The first deal is ridiculous. Why not just waive Jenkins and eat his salary. Tanyon Sturtze? Is he still on a roster?

The second, Mench for Brown is lopsided in the Brewer favor. Brown had a nice year last year, .287/.358/.457. Can't fathom the Royals dealing him for anything but pitching. And you would DFA Brown? Heck he'd be my starter in left right now.

Crawford isn't going anywhere.

Redding is 4A fodder so this would just be a deal to shuffle AAA bodies.

Jaybird, I won't pile on. You were having fun and getting creative. We all do it. It just takes discussion forums like this to have folks ready to point out holes you may or may not have known about.

I could see one or two of those deals working, and sure, I'd love to have Carl Crawford. I don't think Sturtze, Emil Brown, & Redding are guys I'd be after, mainly because I don't think they represent much of an upgrade from what we already have.

I'd love to see Doug Melvin turn a deal or two like the Franklin & Estrella for Villanueva & Woolard (or was it Wooley?) -- ones where you give up something known for potential nuggets. The Twins getting Joe Mays (who was quite good before he got injured 3-4 yrs ago) and David Ortiz from Seattle for Dave Hollins also comes to mind. I don't know that any of our OF surplus (whomever you'd see as surplus beyond Hall & Hart) would net major big-league roster parts on their own, but may when combined with a little potential/depth from our bullpen. So I think it's much more likely that they make deals for mid-grade or sleeper-type prospects.

I sure want to see this all unfold.

How about sending Jenks & Hendrickson to LAD for Larry Bigbie?

Bigbie's been impressive early in ST, and hits RHPing. IIRC, his defense & glovework are fine. Perhaps a reliver in return as well?

These are just my thoughts...

Seems like a lot of people say, "Would love Crawford here, but we can't give up Gallardo no matter what."

Well, in all fairness, what would you expect? Of course it would require Gallardo or someone like that. Crawford is probably the premiere outfielder for potential in baseball. They'd never let him go for scraps, even a package deal with Gallardo might not be enough.

That being said, I am a firm believer that no one is untradeable given the right offer. Let's imagine this scenario:

We're leading our division near the trade deadline, but it's close. We're a pretty well rounded team, but the outfield situation is a little weak. Our rotation is living up to all expectations. Villanueva has earned the 5th spot and has proved last year wasn't a fluke with 9 wins and a sub 4.00 ERA. The rest of the rotation is doing exactly what is expected, giving us the best all-around rotation in the league.

If we had that chance to make that trade there, could we really pass it up, even at the expense of losing Gallardo? We lose what could have been our ace of the future. We gain a star outfielder and instantly become a favorite for a trip to the World Series in 2007.

What's the risk vs. reward situation there? I guess only Melvin could answer that.

Man that would be nice. Id say keep Gallardo, its hard to come by a cheap possible ace of the future. Sheets may not be re-signed, cappy might leave(all this in 08). And what do you know, our rotation isnt the best anymore.

If we're rocking and it looks like our pitching prospects are producing, or on the verge, I say we trade Capuano. As mentioned earlier, he could easily be gone in the near future, and while he may be our only lefty, such things are almost trivial to me, with the advent of the bullpen for needed match-ups. Furthermore, and I know this may sound petty, but he is a Duke-educated Economics major, which would signal to me his preoccupation with that which is green (and I'm not talking Elijah Dukes' green, though I would love to see the package of Rocco or Crawford include the former linebacker). But such talk is not applicable until Yo and/or CV the Younger force managements' hands.

I'd say you are more optomistic than I am. I think it is "Sheets will no be re-signed."

The club can't admit it, but with the way salaries are going - Sheets is a goner. Hence, they can't trade YoGa because they are counting on him to replace Sheets as the Ace in 2009.

On one hand . . . no one ever really knows what will happen.

On another . . . it's at least fun to speculate. So....

- IF the upper level starting pitching prospects (Yo, CVilly, Inman, ZJ, etc.) continue to improve,

- IF Capuano either prices or underproduces himself out of Brewerdom, and IF the Brewers are still looking to open up some outfield space on the roster, and

- IF Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford continues his 5-tool, high-ceiling ascent, then...

Do the Brewers consider Capuano (and possibly DH material like Mench or reserve depth like Clark or Gross) as a principal element of a deal for Rocco Baldelli (and others that make the overall asset/value on both ends fairly equal?

I suppose a deal like this also presumes that Hall & Hart still play everyday, and that Baldelli will, too, so Jenkins must also get moved along the way, which ought to net something decent in return if the adjustments he's finally made still have a substantial positive impact on his regular-season production.

I like Capuano quite a lot, but I raise the idea for reasons others also have in this thread, and because he still needs to prove his shaky 2nd half was the fluke, not his great year-and-a-half.
