Would be interesting to see the details of the renogiated TV deal, but I have confidence that Attanasio did well for the Brewers.

When Bob Wolfley reported that "Television ratings for Milwaukee Brewers games on FS Wisconsin this season show the tenth-largest jump in baseball compared to last season," my first thought was that their ratings were already excellent and that there wasn't the room for improvement that other teams had. The information kramnoj provides seems in line with that thought.

I haven't heard anything about the value of the new TV contract except for this this snippet in an LA Times article about the possibility of the team acquiring Jake Peavy:

[The Brewers] signed a fat new cable deal last month.
Thanks to tristarscoop for pointing out the link.

Note that we already have a Jake Peavy thread. There's no need to discuss his situation in this thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

The fact that a Sutton/Grace broadcast is number one leaves me speechless. To me, I just learned that the D-Backs have some diehard fans.

Looks like the Yankees have the highest total viewers with the Red Sox having the highest overall rating. I am surprised to see the Brewers in line with some larger markets while at the same time with attendance on pace to break records. When the Crew is in MKE the total percentage of the local population either watching the game on TV or in person must be off the charts.

Ah.. um, yeah. So, an alphabetical list, you say? It says ranked by average ratings! And I read it too fast out of laziness! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gifhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif

What impresses me is that the Brewers rank 14th in total households (71,000). I would think that would be significant when negotiating a TV contract.

When arbitrarily removing the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and Cubs, the average of the rest of the teams is 65,560 households.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I find it funny that the Nationals rating went up 55% but their rating is abysmal (0.53), which means it was just atrocious last year.

The Marlins must have the highest ratio of TV viewers to attendance...if they counted only actual people in the park for attendance. Brewers TV audience is probably about double the average attendance, while Marlins is what maybe 10-20 times the number of people actually in the park.

I remember seeing a figure of about 30,000 households for the Brewers a few years ago, if that recollection is correct they have doubled since then.

It seems that I recall ratings of 2-point-something or 3-point-something. That'd be in line with 30,000 households.

Bob Wolfley had this to say in his column today:

"Television ratings for Milwaukee Brewers games on FS Wisconsin this season show the tenth-largest jump in baseball compared to last season. Through May 20, Brewers games have averaged almost a 7.9 rating on FS Wisconsin, a 12.6% increase from last season, when the team advanced to the playoffs. According to a SportsBusiness Journal analysis of Nielsen Media Research data, there are nine baseball teams with bigger increases in average rating this season, compared to the same time last season .The Chicago White Sox, Kansas City, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tampa Bay, Texas and Washington showed bigger local increases in average than Milwaukee."

Yeah, I mentioned that in reply #2 (which includes a link). When you look at the chart, you see that Wolfley kind of missed the point. pitchleague's example of the Nationals' 55% increase (reply #8) illustrates that.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I was surprised to see Milwaukee better than average in households... hopefully the new TV contract will free up money for mid-season acquisitions... as far as the attendance to viewers ratio, you have to remember that there is going to be more than one person watching in each household... I wouldn't be surprised if 2 to 3 on average were watching each of the 71,000 TV's... especially when you consider all the bars and restaurants.

  • 1 year later...

Don't know if this deserves a new thread, or an amended title, but I saw a recent listing of RSN ratings and thought it would be interesting to see the difference a year makes. Brewers still rank high relative to other teams, at number 8, but have dropped about 27% from last year.

So the Marlins have more viewers than the Brewers, a big surprise. I was under the impression that no one cared about the Marlins in Florida. Only 5 teams average less viewers than the Brewers, it shows how small the TV market is for the Brewers.

When I visited Miami, I was surprised at the fan support for the Marlins. People are scared away from the ballpark because of the rain (up to 50% of the games have rain delays), the poor amenities, and the bad location.Unfortunately, the new stadium will also have accessibility issues, but they should see some improvement.

I was also reading that the Red Sox will lose their #1 TV ratings ranking due to their significant decline.

The Royals do surprisingly well considering how terrible they are.

I do remember hearing that the Rays and Marlins actually have really big fan bases and get good ratings, people just don’t go because of the ridiculous ballparks they play in.

It is cool to see that the Brewers who play in the smallest market get good ratings and good attendance.

The Marlins rating is actually pretty bad. That the number of viewing households is comparable to Milwaukee is mitigated by the fact that Miami/Ft Lauderdale has a population equivalent to the entire state of Wisconsin, and that doesn't include that part of the Marlins TV market north of Broward County.

There are a lot of good baseball fans down there, but many of them are Yankee fans.
