it. Save money, get basically the same production, have to option to deal him next offseason.

I still think the recent Jenkins thread is a huge overreaction though, and want him to remain with the team.

I would not trade Jenkins for Jones solely based on the loss in defense. Jacque Jones spiked more balls when throwing to the infield than a little leaguer. If you thought Carlos Lee was an adventure in the outfield, he's gold glove caliber when compared to Jones IMO.

Dumb idea from Brewer perspective.

If the Cubs think Jenkins is an upgrade over Jones after seeing Jones every day last year, why would the Brewer think any differently?

What Stone is thinking is that both players are disgruntled.

While that may be true, swapping Jenkins for an equal lefthanded OF bat doesn't clear up the crowd in the Brewer OF. It also doesn't free up playing time for Gross who may be better at this stage (he's certainly cheaper) than either of those two.

If I'm going to deal Jenkins to get an OF in return, I'd go for a guy to challange the more expensive Mench not Gross. That guy is Marcus Thames who is without a position on a team that could use a left handed bat. Then I'd dump Mench for minor leaguers and go with a Thames/Gross/Hart, corner OF rotation.

No, in fact I wouldn't trade Jenkins at all right now.

The team can be done with his contract after this season, they've got the personnel to play him at his best defensive postion, and match him up successfully in a platoon situation...that works for me.

The outfield seems terribly crowded right now, but without making a move, it's very possible that Clark, Jenkins and Mench will all be gone following this season. It's not ideal, but we aren't locked into a logjam for several seasons, it'll clear itself up.

I think Jenkins could have his best year since about 2000 or 2001 this year. However, if he's going to pout about not playing against lefties (when he isn't the best person to put on the field), then I would do this trade. Jones is a fantastic fielder and has great range. They're similar offensively, but I think I'd rather have Jones' range and salary than Jenkins' arm and salary.

Yep.

Simply because I think it would be easier to re-trade Jones for value than to try and trade Jenkins for anything else now.

Geoff has just downgraded his trade value by publicly spouting off. If we don't trade him he likely becomes a disgruntled player at which point we trade him for nothing just to get rid of him. He just showed his true colours and what he thinks of the team.

A guy with any character would have walked into Doug's office and spouted off or had his agent do it for him. Then the media doesn't find out. This just shows his lack of class.

These figures are actually off, here are the correct stats:

Jones - $4M, $5M

Career .789 OPS

2006 .833

Jenkins - $7M, $9M option

Career .849

2006 .791

I doubt Jenkins or jones ends up as a platoon player despite what yost says and what jenkin's batting average against lefties was last year. jenkins has hit decent agains t lefties in the past- it's an every other year pattern. I have to believe he'll hit against lefties again.

Whoops, those were their stats vRHP, which I failed to mention. I posted those because they are platoon players and will/would be platooned.

Ahh, gotcha. I looked at those numbers yesterday and thought something looked off. Thanks for the clarification.

I agree with those who say "to hell with Jenkins". I have also been a big supporter and fan of his until the past few days. What a jerk for popping off. If the Brewers really mean so much to him and he wants to win with them, they're finally on the cusp of doing so! Why not try to contribute in whatever way is best for the team and then let the chips fall where they may AFTER YOU FULFILLED YOUR CONTRACT!

I say try to platoon him. If he pouts, then sit his XXX down and let him try to get that 3 year/$30m contract next offseason when his value is zip AND he's considered a bad influence in the clubhouse. At least at that point we'll be rid of him.

At least he's showing that he's a "me first" jerk now versus being disruptive and non-productive during what could be a very fun season for the Brewers!

I would do this trade because Jones' contract could be moved much easier in the near future.

The answer in left field is Gabe Gross my friends. Even if he puts up numbers like Jenks, his attitude is 1000% better and he can play all three outfield spots. The guy is still young and improving.

The whole Jenkins thing has me baffled. He doesn't deserve to play every day, period.

I may be in the minority but I wouldn't do that trade. Jenkins, while more expensive, is also better and has but one truly horrific year. I would gamble on his career year, and imagine what a CAREER year from GJ might be.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. There is no sense in flipping him for another outfielder. If anything, he gets moved for a position of need (3B, lefty reliever), but if I'm the Brewers I play Geoff Jenkins early and often this season. One good month would do wonders for his trade value and/or for the prospect of keeping him for the stretch run when he usually heats up. I don't know, I say hang on to him.
