DiFelice hurt? [Updates in replies 24 & 25: injury not believed to be serious; Mark will be leaving team for funeral)

Recommended Posts

I've been telling everyone all off-season to watch out for Rickie Weeks and Mark DiFelice. I apparently have the kiss of death. Great. This would be a big loss if it's at all serious.

Ack, Dillard just pitched on Sunday. So did my dark horse for a callup - Cody.

Odds are Nick Green or Chase Wright - isn't Wright on one of those "paper moves" to Helena, so he should be fresh. They'll probably go for a guy who can go multiple innings.

They do have the option of putting Weeks on the 60-day to add Chris Smith. Or they could DFA Julio. But if they have to DL DiFelice they may have to keep Julio for now.

My other dark horse - McClendon from AA. Unlikely, but he's been pitching from long relief all season with a 1.02 WHIP and 2.29 GO/AO and only 5 BB in 35 innings.

Uuuuuughhhhh

The Brewers haven't had much luck calling up LHP R.J. Swindle, who gives up runs every time he comes up and pitches.

Yes, Tom. You've pegged it. Every single time he pitches, runs will be surrendered. Good call.

To be fair, I believe what Tom said was more descriptive than predictive, and it is 100% correct.

The best move is to either DFA Julio or move Weeks to 60 day and bring up Smith. Smith has pitched just 1 inning since last Wednesday and should be fresh. The next best option is Matt Ginter. Ginter pitched 5 innings on Saturday, but he's been effective recently (5 ER, 13 H, 16 K, in last 20 IP), and he's got the most major league experience of anyone on that Nashville staff.

Totally agree, but when your job is writing, discussing things in the right tense is (imho) exceedingly important.

He used a perfectly acceptable and accurate tense. He used present tense, which is allowed for things that have occurred in the past and continue to the present. There's nothing misleading about it.

I disagree and think it's misleading. I thought the same thing. "He gives up runs every time he comes up and pitches" makes it sound like that's what will happen every time he pitches IMO. It reminds me of the "The Brewers lose every time Chris Capuano pitches!" thing from a couple years ago.

"He gives up runs every time he comes up and pitches" belongs in a vent thread, not in an article and not in a blog entry intended to inform. It's egregiously unprofessional.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Swindle has been called up twice, pitched in three games and given up a run in each of those games. Again, TH said: "He gives up runs every time he comes up and pitches." It is fair and accurate to use present tense, because a) it occurred in the past, and b) continues to the present.

Here's the sentence in full context:

"The Brewers haven't had much luck calling up LHP R.J. Swindle, who gives up runs every time he comes up and pitches."

I can't believe this is a discussion.

The only events he described were in the past. He described them as inevitably continuing in any & all future events. That is incorrect, and as Casey pointed out, juvenile.

And maybe you think I'm wasting everyone's time by discussing this... honestly doesn't change how I feel about it. I think a huge problem in fans' perceptions of baseball is the unchecked power those paid to inform them of the games have. I hate when an announcer says, '[Player X] is a .294 hitter' just because that happens to be player X's current batting average. While in any single occurance the significance is admittedly small, the cumulative effect imho leads to a large exchange of erroneous information. And yes, I am a huge nerd, both as a baseball fan & a grammar 'fan'

I agree with Casey and TLB. Very unprofessional. He's using a whopping 3 appearances (the "runs every time he pitches") as the basis for his perception of why Swindle cannot be called up. In other words, as TLB said, he is painting this as an inevitability. Very unfair to the young man, because now this perception of him is out there for mass consumption in the main stream media.

Yeah. Maybe we could try to insist that TH stick to one topic per blog entry. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

You can argue that what TH is saying , tensewise, is accurate, but it is vague. If you put something in the simple present, it comes across as a habitual action. Furthermore if you're using past actions as the semantic basis for your present tense construction, you are pretty much saying that the past actions are indicators for actions to come. If you say, "I go to Brewers games", it means you regularly go to games, and that is is reasonable to expect that you will go at some point in the future.

As a sports journalist, Tom H should stick to facts. Swindle has given up runs every time he's been up. That's what might discourage management from calling him up. Not that he is always expected to give up runs by management. If Tom H knows that is the reason as a fact, then that is what he should report.

I hope that DiFelice is hurt that they don't rush him back. I don't know what the future holds in terms of getting starting pitching, and if we'll procure a pitcher who can lessen the workload for the bullpen. The last thing I want is a BP meltown from nagging injuries come September.

I do wonder if Swindle will get another chance in the big league club. He's doing so well at AAA, that I have to believe he has some value at the big league level. I hope so anyway.

It's a blog. The guidelines for journalism tend to be looser with blog entries than with actual newspaper articles. You may not like it, but that's how it is.
Fair point, but since Tom H is the "beat writer" for the Brewers, I don't think he should get to hide as much behind the blog excuse as much as a true blogger does. If he wants to, that's fine, but then I think the complaints that he's "unprofessional" are fair game.
