From TH:

2B Craig Counsell

SS J.J. Hardy

LF Ryan Braun

1B Prince Fielder

CF Mike Cameron

RF Corey Hart

3B Bill Hall

C Mike Rivera

RHP Dave Bush

And before you ask why the slump-ridden Hall is in the lineup, here is your answer: He is 4 for 6 with 2 HRs for his career against Johnson.

I was excited to hear Macha talk about holding players accountable when he was hired. I'd be happier if he actually practiced this philosophy. Why are McGehee/Gamel not being given a chance to prove they can play everyday when Bill Hall has proven, over multiple seasons now, that he cannot? And when will Corey Hart be held accountable for his lack of production and continued lack of plate discipline?

This is just ridiculous. Bill Hall doesn't deserve to start against anyone right now, much less a dominant right-hander. The justification is that he is 4-6 against him in his career, but frankly I could care less. Macha is turning into Yost with all that crap. Johnson didn't used to be as good, and Hall had that one dominant season, which completely skews those numbers, and makes them unimportant. The point now is that Hall has been horrible all season, especially against righties. Since a righty is starting, Gamel should be starting at 3b. Gamel isn't here to ride the bench, and especially not against a righty. Macha is really starting to piss me off. I guarantee Hall comes up with an 0fer once again, and probably strikes out at least 3 times, but yet Macha won't even pinch-hit for him late in the game, even if it is an important situation. How much worse does Hall have to do before he gets benched for good?

3 weeks ago Hall went 1 for 2 against Johnson with a 2 run Homer. I get the modified platoon with Hall/Gamel with some extra starts for Hall on a matchup like this one. His defense is much better too.

I like the Gerut trade and think he can be a valuable 4th OF, but if he'd been on the Brewers for the entire season this site would be going ballistic...his splits vs. RHP are eerily similar to Hall's. I think he is better than that and DM bought low, but Hart is my starting RF.

I have no problem at all with Counsell starting tonight. But why on earth is Hall starting over Gamel? That is such a small sample size, Macha knows better then that. Gamel needs consistent AB's. Him sitting against a RHP is not helping that. If Ken wants to start a right handed hitter at 3B against Johnson start McGehee.

3 weeks ago Hall was .278/.352/.485, granted he's fallen off a cliff since then, but he hasn't been horrible all season.

.175/.267/.291, those are his stats against righties this year. That's all that matters here. He has no business getting abs against righties, much less starts. Oh, and also 35 K's in 103 abs.

Brian says another reason Hall is in for Gamel is that Bush doesn't strike a lot of hitters out and Hall is a better defender. That might be a good defense if Bush got a lot of ground outs, but he doesn't.

Yeah, that makes no sense at all. Bush isn't a ground ball pitcher. He gets mostly fly balls. With Suppan pitching maybe I could see that, but not with Bush. It's just them trying to justify having a terrible hitter in the lineup for no reason.

It's not all that matters, his fielding is far superior to his replacement. Whether that is enough to make up for his poor splits against RHP is what matters.

I don't care if he's a gold glover. The point is that he's hitting .175 against righties. Right now I'd take the hits. We need all we can get in that department. Especially against a pitcher as good as Johnson. Bush is also a fly ball pitcher, not a ground ball pitcher.

Sure glad Billy is in the lineup tonight. Really needed that strikeout there.

As opposed to the previous 6 outs in the game. Give it a rest.

I'm not saying there isn't a case to be made not to start him, but not to factor in his glove versus his replacement or past success against Johnson is not correct either.

FWIW, Haudricourt said on Homer's show today that Macha is giving him the start today because he has had some success against Johnson and wants to give Hall every opportunity to succeed before pulling the plug. He also indicated that Macha is apparently near the end of his rope with Hall; it sounds like the coaching staff is getting frustrated with Hall because he is unwilling to change his stance and mechanics.

Wow, what a dumb move by Coghlan.... Happy Youngster should be at this game because of the tickets he got from his negotiations with the Marlins, so maybe Coghlan looked up in the stands and saw him among the 7 people there and got rattled.....

Amen to that. I hope this is the end of his leash. Refusing to change anything when he has struggled for over 2 seasons now, especially against righties, is just ridiculous. And I think Hall already has been given every opportunity. There's gotta be a point where Macha should say, either change something and get better, or you're gonna sit the bench. It's as simple as that. Everyone else on this team has listened to everything Dale says, and it has benefitted the good majority of them. Most notably Craig Counsell.
