it's crazy that Brevard can have a scheduled off day given that seemingly half their schedule has been PPD. Memorial Day day baseball rocks, as in 1995 I caught my first (of 2) foul balls. Off Joe Oliver's bat, in the game when Seitzer got hit in the face be a Scott Erickson fastball

Just posted this in the Transaction Thread, but it relates to today's action as well --

This makes little sense given that Sam Narron spoke of just normal soreness after a start in a recently linked audio interview, but he's been placed on the Nashville DL retroactive to May 23rd, so that catcher Patrick Arlis can be activated from the Helena roster.

As you'll see in Monday's Link Report, Angel Salome left today's Nashville game in the 4th. Nick Green tossed a painful (and long) first inning, and here's hoping Angel's back isn't playing games with him again.

So even though the Arlis activaton took place prior to Angel leaving today's game, it may have been necessary anyway.

Final: Huntsville 5, West Tenn (Mariners) 2

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Huntsville Takes Four of Five From Jaxx

Stars Set to Start Showdown Series in Sevierville

Brett Pollock, MiLB.com

Adam Stern had three hits and scored twice and the bullpen backed David Welch with four scoreless frames to preserve Huntsville's 5-2 win over West Tenn Monday afternoon in the last of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars took four out of five to lift their record to 21-19 and take a game and a half lead in the North Division over the Smokies, pending the outcome of their game later tonight. The Diamond Jaxx slipped to 17-26 after falling to the Stars for an eighth time in nine games.

Stern started the home first with a double, moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a Taylor Green groundout to manufacture the game's first run. West Tenn starter Justin Souza gave up a two-out single to Freddy Parejo in the second and then walked the next two hitters to load the bases before he hit Shane Justis to force in the second run for the home side.

Souza was lifted after three laborious innings and tagged with the loss after yielding two runs on three hits, three walks and two hit batters. Former Stars' pitcher Patrick Ryan took over in the fourth and gave up a run when Stern singled, moved to second on a Brent Johnson fielding error, stole third and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Ryan was lifted after one inning and replaced by Nick Hill, who gave up a home run to Kevin Melillo and a two-out run-scoring double to Johnny Raburn in the fifth that made it 5-0 Huntsville.

Welch had allowed only two singles in five shutout frames and had retired 10 in a row before walking Oswaldo Navarro and Mel Stocker to open the sixth. He was removed and replaced by Josh Wahpepah, who uncorked a wild pitch that was followed by Greg Halman's two-run single that cut the lead to 5-2 and ended Welch's 13 consecutive scoreless innings stretch. Wahpepah then walked Johnson but worked out of trouble by striking out Marshall Hubbard and getting Matt Mangini to ground into a double play. Welch grabbed the win to even his record at 3-3 by claiming a third straight start.

West Tenn loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and Wahpepah was replaced by the southpaw Casey Baron, who fanned the lefty-swinging Hubbard and retired the lefty-swinging Mangini on a soft liner to second. Omar Aguilar then tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the series and third of the year.

The Stars begin an eight-game series in Sevierville Tuesday night with left-hander Chris Cody and right-hander Donovan Hand set to oppose Smokies' right-hander Marcos Mateo and left-hander James Russell in a doubleheader. Coverage of the games begins at 4:15 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

I'll need to remind my partners in crime here that lefty specialist Casey Baron needs some Power 50 consideration -- he's on a Mitch Stetter-like pace to future big league contributions; as always, Taylor Green in the middle of the action (two walks, productive RBI groundout) even when the hits aren't falling...

Huntsville Game Log

Three fly ball outs in the 9th wrapped around a single for the Omar Aguilar save -- remember that fly ball ratio we mentioned in the P50 this month...

Lawrie DHing has a hit and 3 walks! The OBP police will like that... Miller, Kemp, and Sanchez with 2 hits a piece. Adams stuff can't be all that electric, I wonder what the scouts saw in him to give him a 2nd round rating? Almonte walks 3 with 0K in 2IP.

Nashville absolutely crushed, I gotta believe Littleton's days are numbered. Nothing noteworthy on the hitting side.

I was at the Beloit game today. Adams was pretty good through four. Then in the bottom of the fifth he got roughed up a bit and couldn't finish. But he did leave with a 4-3 lead. I'm not sure how the Snappers website has Meadows with the win, unless it's because Adams didn't make it through five full. Overall I didn't think Adams was bad. But then again, I'm no scout.

As for Lawrie, I was impressed with is plate discipline. I wasn't keeping track, but I'm certain that in every at bat he had the count in his favor 3-1. His first inning hit was a nice RBI single to right center over the second baseman's head. He looks so calm and collected at the plate. Definitly seemed to be head and shoulders above many of the players on the field today.

