Just in case you visit us directly to this forum or the Link Reports only, be sure you find a quiet time to sit down and read Todd's (splitterpfj's) interview with Cheryl and Mandy Coolbaugh.
An excellent interview. I remember reading an article in (I think) USAToday when Coolbaugh was called up to Milwaukee and him saying how it made all the minor league years worthwhile. In that article, he mentioned a big difference between the minors and majors being how the uniform fit. I also remember reading at the time about the Rockies voting his family a full share of their championship money but today was the first I have heard about the rings and pendent for the kids. Very nice and classy of the Rockies. After reading Todd's interview this afternoon, I wish the Stars would retire Mike's Huntsville #32.

Welch is actually starting tonight. Huntsville leads 4-0 in the 3rd. RBI's for Stern, Rottino, Green and Perez.

Wisconsin tacks on a run in the second on a Michael Vass homer. 3-0 in the 4th.

I got to the WI game late because of a DSL issue at work, I didn't get in the stadium till the top of the 2nd so I missed Lawrie's blast.

I've haven't seen the Rattlers successfully steal a base yet, and they are getting caught on plays that aren't even close.

Merklinger had a guy picked off in the 2nd but BK didn't get the relay to Lawrie in time. I wish I would have had video of it because once the runner went I started watching Lawrie and didn't see why BK was so slow.

When Trejo actually makes contact, he's got power.

Kemp's PO on a throw all the way through to 2nd behind the runner was pretty sweet, I hope I had the camera on long enough to see it. They tried the play later in the game and almost got the runner again.

Sanchez looks comfortable regardless what position he plays, I'm liking him as a utility guy if nothing else down the road. He made a very nice sliding catch to end the 6th.

Kemp's 2B was an opposite field line drive right down the RF line, the RF had trouble with it in the corner and he still couldn't take 3. I like his bat but wow is he slow. I liked what he did behind the dish better than McCraw as well, not anywhere near as many balls were getting through him.

Since moving up in the order Dennis looks different, like he's trying to be perfect maybe? He's striking out way too often, tonight looking twice, he's not protecting the plate very well. He may be correct about the strike zone and better umpires might agree with him as he moves up, but right now he's got to protect and drive the ball.

Later in the game, on both Trejo's and Sanchez's doubles, the Cedar Rapids LF looked lost, he couldn't find the wall either time. Sanchez's double was probably a double regardless, but Trejo's should have been caught, he looked real bad trying to catch those balls.

Almonte looked hittable, he topped around 91 and didn't have much movement on his fastball.

Ritchie threw 1 pitch, hitting 91 on the gun.

Merklinger topped out at 87 on the stalker.

Cody Adams is a funny dude, he was working the stalker tonight it just so happened his "getting to know me" segment was on the board... one of his favorite bands... Eric Komatsu... what was best about his home town... he was born there.

Final: Sarasota (Reds) 5, Brevard County 4, ten innings

The Brevard bullpen's been so inpenetrable, but some cracks this week -- John Axford blew the save in the 9th, and took the walk-off loss in the 10th...

Brevard County Box Score

Three line drive singles, two of them coming with two out, hurt Axford in the 9th, then after the Manatees wasted a leadoff Chris Errecart double in the top of the 10th, yet another two-out line drive single ended the game; Zach Braddock stranded an Amaury Rivas runner to end the 7th, and retired all four men he faced; Rivas with a quality start, no walks and five K's; Zelous Wheeler's 5th home run put the 'Tees on the board in the 4th; Lee Haydel 3-for-5 with a double -- the outfield, left-to-right, was Haydel, Caleb Gindl, and Steffan Wilson; a full game for Brent Brewer and his tender hamstring, but he was 0-for-4...

Brevard County Game Log

Bases loaded, one-out opportunity in the 3rd wasted; Martin Maldonado couldn't get the man in from 3rd with one out in the 6th; Brewer lined out with two on to end the 8th...

Final: Wisconsin 5, Cedar Rapids (Angels) 2

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Rattlers end Kernels win streak

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Dan Merklinger returned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers just in time. The lefty out of Seton Hall made his first start since April 17 a very good one as he tossed six shutout innings to help the Rattlers defeat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-2 Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Brett Lawrie and Michael Vass both homered for the Rattler offense. The Wisconsin win ended the Kernels winning streak at 13 games.

Lawrie, who had been named to the Western Division All-Star squad for the 2009 Midwest League All-Star Game earlier on Friday, lined a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the first inning to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead. Vass extended the lead with a solo homer in the second inning.

