Official 2009 Draft Pick Selection / Signing Thread

ROUND 22: Michael Fiers - RHP - SIGNED

6'3", 205, R/R, Nova Southeastern University (Florida)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/michael_fiers.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

Fiers has always been able to miss bats, doing so with aplomb during his college career, at Nova, Cumberland College and Broward Community College. He also has enjoyed success in the summers in between, being awarded pitcher of the year honors in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) in 2007. He is now a senior that turns 24 a few days after the draft. Despite his prototypical frame and gaudy strikeout numbers his fastball tops out in the upper-80s to low-90s, and overall he has a good, not great four-pitch repertoire.

ROUND 24: Peter Fatse - 2B - SIGNED

5'10", 170, L/R, University of Connecticut (Connecticut)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/peter_fatse.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

Fatse is a shorter and smaller outfielder/second baseman that has a good approach as a left-handed hitter and good speed. He's a hustling player that has drastically improved his game over the last year, and has 23 career home runs at UConn, a sign that there is some pop in his bat. His upside is as a utility player at the highest level, and he should be able to handle the lower levels of the system well.

NOTES & INFO:

Born August 3, 1987

Improved batting average from .289 in 2008 to .324 in 2009

ROUND 25: Demetrius McKelvie - OF - SIGNED

6'2", 210, L/R, East Columbus High School (North Carolina)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/demetrius_mckelvie.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

McKelvie is a special athlete, one that has a promising two-sport career awaiting him at Marshall. On the gridiron, he's a hard hitting safety with good speed and a strong, physical stature. One the baseball diamond he's a fleet-footed centerfielder with five-tool ability. He has good power potential and a nice arm in the outfield with enough speed to cover ground and steal bases. Keeping him away from Marshall as a 25th rounder will be difficult, but he has shown enough interest in baseball by participating in numerous showcase and tournament events, including playing for the Ohio Warhawks, a national powerhouse travel team, to not rule out signing.

NOTES & INFO:

Born October 27, 1990

Committed to Marshall University for baseball, but intends to try out for football as a safety as well

ROUND 26: Felix Rutledge - LHP

6'1", 195, L/L, Tupelo High School (Mississippi)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/lex_rutledge.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

Rutledge is an interesting left-handed pitching prospect, with a solid build and three-pitch repertoire. His fastball sits in the mid-to-upper-80s, and many believe he will start to throw closer to 90 more consistently as he continues to mature and hone his game. He also throws a big, slow curveball and polished changeup. He is a good overall athlete that can also swing the bat and play the outfield well.

ROUND 27: Ryan Platt - RHP - SIGNED

6'1", 195, L/R, University of California-Riverside (California)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/ryan_platt.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

Platt is a good athlete that has bounced in between the bullpen and the starting rotation during his college career. Before transferring to UC Riverside, he spent two years at LA Pierce College, where he transferred from Sacramento State. He has been in college since 2004, and he turns 24 in August. He has good stuff and a good fastball, but struggles with command and the consistency of his offspeed stuff. He's probably best off in the bullpen at the next level where he has the stuff to succeed if he can hone his command as a pro.

ROUND 28: Eugene Escalante - C

5'10", 195, R/R, Rodriguez High School (California)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/geno_escalante.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

Escalante is a short yet compactly strong backstop that has an exciting power arm/power bat combination. He was ranked as one of the top high school cachers in the nation, and one of the better overall prospects in Southern California along with fellow Brewers' draftee Cameron Garfield. While he has good speed and quickness (he starred as a fullback in football), particularly for a catcher, and will need to work hard to maintain his flexibility. He has good power at the plate, and enjoyed a strong senior year, but scouts still aren't sold on his bat. His strong arm allows him to gun out baserunners, but he needs to work on the finer aspects of catching. He has committed to play for Cal State Fullerton, which will make him a tough sign as a 28th rounder that could have gone much higher in the draft. He has the potential to be a much higher draft pick in three years if he's able to put his entire game together in college, assuming he doesn't sign.

ROUND 29: Chandler McLaren - OF

6'4", 185, L/R, Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute (Ontario, Canada)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/chandler_mclaren.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

McLaren has interesting offensive potential as a left-handed hitting corner outfielder that may eventually move to first base. With good size, he has strong wrists and forearms that give him good bat speed and exciting power potential. He is as raw as they come, and needs plenty of at-bats to refine his swing, but he also has interesting upside. One report I read on McLaren noted that he is built like Justin Morneau, although Morneau is a popular player comparison for any left-handed slugger that hails from north of the border.

ROUND 30: Brandon Sizemore - 2B - SIGNED

5'10", 205, R/R, College of Charleston (South Carolina)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/brandon_sizemore.jpg

BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT:

Sizemore has enjoyed a fine college career, posting solid numbers offensively with a knack for getting the big hit. A shorter, strongly built second baseman, he profiles as a second baseman/third baseman at the next level, likely serving as a utility player if he reaches his full potential. He has shown nice power and strike zone discipline, and has hit left-handed pitchers much better than right-handed pitchers during his career.