Final: Wisconsin 7, Beloit (Twins) 4

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Wisconsin wins first road series

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - A 7-4 victory over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on Memorial Day gave the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers their second win in the three game series. It marked the first time this season Wisconsin has won a road series. Corey Kemp drove in a pair of runs for the Rattlers. Daniel Meadows came out of the bullpen to get out of a fifth inning jam and picked up his seventh win of the season.

After collecting just two hits and no runs against the Snappers on Sunday afternoon, the Wisconsin offense started quickly with a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Erik Miller walked to start the game and Juan Sanchez followed with a single. Brett Lawrie, making his first start since having his nose broken on May 21, singled to right to drive in Miller and send Sanchez around to third base. Brock Kjeldgaard was next and his single knocked in Sanchez for a 2-0 lead.

The Rattlers (20-24) doubled their lead in the top of the fifth. Kemp hit a two-out double with the bases loaded to drive in a pair of runs for a 4-0 advantage.

But Rattler starting pitcher Cody Adams couldn't get through the fifth inning. He walked the leadoff batter and gave up a single to James Beresford. On the single to right, the throw went to third and Beresford took second. Nate Hanson followed with a two-run single.

Adams got the first out of the inning with a force out. But, he would give up another single to put runners at first and second. Jon Waltenbury singled to left and the throw home was in time, but catcher Sean McCraw could not hold on to the ball and Beloit (16-27) had cut Wisconsin's lead to one. Plus, the tying and go-ahead runs moved into scoring position on the throw home.

Meadows relieved Adams and worked around Angel Morales with a walk to load the bases. Meadows got the final two outs of the frame on a popout and a strikeout.

Wisconsin got a pair of runs back in the top of the sixth. A wild pitch by Beloit reliever Danny Rondon allowed a run to score. Then, Sanchez knocked in a run with an infield grounder and the Rattlers had a 6-3 lead. An RBI single by McCraw in the seventh put the Rattlers back up by four runs.

Rigorberto Almonte worked a pair of scoreless innings out of the Wisconsin bullpen and closer Jim Henderson came on for the ninth in a non-save situation. The first three Snappers reached on singles with an RBI single by Angel Morales knocking in a run to make the score 7-4. But, Henderson retired the next three hitters to close out the Snappers.

Wisconsin continues their 12-game road trip by starting a series at Dayton on Tuesday evening. Michael Bowman (1-1, 3.03) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Lance Janke (1-1, 2.45) is set to start for the Dragons. Game time is 6:00 PM CDT.

Wisconsin Box Score

Big lefty Daniel Meadows is more than a good luck charm with his 7-0 record -- two of 12 appearances have been starts, and twice this week he's stranded key baserunners to bail out the starting pitcher, check out his overall numbers, including fine numbers against right-handed bats -- get this kid back into the rotation regularly!; Rattlers drew nine walks, nice; Cody Adams with four shutout innings before hitting the wall -- as noted this week, never overly impressive, never completely shelled...

Wisconsin Game Log

Brett Lawrie out at home to end the 1st inning -- attempted advance on ball away from the plate? Sloppy game, and the T-Rats pitchers had zero 1-2-3 innings, but victory nonetheless...

Final: Tacoma (Mariners) 12, Nashville 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Rainiers Rout Sounds In Series Opener

TACOMA, Wash. - The Nashville Sounds had a Memorial Day to forget on Monday afternoon at Cheney Stadium as they came up on the short end of a 12-1 defeat at the hands of the Tacoma Rainiers in the opener of a four-game series.

Nashville (25-20) was held to only four hits on the afternoon by four Tacoma hurlers.

Rainiers starter Chris Seddon (2-3) turned in an outstanding effort to earn the victory, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters over five scoreless innings of work.

Tacoma put the game away early, plating five two-out runs in the bottom of the first inning against Nashville starter Nick Green.

Ex-Sound Brad Nelson, playing his fourth game with the Rainiers after being released by the Brewers organization and signing with the Seattle Mariners, got things started with an RBI single. Mike Morse, Bryan LaHair, and Adam Moore followed with consecutive run-scoring knocks before the fifth and final run of the frame came home when LaHair scored on a Green wild pitch.

Tacoma third baseman Chris Shelton increased the home team's advantage to 6-0 in the second with a two-out RBI double to left that plated Jeff Clement.

Tacoma tacked on three more runs in the sixth to up the lead to 9-0, including Shelton's second RBI double of the contest which came against Sounds reliever Wes Littleton, then added two more scores in the seventh following a Hernan Iribarren throwing error.

Brendan Katin accounted for the Sounds' lone run of the afternoon in the eighth when his two-out RBI single off Steven Shell plated Jason Bourgeois.