Corey Kemp, another Rattler All-Star in 2009, doubled to start the Rattler fourth. Brock Kjeldgaard followed with an RBI double for a 4-0 advantage.

Merklinger, who went on the disabled list after a start at Clinton on April 17, struck out six, allowed four hits, and kept the Kernels off the scoreboard over six innings.

Juan Sanchez padded the Rattler lead to 5-0 with an RBI double in the seventh.

Cedar Rapids (33-21) would not go quietly. A two-out, two-run triple by Matt Crawford off Rattler reliever Rigoberto Almonte cut the Wisconsin run to 5-2. Brandon Ritchie got the final out of the inning to keep the Rattlers in front.

Jim Henderson, the Rattlers All-Star closer, converted his thirteenth save in thirteen opportunities by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He punctuated the end of the Kernels winning streak by striking out the final two batters of the game.

The Timber Rattlers continue their 12-game homestand on Saturday night when they begin a series with the Beloit Snappers. Daniel Meadows (8-1, 3.62) gets the start for Wisconsin. Daniel Berlind (1-5, 4.08) is the scheduled starter for the Snappers. Game time is 6:35 PM.

Saturday is Star Wars Night at Time Warner Cable Field. Timber Rattler players and coaches will be wearing jerseys based on the science fiction classic. Fans may bid on the jerseys during the game and the proceeds from the auction go to Make-A-Wish Foundation Wisconsin.

Characters from the movie will be available for pictures before and during the game. Fans are encouraged to dress in costume and to stick around for the post-game fireworks display.

Wisconsin Box Score

Was the Timber Rattler staff as such on Wednesday that Daniel Meadows had to come in when he's starting three days later (Saturday)? Not a big fan of kids pitching live on their "work days"...

Dan Merklinger repeating low-A after a disappointing 2008 for the '07 6th rounder -- fantastic job here, though; closer Jim Henderson will be 27 in October, so it's hard to get pumped despite all the success -- the Brewers are adamant about providing quality closers at each level, even if they have to hold someone back; Juan Sanchez a double among his three hits, plus an outfield assist; six of the nine Wisconsin base hits went for extra bases...

Wisconsin Game Log

There were 182 fans in Sarasota tonight, nearly 5,000 in Appleton...

Final: DSL Brewers / Orioles 12, DSL Dodgers 7

DSL Brewers / Orioles Box Score

Soon-to-be 20 year old LHP Jose Ramos (6'5", 228) struggled with control (three walks, two wild pitches) when he came on in a tight spot in the 6th, and was also victimized by an error -- he blew the tough save but would get the win after his short stint; 19-year-old RHP Edwin Linares walked two in 2.1 innings, but stranded two inherited runners for Ramos and pitched scoreless ball for the save; Andres Martinez, a 6'2", 188 lb. 17-year-old shortstop, made his pro debut in the #3 hole -- single, walk, sacrifice, HBP, scored two runs -- busy day; youngsters (aren't they all?) Luis Chirinos and Juan Barrini split time in left field (0-for-4 with four K's, although Barrini walked); Jhonatan Javier is the Jason Kendall of the DSL -- he caught the whole game (again), was hit by a pitch (again, Kendall) and has started all six games for this squad, uh -- you may want to place a phone call to the D.R., Reid Nichols; new Brewer alert! 19-year-old Ronny Puello (6'6", 200) played right field, and had a perfect game at the plate (two singles, HBP, sacrifice) -- he actually made his pro debut Wednesday (0-for-3); all five Brewer position players on the squad, all mentioned here, are right-handed bats...

DSL Brewers / Orioles Game Log

Excuse me for not breaking down all the minutia of DSL game logs; we will check to see if it appears players left the game injured -- it does not appear as though Chirinos did...

Final: Huntsville 5, West Tenn (Mariners) 0

Huntsville Site Game Summary

West Tenn's Offensive Woes Continue

Stars Continue Domination Over Diamond Jaxx

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

David Welch tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings and combined with two relievers to blank West Tenn 5-0 Friday night in the opener of a six-game set at Pringles Park. The Stars improved to 31-22 and pushed their lead in the North Division to two games over Carolina, which lost at Jacksonville. The Diamond Jaxx were shut out for a fourth time in their last five games and dipped to 22-33 on the season. Huntsville has won nine of the ten games between the teams, including all five in Tennessee.

