2009-05-20 Brewers (Gallardo) at Astros (Rodriguez): 7:05 PM CDT [Brewers Lose, 6-4]

Hall needs to take a seat. He should've been pinch hit for by Counsell to lead off the eighth against the righty, and if not he for sure should've been right there. Especially because of how awful he looked in his previous 4 at-bats. I expected that to happen. He looks at a fastball right down main street, then swings at a ball in the dirt. Counsell would've had a guaranteed better ab right there. Hall needs to take a seat, so Gamel can play 3b everyday.

Not only that he was going to K, but that the third pitch was going to be a slider low and away and that he wouldn't even be close. Especially after he lost any focus he might have had after the called strike two on a borderline high pitch.
Exactly.

As soon as the pitch left Sampson's hand, I could see it was starting low and away and I just knew that a) it was going to break, and b) Hall would swing at it.

Well, while the Brewers had their opportunities tonight, they were bound to lose at some point. Especially to a pitcher who's been throwing so well.

Nice to see McGehee doesn't appear to be a total black hole at 2B. If nothing else, he might be a nice, cheap bench player for years to come.

Well, to be fair, it seems everyone is calling it out as a bad move. Rock said something, and TH said something about it on his blog. It is the type of move Yost would have been railed on for, but there was much more bad blood with Yost than there is with Macha.

It would be different if nobody was calling it out as a horrible move.

It's kind of sad that during Bil Hall's at-bat, everyone knew what the pitching sequence was going to be and everyone knew what the outcome was going to be. It was the most predictable at-bat of the season.

I think it's funny that the Brewers are on ESPN.com's front page headlines section because the winning streak ended, but couldn't get on the front page DURING the streak (except for Weeks' injury).

Interesting comment from Macha in the postgame. He mentioned that he had a meeting with Hall before Gamel got called up and told him he'd get an opportunity in Houston to get back to the level he was playing before.

I guess tonight was Bill's shot, but it certainly won't help his cause. It seems the next 4 games are set in stone. What happens after that depends on what happens in Houston & Minny. So far McGehee & Gamel > Hall.

I think Yost would be in over his head losing a player like Rickie. Macha (and Melvin) isn't doing anything rash and he's experimenting to see what will work. Today's may have been a bad choice, but it seems like Macha will use a few games to figure things out and then make a good baseball decision. Yost would have just done something and irrationally defended his decisions.

If you're talking about the decision to start Hall, I don't see how that was a bad choice. Hall is one of the best in the league against lefties.

I was thinking along the lines of letting him hit against a righty after he had already donned the ol' sombrero.