LaHair, who paced Tacoma with four hits on the day, brought the score to its final 12-1 in the home half of the eighth with the Rainiers' eighth two-out run-scoring hit of the day, an RBI single off Ryan Houston.

Green (2-3) took the loss for Nashville after allowing a season-high eight runs on nine hits in five-plus innings of action.

The teams continue the series with a 9:00 PM CT matchup on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Tim Dillard (6-2, 3.09) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Tacoma right-hander Andy Baldwin (3-2, 3.83).

The Stars took four out of five to lift their record to 21-19 and take a game and a half lead in the North Division over the Smokies, pending the outcome of their game later tonight.

Tennesse lost, it's a two-game lead.

The Stars and Smokies (Cubs) play eight games over the next five days in Tennessee.

Will Huntsville lose money on the All-Star Game in 2010? Regardless, it's good that Buck Rogers' efforts to maintain Joe Davis Stadium will be rewarded.

Sorry, this is a pretty big pet peeve of mine. There is absolutely no way you can determine stuff by looking at a box score. I talked to a few scouts last summer at the NWL all-star game about both Adams and Odorizzi (since the scouts at that game were the same ones that covered the entire area), and they both were praised for their pure stuff.

That may be true, but nobody who's seen Adams pitch this year has been impressed at all by his stuff. In the draft picks thread, you wrote: "[Adams] has touched 96, and sits in the 92-94 range with his fastball." He seems to working in the high 80s this year from all reports.

Yeah, I have no idea what Adams was throwing last year at Helena or in college, but this year he certainly isn't throwing 92-94 and his control is pretty awful as well. I could expect that from a high school pitcher or a guy with electric stuff, but Adams pitched three years in college and I haven't seen good velocity or good command from Adams this year.

David Weiser's starsboxscore.com

Welch wins 3rd straight

11-game winner from last year now 3-0 this month

I was welcomed with a sudden shower when I walked down the tree-lined walk to the ticket booth, and thought, well isn't this nice -- another rainy day in May...... There had been too many of those. Seven games were rained out in the first nine days of May, and there were six rainouts in the first 15 days. Not to mention the number of games that were completed, but with a rain delay, the threat of rain, or intermittent rain....... But as quickly as the downpour started -- it ended, and it turned out to be the nicest afternoon of the season -- the clouds were pushed away by the warm south winds and the breeze on a warm 76° day was refreshing....... A perfect day for baseball.

The Stars are going to have to make up for all that rain when they begin a road trip to Tennessee. Only two of the five games scheduled at the Joe to start the month were played (actually one was played on April 30), so the Stars are going to play three double-headers against the Smokies in what will be the defining series of this first half....... The Smokies are tied with Carolina in the North, just two games in back of the division-leading Stars, two games over .500. Tennessee is just 9-13 this month, but they have a host of hot bats right now -- Darwin Barney (.338), Steve Clevenger (.395), Blake Lalli (.356), Marquez Smith (.300), and Tony Thomas (.299)....... The Stars, with their thin starting rotation, are going to bring up a couple of pitchers from Brevard, I'm told, to help with the chore of playing three double-headers in four days........ Donovan Hand will be the first pitcher out of the rotation to get a start. Hand, the middle reliever from Lawrence County, will start Tuesday's second game. He's working on a string of 8 2/3 scoreless innings over four straight appearances this month, and has a 2.20 ERA, possibly the most improved player so far this year.

The Stars this afternoon finished off their series against West Tennessee by taking four out of five in this series with a 5-2 victory...... Adam Stern got things going in the 1st inning with his first extra-base hit in almost two weeks -- a double to the right field corner, then scored after a passed ball on Jonathan Lucroy's two-out single to right field to give the Stars a 1-0 lead in the 1st....... With two out again, the Stars rallied in the 2nd, starting with Freddy Parejo's bloop single to right. Parejo, who has struggled this month (a .189 start), went 4-for-7 in the final two games of this series....... Justin Souza then went through a surge of wildness, walking Johnny Raburn, walking Stern, then grazing Shane Justis with a fast ball to score Parejo and reload the bases, but Taylor Green, who left five men on base today, fouled out to end the inning.......

What turned out to be the deciding run was scored in the 4th inning off former Huntsville pitcher Patrick Ryan....... After retiring Raburn for the first out, Ryan (1-2, 5.32 this month) gave up a single to Stern, who then took second when right fielder Brett Johnson couldn't find the handle on the ball. Stern stole third on Ryan's first pitch to #2 hitter Justis, who eventually walked, then scored on a wild 0-1 pitch to Green....... The Stars added to the lead in the 5th on Kevin Melillo's 2nd HR in three days and back-to-back doubles to left field, hit almost identically in the same location near the left field line, by Parejo and Raburn.