Former Stars pitcher Patrick Ryan retired the visitors in order in the first inning but ran into trouble in the second and gave up four runs on four hits and a walk. Kevin Melillo started the inning with a double and scored when Vinny Rottino followed with a two-base hit. Rottino moved to third base on a ground ball out and scored on a Taylor Green base hit to make it 2-0. Freddy Parejo walked and Yohannis Perez then delivered a base hit to center field that plated Green and pushed Parejo to third base, from where he scored on an Adam Stern fielder's choice grounder.

Perez walked and scored in the fifth on a two-out triple by Jonathan Lucroy, who broke a 10 at-bat hitless streak. Ryan wound up matching his longest outing of the season, throwing six innings, and allowing five runs on six hits and a pair of walks. He suffered the loss to drop to 2-5 and has fallen to his ex-mates in both starts against them. Aaron Cotter and Ricky Orta then teamed to throw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

Welch encountered his only real threat in the fifth when Marshall Hubbard singled with one out and advanced to third base on Brent Johnson's second double of the game. The southpaw struck out the lefty swinging Johan Limonta and gave way to right-hander Omar Aguilar, who retired the right-hand swinging Jose Yepez on a shallow fly ball to end the inning. Welch grabbed the win, his third over the Jaxx, to improve to 4-3 after allowing five hits, walking three and fanning five.

Aguilar punched out the side in the seventh and retired all seven hitters he faced, fanning a season-best five, before Casey Baron tossed a perfect ninth inning to close out the Stars' fourth shutout victory of the season. West Tenn has now been shut out in 29 straight innings and managed only one run in its last 46 frames.

The series continues Saturday night, as right-hander Donovan Hand takes the hill for Huntsville against West Tenn right-hander and former Brewer farmhand Steve Bray. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Taylor Green 2-for-4, Freddy Parejo walked twice, and Yohannis Perez continues to try and grab our attention (nice work, but don't buy into it), as the bottom of the order is productive; David Welch 100 pitches in 5.2 innings, despite only two walks; Welch and Omar Aguilar continue to confound with inconsistent outings one game to the next, obviously very good here tonight...

Huntsville Game Log

Speedy old friend Mel Stocker hit into a GIDP in the 6th -- they can never take Stocker's big league time away from him...

Final: Iowa (Cubs) 2, Nashville 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Link for new Chris Cody photo, text follows --

Sounds Drop Final Game to Cubs, 2-1

NASHVILLE- The Nashville Sounds lost to the division-rival Iowa Cubs 2-1 on Friday night at historic Greer Stadium after being held to only two hits on the evening.

The Sounds (31-25) took three of four games in the series and remain 2 ½ games in first place in the Northern Division.

Cubs starter Kevin Hart (1-3) earned the win, throwing five scoreless innings and allowing one hit and five walks.

Sounds starter Chris Cody (0-1) made his Triple-A debut and took the loss after pitching 6 and 1/3 innings, surrendering one earned run on eight hits while walking one and striking out one.

Hart led off the third inning with a single, moved to second on a throwing error, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a sacrifice fly by outfielder So Taguchi for a Cubs 1-0 lead.

John-Ford Griffin and Doug Deeds hit consecutive singles to lead off the fourth inning for the Cubs, followed by Kyle Reynolds reaching base on a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Cody was able to induce a double play and got Dave Macias to fly out to get out of the inning while surrendering Iowa's second run.

Brendan Katin's team-leading 44th RBI trimmed the Cubs lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, grounding out to shortstop and scoring Hernan Iribarren.

R.J. Swindle and Ryan Houston kept Nashville close, combining to throw 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings to relieve Cody.

Adam Heether recorded the second hit for Nashville in the bottom of the ninth singling to center field to start a potential rally, followed by a Cole Gillespie walk. Iowa's Blake Parker then got pinch hitter Carlos Corporan to ground out to end the game, earning his fifth save of the year.

AUDIO: Heether Diving Catch

The Sounds travel to Omaha to take on the Royals for the opener of a four-game series at 7:05 PM CT on Saturday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Sounds right-hander Tim Dillard (7-3, 3.68) takes the hill against lefty Heath Phillips (2-5, 6.96).

Nashville Box Score

Iowa, Omaha, Iowa, Omaha -- enough already! R.J. Swindle stranded two for Chris Cody, and his ERA became more microscopic (0.39) -- we'll overlook Swindle's big league troubles for now; for all the offensive solitude tonight, Hernan Iribarren still managed to reach base three times..

Nashville Game Log

Cody bunted into a key forceout in the 3rd, that hurt, but certainly a fine AAA debut otherwise for the "Commander"...
