Chicago Tribune Rumor: Clark for Mackowiak

Todays Tribune mentions that the Sox have no room for Mackowiak and could deal him. Also that the Brewers could be interested in Mackowiak for his ability to play at 2nd and 3rd. The author then mentions Clark in a possible trade, but adds that the Sox already have Luis Terraro and Brian Anderson as backups in CF.

The whole thing can just be the author's idea I suppose.

I'd be interested in knowing what the Brewers see in Mackowiak... He's a versatile player but there doesn't seem to be any playing time for him in Milwaukee unless he comes in and starts at third until Braun comes up or Koskie makes what is seeming now like an unlikely recovery. Maybe the Brewers feel Graffannino/Counsell isn't a starting option at third and they need that extra infield depth with Koskie not being available.

And from the White Sox perspective, this trade doesn't seem to make a lot of sense... Over-priced outfielder probably on the downside of his career and coming off a bad season for a guy who is three years younger, less expensive, who also plays the outfield and is more versatile. Why would they even consider the trade?

I could see this trade working.

Brian Anderson has yet to do anything at the plate, Ozzie says he can deal with that. Ozzie says a lot of things that don't make a lot of sense however. Clark would be an upgrade for the team.

Mackowiak would deepen the Brewer bench so I don't know why there would be issue with bringing him a board. As much as I like Braun he needs to be given time to get a handle on 3b or to adjust to the OF. This move would buy Brewers time and not have to rely on Counsel everyday if an injury occured.

If that deal's available, I jump at it.

One word of warning: Mackowiak doesn't exactly fit the "cutting down on Ks" priority reiterated time and again by Doug M.

Career K/BB rate = 498/193, or roughly 5/2. That's not good, and I'm sure Doug's aware of this.

That said, I again say that I'd love to see this deal, if it can happen. Rob M. can play seemingly every position on the diamond, save SS, C, & P. I'd love that. A grown-man's (and MLB lifer's) Vinny Rottino

Considering that I think that Brady would be cut if he wasn't making 3 million, I think this is a no brainer.

We have 6 outfielders that are better than Brady right now. Gwynn, Gross, Hart, Mench, Hall, and Jenkins all should be kept over Brady.

Since Gwynn can go back to AAA, there is our five outfielders. Pretty solid.

I'd rather add a relief prospect with one of our outfielders and give Vinny Rotoni the 25th job

Rotoni isn't going to add much to the bench. He can catch and play some 3B, we need more at the last spot on the roster. Mack can play all OF spots, 2B, 3B and 1B.

Rotoni's best bet is to get on with a team as a backup catcher.

This trade makes sense for both teams. I give it better than 50-50 chance.

The Sox were interested in getting Rowand back but the Phillies wanted too much. Brady Clark is not all that dissimilar to Rowand. When they were pursuing Rowand, the report was they only really wanted a guy for one year.

They tried Mackowiak in CF last year occasionally and it was a disaster. With the addition of Erstad, his bench role is reduced.

Mackowiak would be a much better platoon option for the Brewers at third than Counsell and a guy who could be dealt if and when Braun shows he's ready.

I would think that wicth Rob M's versatility he would be easier to spin off into the season as well. If Braun comes up or if Koskie miraculously comes back I would think Mack would entice a team hurt by injury a little more than an overpriced Brady.

I love the deal - another veteran left handed bat off the bench, and this one can play anywhere on the field. He is hitting the heck out of the ball this spring

12-33 with with four runs, three doubles, one triple, one homer and eight RBI in nine spring games.
