Bad game all around, but enough freak stuff happened where I think you just chalk it up to "It wasn't our night", and come back tomorrow ready to play. Hopefully Cameron and Braun are both OK.

Also, something that just occurred to me...what happened to Jerry Augustine? Haven't noticed him on the broadcasts lately.

Wow. Tonight brought me back to the good ol' Yost days. I didn't get to see the game, but I did a double take when I saw that Julio entered a 4-2 game. What an unbelieveably awful performance.

And, um, why did Prince try to steal third? With 0 out?

Did anyone else notice that the bullpen phone did not seem to be working. Kyles was trying to get a dial tone before the inning blew up. I thought it funny as he seemed to be waiting for a call to come and realized he had no dial tone.

A few things:

1 Julio sucks

2 Given the weather the game might have been called at any time so Macha likely didn't want to use any pitcher for more than one inning in case they had to go 1.5 games tomorrow

3 Given 2 , the 6th inning vs the bottom of the order with a 2 run lead is pretty much the best point to use Julio

4 The bullpen phone not working just really makes it absurdist

Macha was saying after the game that he was basically short pitchers, and that after tonight, the Brewers may need to bring in another arm by tomorrow. My take was that he sounded like he really didn't want Julio in there in the first place, but that there wasn't much choice and he was hoping to get away with it against the number eight and nine hitters.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Yet he wound up using three other pitchers anyway down 3 runs instead of up 2. I'm not buying it. It was a bad decision that was poorly executed and had no backup plan. And if Julio had anything to say to Kendall I hope it was where to forward his mail.

As Casey said, according to TH Macha explained that he was pretty much forced into using Julio that inning:

With Todd Coffey available for the seventh and Carlos Villanueva the eighth, Macha needed Julio to cover the sixth inning but he couldn't do it, failing to retire any of the six hitters he faced.

"We needed one inning to get to Coffey and Villanueva," said Macha. "We couldn't get it out of Julio. It turned pretty ugly that inning. All in all, it wasn't a very pretty game on our part.

Julio had turned in four scoreless outings entering the game after mostly bad work in the early stages of the season. No matter how he was throwing the ball, Macha had no choice but to go to him.

"The question wasn't whether I trusted him," said Macha, who indicated another reliever might be summoned as protection for the game Tuesday night. "He needed to pitch that inning.

"We're stretched out in the bullpen. I had to get that one inning out of him and it didn't happen."

Looks like a roster move will be made overnight. TH noted that DiFelice is battling some kind of inflamed elbow problem and it's so stiff he can't pitch. With Parra going tomorrow, they'll almost definitely need someone to suck up an inning or two. I imagine Julio would be the one to go, barring a DL stint for DiFelice.

OK, having read the JSOnline comments linked above, I accept Macha's explanation for 'having to trust' Julio. I even appreciate his all-but-admission that he doesn't trust Julio. Of course, he could have moved to a plan B sooner, and it was flat-out bizarre that the bullpen phone didn't seem to be working when it was needed.

If this outing last night results in Jorge's removal from the roster, the ugly 6th inning will not have been in vain.

I'm ready to move on, particularly from Julio but also from the game as a whole. Someone earlier in this thread commented that the 6th was the worst inning since Easter night. That's seven weeks and a day between really dreadful innings. I can think of times when they came much more often.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

What? Why? What's there not to buy? Macha gave a perfectly reasonable explanation for using Julio.

According to McCalvy;

The Brewers lost the lead and their starting center fielder in the sixth inning of Monday's 7-4 loss to the Marlins, when Mike Cameron exited with a flare-up of tendinitis in his left knee.

Left fielder Ryan Braun exited later in the same inning, but manager Ken Macha insisted that move was a simple double-switch. Braun, the manager said, was "fine."

Cameron, though, will be re-examined on Tuesday before the Brewers continue their four-game series at Land Shark Stadium. The 36-year-old missed a handful of games last season with a similar injury.

"It sparked up more than normal in the outfield," Cameron said. "It 'pressurized' more than normal. It's something I can deal with. I just irritated it pretty good."

Really, the bullpen situation wasn't as dire as Macha is making it out to be. You could reasonably expect Coffey (who hadn't pitched since Friday) to go two innings, so you just needed one inning out of Villy or McClung, then Hoffman. Go for the win in a very winnable game. If we need to hold another lead on Tuesday, you're in the same situation but with a win in game one, and if we're behind, you let Julio pitch with no lead to blow.

Putting Julio in was an example of the wishful thinking that Yost was so often accused of. Expecting a bad pitcher like Julio to pitch a clean inning was wishful thinking. Obviously, an implosion of that degree was unexpected, but Macha should have realized that there was a good chance Julio would need to be bailed out. And if Julio needs to be bailed out, there's no reason to be using him in the first place. Some of the blame has to go toward Melvin as well when we have some guys throwing pretty well in AAA right now.

How many runs before it's OK to leave the bases loaded?

I think the number is 7.

Putting Julio in was an example of the wishful thinking that Yost was so often accused of.

Yeah I had to chuckle at that as well. I guess more managers manage like that than we realize.

My notes

1) I think Fielder stole the base because he got tired standing at 2B and wanted to get out of the rain

2) The strike zone seemed inconsistent around the edges

3) I don't like Hall batting 2 instead of Hardy, even against LHP. No real reason other than I am not a big Hall fan. I think the LHP splits have them pretty equal over 2006-2008

4) Jorge Julio, adios muchacho, better luck with your next team

5) Florida Marlins,, get your phones working.

6) Bill Hall, how are you related to the official scorer. Seriously, a ball hit right at you hits you and no error? What the crap?

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.
