Catalanotto headed to Huntsville

Recommended Posts

Nothing really exciting here. A decent bat off the bench and a guy who can play corner OF. Doesn't have much power, while his OBP was nothing special for the last 2 years. He does have 800 OPS upside if he gets regular AB's, but we don't want that to happen as that means we had a key injury. He's also 34 years old so the decline is a coming. Nothing exciting, but usually the 25th man on a roster isn't.

What? The number one ph on this team right now is 38 year old Craig Counsell who's OPS the last 3 years are .657, .631, .674. Catalanotto's OPS the past 3 years: .741, .781, .815. His career OPS is more than 100 points better than Counsell. Now Counsell's done a great job this year so far and yes he's been particularly adept at getting on. But with the tying run on 2nd and 2 outs, give me the guy with the .292 career BA over the guy with the .255 BA.

Catalanotto is a proven professional hitter. He was cut by the Rangers despite hitting over .300 this spring to make room for Andruw Jones who's nearly a shoe in for comeback player of the year. Catalanotto is going to be a key guy off the bench, especially if Hart continues slumping.

No offense to the poster, just need some information for myself. Why does every post that mentions the name Catalanotto suggest that he will be on the 25 man roster, soon, very soon, in days, a couple of weeks, quickly, etc.

The news of his signing a minor league deal did not raise a lot of eyebrows for me personally. Seemed like a AAAA signing. Is he going to be on the bench most of the time. Up just to DH? Didn't seem like a major move, yet I hear enough talk as if he may contribute significantly?
