Bobby Kielty injured (3-6 wks.); Send Mench back to AL West?

Oakland A's OF Bobby Kielty "to have left knee scoped," due to a torn meniscus. I'm no doctor, but that sounds painful.

Given that Kielty notoriously feasts on LHPing --

His past 3 year totals: .303/.367/.519/.886

What say we attempt to ship La Cabeza back to his familiar haunts of the AL West? Again, not an MD, but for anything torn in a knee, 6 weeks seems like a low-end estimate. That's just me....

Don't know for sure how good or not these guys are, but Oak. seems to have as many LHRPs as one could hope for, with:

Dan Meyer (6'3", 220)

Jay Marshall (6'5", 185

Joe Kennedy (6'4", 245)

Brad Halsey (6'1", 187)

Ron Flores (5'11", 198 )

Alan Embree (6'2", 190)

Lenny DiNardo (6'4", 190)

Seems to me that a reasonable guess is that one of those guys is a LOOGY (at worst) and could be had for Mench, given the A's surplus of LP's

Thoughts?

Dan Meyer is still pretty young(turns 26 in july), but IIRC, he used to be a big time prospect when he was with ATL. That being said, i have yet to hear anything about him in years, and he hasn't played in the majors since '04. We could probably get him and another prospect for Mench.

They have to much depth to worry about this injury.

Swisher was moving to 1B fulltime, and he could be moved back to the OF with Dan Johnson starting at 1B.

Do some people even look at a roster before they post these rumors??

Kotsay is seeking a 2nd opinion on his back. Now if that turns out to be serious coupled with a temporary loss of Kielty I think that very well could put them in the market for another OF. Having to rely on Shannon Stewart as your insurance is not real comforting.

Stewart. Bradley, Swisher to start and Buck to come up and play if they really need the help.

They are now going to need an outfielder from somewhere at least as a backup.

Brady Clark makes a lot of sense for them as he plays CF. They wouldn't have to give up any value to get him. I still don't see a match with them for either Mench or Jenkins.

I don't know what Shannon Stewart is there for. He can't play the OF anymore. But he'll get hurt, so that takes care of that problem.

Kotsay is out for three months, too, so the OF is kind of in disarray. They were always rumored to like Mench last season, but I don't really buy it.

maybe Mr Melvin has already Talked with the a"s about a possible deal.

Melvin says no.

Quote:
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he has not heard from the Oakland Athletics, who are losing centerfielder Mark Kotsay for at least three months with a back injury. In fact, Melvin said no club has called to inquire about his glut of outfielders. "You'd think (teams would call) but the trouble with trying to do things now is teams have their payroll set," said Melvin. "For them to take on extra money now is tough. "It's still a little early. It'll probably be another week (before trade talk heats up). I always figure when we get to about games 15 to 20 (in exhibition play), somewhere around there, teams have a better idea of what they've got and what they need."

On Talkin' Brewers today, it was mentioned that Doug had "touched base" with about a dozen clubs in the last day or so, but everyone still seems to be in self-analysis mode of their own rosters -- still a bit too early, expect things to heat up in a week or so...

Is that their polite way of saying they might be interested, but they want to take as long a look at the Brewer OFs as possible? The ABs may not mean a lot sample size, but the clump of OF we have is fairly tightly bunched in terms of abilities. Lots of different strengths and weaknesses which is why you let your scouts try and get a nice look and see who matches best at this stage.

When your team is starting Shannon Stewart every day you are in trouble. He's been hurt 2 of the past years and posted a .705 and .714 OPS the past 2 years and doesn't have much range in the OF. They'd be better off starting Nix or Clark full time than Stewart.

Besides a torn meniscus isn't that bad. They don't have to cut the whole knee open or anything. 4-6 weeks is pretty standard, but a typical professional athelete in good shape could be back in four weeks.

That being said with the depth that the A's have and the fact that Kielty is only going to miss a few weeks of the regular season, there is no way they trade for Mench. Good thought though.

More likely they would just wait until Nix is cut, pick him up for a month and then dump him

If the plan for the A's is to contend they will not target a guy to be cut. More likely they will look to trade for a cheap alternative.
