Dear Mr. Attanasio .. my Tom Glavine pledge to you...

Not sure if this is the proper place to put this... but here goes. I hope all of you will follow suit as Mr. Attanasio will surely read this. *winks*

I, stage name LiveforOctober, with hand on bible, do solemnly swear to attend AT LEAST two additional Tom Glavine home starts and AT LEAST two more additional home games than those games I was already planning on attending. With friends coming with me, concessions, parking, and merchandise... I can promise A MINIMUM of an additional $400 in revenue out of our collective pockets if you are able to sign Tom Glavine.

Sincerely,

LiveforOctober

Glavine could easily be the 7th best SP on the team so I'm not big on signing him. I wouldn't go to a game just to see him either. I won't be mad if you don't send that opinion to Attanasio though~.

His 2009 salary was to be $1 million dollars... the same as Counsell. Would you rather let Parra work out his troubles in the bullpen while Chase Wright starts or Tom Glavine? Our bullpen has been the best part of our team this year, and I think that has as much to do with Hoffman's non pitching influence as it does his 9th innings. Could Glavine could have that effect on Parra and Bush? We'd be improving at least 2 spots in our rotation

He has to prove he is healthy of course, and I understand he is old, but he is only a year and a half removed from being 13-8 with a sub 4.5 ERA which is better than 3 of our current starting pitchers... and 2 1/2 years removed from 15-7 with a sub 4 ERA.

I'd rather just keep starting Parra than sign Glavine personally. I think the odds of Parra turning things around and being a decent pitcher the rest of the season are higher than Glavine coming back and being decent.

Only has a different meanings depending on age. Only means- decent chance he can return to that level- if the player is 30. Not so good a chance if he is 40.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

They were just talking about this on the D-List. While Glavine is a future Hall of Famer, he didn't exactly look stellar last year. I'm not opposed to the Brewers taking a look at him, but I just don't know how much he really brings to the table at this point. I would feel the same way about Pedro Martinez.

If they're going to make a move for pitching, I'd rather them get someone who is actually still good, not someone whose best years are far behind them.

I would also argue that most big league pitchers who turn 40 are not Tom Glavine. I don't mean that to sound snide either... but as a guy who never has relied on power to be effective... he has to prove he is healthy ... but I'm not sure the age thing is as big a factor with him as trends say for others.

It didn't seem snide at all. in fact it is a very good point. I would much rather take a shot at Glavine having something left than Pedro for those very reasons. I am more worried about his poor year last year and his durability because those things mean more at his age than than what he did two or three years ago.

I agree, but to me it doesn't hurt to sign one of these guys to a low contract. I say that about them and any other free agent...we wouldn't have to trade any prospects in order to get someone who is 'good'. I'd rather roll the dice with a cheap free agent for a few weeks before I think about getting rid of prospects.

Easy on the condescension, please.

As long as it is all aimed at me I'm ok with it. Plus, most of them are being condescending for the wrong reason... so it is more funny to me than insulting at this point. I understand as a general rule though we should leave it out of discussions.

Meanwhile, I still think we should talk to him to see if there is mutual interest. If we obtain a serious rotation injury I'd much rather have him than any of our AAA options (Dillard is the only one you could convince me on) ...

First of all, I doubt that Glavine would want to play in milwaukee. He said recently, either this off-season or last that he would only play for atlanta, or new york. Secondly if atlanta gave up on him, I really do not think that he has anything left.

Pedro (as painful as it would be to watch him try to hit . . .) and Byrd would both be better options

You have to believe that if Glavine had anything left the Braves would have let him come up, make 1 start, and officially retire as a Brave. I understand that the 1 mil would have vested, but that could have been renegotiated, I'm sure.
