Draft slotting

This just popped up on MLB Trade Rumors: "Bud Selig has repeatedly cautioned clubs about the economy, and at the owners' meeting last Thursday he told them he was doing something about it and sternly advised them to listen. The commissioner told the owners that his office planned to roll back the recommended signing bonuses for the June 9 amateur draft by 10 percent." The Brewers have always strictly adhered to the slot system. They were 1 of just 4 teams to not sign a player for 250 K over slot last year. Considering how well the Brewers draft, you have to be impressed with their efficiency. The key is avoiding Boras clients (unless they're college seniors), but that keeps getting harder to do. Boras will represent about 1/3 of the 1st round this year.

Will the union have a beef with this?

The union isn't involved with the draft. If anything, the union would be in favor of limiting money spent on the draft, because that would theoretically mean more money is available to spend on major leaguers. There isn't a direct relationship, as I believe most teams have a draft/development budget that is different than the major league payroll budget, but still more money for the team leads to a possibility for more money going to union members.