David Welch, who had his 3rd straight win and 3rd straight quality start after going 0-3, 10.43 in April, threw five scoreless innings and gave up just two hits, both coming in the 2nd inning before hitting a streak of wildness in the 6th...... Welch walked shortstop Oswaldo Navarro on four pitches, then threw three straight balls to leadoff hitter Mel Stocker before walking him. After throwing 81 pitches, Welch was done....... Josh Wahpepah came in and threw up a wild pitch, gave up a single, and then a walk to score Welch's runners, but settled down and retired the Diamond Jaxx in order on just eight pitches in the 7th...... Omar Aguilar came in to pick up his 3rd save of the month with his 3rd straight scoreless appearance out of the pen.

Chris Cody and, as I already mentioned, Donovan Hand, will open the eight-game series at Smokies Park Tuesday....... Frank Catalanotto, picked up as a free agent by the Brewers a week ago, was promoted to Milwaukee. He was originally penciled in as the DH in Sunday's 6-3 loss, but was replaced by Drew Anderson, so the word must have come to manager Bob Miscik that day...... Catalanotto, a veteran of 12 major league campaigns, played two full seasons for the Jacksonville Suns back in 1995-96, leaves Huntsville after hitting .250 in three games, and contributing to Saturday's 10-7 win with a pair of RBIs in a four-run 5th inning. He hit .298 for the Suns in '96.

Drew Anderson was just 3-for-15 in the series vs. the D'Jaxx. Still, he's hitting .353 this month, and is 8th among batting leaders in the SL...... Shane Justis, the hottest hitter on the club the last couple of weeks (16-for-37) , was 2-for-13 in the last four games of this series. After picking up five doubles in three days vs. Mobile, Justis has not had an extra-base hit....... Kevin Melillo was 4-for-10 with four RBIs in the last three games of the series, including a pair of HRs -- his first two of the season....... Vinny Rottino, who hit .242 in April, is hitting .286 this month with 13 RBIs, almost twice as many as he had in April.

The Stars, now 21-19, are 11-8 in May. This could end up their first winning month since June of last year when they finished that month with a 14-13 record...... Callix Crabbe is struggling in the Mariners organization, hitting .187 for Class AAA-Tacoma (PCL) in 37 games...... Another former Huntsville Star in the Mariners' chain, outfielder Steve Moss, is with the Class A-Clinton Lumber Kings of the Midwest League, hitting .318 after six games. Moss was always a quick starter........ Robert Hinton has moved up to 11th place on the Stars all-time list in relief innings (132 2/3) and 11th in pitching appearances (87).

From Adam McCalvy's article at MLB.com:

Catalanotto remained unemployed until May 12, when the Brewers offered a Minor League contract. He played five games in extended Spring Training before an assignment to Double-A Huntsville, where he went 3-for-12 with a pair of doubles in three games.

Catalanotto had not played Double-A baseball since 1996, when he belted a career-high 17 home runs at Jacksonville.

"I played in Huntsville in that league in '96, and the only thing that's changed in that ballpark is the paint," Catalanotto said.

His stint with Huntsville this time coincided with a Stars homestand. That meant Catalanotto was spared from the Southern League's notoriously long road trips.

"I'm glad I missed that," Catalanotto said with a laugh. "It was a good experience. It definitely makes you appreciate the big leagues even more. Maybe everyone should have to go down every now and then, just to let you know how much more difficult it is down there. They have a good group of guys down there."

I wasn't basing it solely on the box scores, I took into account his results thus far as well as first hand accounts about his velocity and pitches. He's been very mediocre for a 2nd round pick, especially a college pick, he's not great, he's not bad, he's just right in the middle, as are all of the reports we get on his stuff. I'll see him soon enough in person and will get some video... outside of post draft comments there hasn't been a glowing review of him that I remember reading... a feature article or 2, but nothing about his potential on the mound.

Gotcha. It seemed as though you just based that comment off of looking at his line from yesterday.

As far as what scouts saw in him to make him a second round pick, battlekow answered that part of it already:

That may be true, but nobody who's seen Adams pitch this year has been impressed at all by his stuff. In the draft picks thread, you wrote: "[Adams] has touched 96, and sits in the 92-94 range with his fastball." He seems to working in the high 80s this year from all reports.

The stuff was there in college, and again, some people I spoke to last summer raved about his arm strength. We heard Frederickson also wasn't throwing 95-98 (more like upper-80s based on the reports we heard) last summer after he was drafted. I'm not sure what he's up to these days, but hopefully these early round college arms can turns things around.
